Nothing says “Big Tent Party” like a good Communist pogrom.
Hasan Piker, a close ally of Abdul El-Sayed, is calling for “Marxist-Leninist” punishment for those who criticize Michigan’s Democratic senatorial candidate. As radicals and anti-Semites like Piker flood the Democratic Party, establishment figures are struggling to justify their alliance with extremist candidates.
Ironically, Democrats are now fulfilling the false narrative that they used against President Donald Trump after the Charlottesville protests. They are maintaining that there are “many fine people” in the DSA despite their seeking to destroy our constitutional system, open our borders, defund the police, and embrace virtual anarchy. Now, some of these fine people are calling for moderates to be purged as radicals take over the Democratic Party.
In 2017, the media manufactured a controversy by suggesting that Trump had praised neo-Nazis and Klansmen in 2017 as “fine people” in Charlottesville. It was demonstrably false, but became the accepted truth in the media. In reality, Trump condemned the neo-Nazis, and the statement about “fine people on both sides” was in reference to the people on both sides of the debate over the removal of historic statues.
That narrative took on an added hypocrisy when some of the loudest voices later endorsed a candidate with an actual Nazi tattoo who allegedly assaulted women, mocked wounded veterans, and praised terrorists. However, he promised to deliver Maine and bring figures like Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren back to power.
Anti-Semites and communists are not “fine” additions to any party. Hasan Piker is not a “fine person” in any universe. He has said that the United States deserved the terrorist attacks on 9-11 and prominently displays a picture of the collapsing Twin Towers. He has downplayed the murders and rapes of innocent Israelis on Oct. 7th and called one Jewish man who challenged him a “bloodthirsty, violent pig dog.”
Figures like Harris and Buttigieg brush off El-Sayed’s allies, including Mohammad Baqer Qazwini, a prominent Muslim cleric who gave a sermon that called for followers to vote for El-Sayed while also calling upon them to pray for the death of President Donald Trump and to celebrate the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Then there is the Democratic House candidate in New York, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a prison abolitionist who boasted how she wiped her hands on the American flag in lieu of a napkin.
Chevalier and other DSA candidates are being welcomed in the Democratic Party despite anti-American views and a DSA platform calling for the destruction of our constitutional system, including scrapping the Supreme Court, the presidency, and the Senate. Many are also overwhelmingly anti-Israel, with many, like Piker, displaying virulent anti-Semitism.
When asked about the extreme agenda of these candidates, Schumer and others repeat the mantra that they need to win in the upcoming elections. In other words, the DSA is opposed to the core institutions and values of this country, but it could be useful in returning them to power.
What is interesting is that the establishment does not appear to care what these radicals represent for their party, but the radicals care deeply about what the establishment represents. This week, former DNC Vice-chair David Hogg told establishment figures that the “Big Tent” of his party is not big enough for them. He and other moderates have to go. When asked about Democratic moderates, Hogg replied, “They don’t have the right values.”
Piker has even grander plans for our post-constitutional republic, calling for mass arrests, demanding pledges from establishment figures to “arrest and prosecute every prominent member of the Trump administration” who engaged in what he views as corruption as well as “every ICE agent who committed crimes on the job.”
Piker also wants to purge any Democrats who do not support El-Sayed, calling them “haters” who deserved to be punished:
“There are haters in our ranks. Notice how whenever someone comes out and says, ‘Yeah that’s actually a bad association,’ immediately it’s weaponized by the Republicans. You can’t be out here saying like, ‘Oh, I’m a centrist Democrat. And I think Abdul is a bridge too far.’ That must be punished.”
Piker, who likes to parade around in a Mao jacket, seems to be longing for the good old days of party purges under Stalin and his contemporaries in the Comintern.
He notably accused critics of the sin of “factionalism.” Since the Jacobins of the French Revolution, factionalism has been the scourge of revolutionaries. In my book, Rage and the Republic, I discuss the difference between the American and French Revolutions. Where James Madison saw factions as a natural part of a democratic system, the Jacobins sought them as a traitorous and reactionary element. Madison saw compromise as the best solution to factions, while the Jacobins saw the guillotine as the final solution.
Piker is right out of that Jacobin tradition, calling moderate Democrats “Koch payroll ‘liberals'” and “irredeemable.” (Notably, the Jacobins also pushed for some of the same DSA demands such as a unicameral legislature).
Of course, conservatives can show the same intolerance for RINOs (Republicans in Name Only), but there is an added menacing element to communists calling for mass expulsion or punishment of moderates from their party. It is chillingly familiar.
Mao regularly purged the Communist Party of those not following the party lines, declaring, “Serious offenders should be punished by law, and when they are Party members they should also be dealt with according to Party discipline.”
Establishment figures continue to use the “Big Tent” narratives to brush off questions about the radical agenda and associations of these candidates. The only thing that they have in common is the desire for power. Once these candidates win, figures like Schumer will discover that this tent is not nearly as big as they think.
Jonathan Turley is a law professor and the New York Times best-selling author of “Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution.”
This column appeared on Fox.com.
If elected to Congress, can DSA candidates that believe in abolishing the Senate, the Presidency, and neutering the Supreme Court by making it subservient to a unicameral legislature be refused to be seated when they lie when taking the oath of office that states, “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God”? If they are permitted to be seated despite their stated position, in advance, to work to undermine and destroy integral parts of the Constitution, what good is an oath of office and why continue this charade? I thought the Constitution stipulated that each house of Congress, on its own, has the responsibility to determine if elected officials can in fact be seated, even when elected. Could a House or Senate with a Republican majority refuse to seat an elected DSA candidate on the basis of their stated intention to violate their oath of office? I thought words had meaning.
Your point is interesting, but given what AOC, Talib, etc., have said against our system and have already broken that oath with no challenges I would not hold my breath on not being seated.
With congressional lobbying the way it is, how could anybody seriously consider the elimination of the President, Senators, and SCOTUS? Are the lobbyists supporting the DSA?
With Republicans every accusation is a confession. Trump is destroying our Constitutional system far more than any DSA.
Also as for extremist in political parties, MAGAs are 100x worse than DSA.
Which branches of the federal government has Trump eliminated?
Touchè
None. Anonymous is just repeating the talking points like a good little soldier.
Anonymous wrote, “Trump is destroying our Constitutional system far more than any DSA.”, “MAGAs are 100x worse than DSA.”
Only a moron internet troll would write such utter nonsense.
Are you an ignorant Chinese AI bot?
@Steve Witherspoon–
I vote for moron internet troll
Found the moron who didn’t read the DSA’s own website and thinks it’s all ‘constitutional’
And how is the Constitutional system being destroyed by Trump. Please be specific.
That is right moderate Democrats. You, “. . . don’t have the right values.” Their tent is not big enough for you. So what do moderate Democrats do? Seems you have three options:
1) Take back your party/tent
2) Leave and build your own, new party/tent.
3) Become an Independent.
Been reading even long time Democrat Jews are getting nervous of where the party is going, with good reason when you have the likes of Piker, Mamdani, etc.
I believe that there exists some Democrats and Democratic Socialists who are not as motivated by power as they are in the sincerity of their beliefs (notwithstanding hindsight and foresight lacking), including Kamala Harris and her wish to purge anchoring foundations and start over.
I cannot help but think of famous lines from “Frankenstein”:
Dr.Waldman (mentoring professor of Victor Frankenstein): ““Herr Frankenstein was interested only in human life. First, to destroy it; then, recreate it. There you have his mad dream.”
Dr. Frankenstein: “I beheld the wretch – the miserable monster whom I had created.”
“I never considered what would come after creation.”
It would be fun to just make some popcorn and sit back and watch what happens, but this is no joke and there are enough ignorant, willfuly ignorant and just plain stubborn AWFUL women (whose entire personality and life is bound up in being the guardians of what is right for the plebians below her) who will rush into this as if it were the crew of the Enterprize boldly going where no man has gone before (but we have gone there and it is a train wreck of death and suffering).
Your casting out the hypocrisy of politicians willing to say anything for a vote truly resonates (Tofu-eating Talarico). But when I read the headline, I thought you were aiming for lies of consequence:
– 2020 election denialism
– Obama birther conspiracies
– Vaccines (and Tylenol) cause autism
All of which are vociferously promulgated by you-know-who. Weird to focus on the former and not the latter, don’t you think?
The danger here is that mainstream Dems are conflict-averse — they don’t have the backbone required to face down evil. Whether its radical Islamism, the CCP, narco-terrorists, inner-city gangs, homeless drug dealers, repeat offenders — and now militant DSA operatives intent on taking over the Party. The permissiveness and tolerance baked into decades of liberal thought signals weakness to the aggressive far left.
Combine that with an unmoderated media environment — a propagandists’ playground — and you have the perfect storm. Conservatives should get behind repeal of Section 230. That way, social media would face the same liabilities as other publishers. Practically, that would force platform operators to know who is the source of content, that they are trustworthy, and not going to trigger a lawsuit. This is how a more responsible media operated in the 1980s-90s.
Take away open channels for propaganda, and the Communist organizer is stripped of the power to manipulate opinion. The time to act is when Congress gets back from summer break.
Why aren’t these very dangerous communists arrested & tried under the laws against communism that are still “on the books”? Those laws need to be enforced as these criminals are calling for the killing of many Americans who love our constitutional republic! These people are traitors & should be tried as such!
They need to be careful not to infringe upon the 1st amendment. I am pretty sure the government is waiting and watching for the action that could bring charges. I also think that the leaders of the DSA are aware of that and are hoping some of their followers act so they cannot be charged.
I’m confused…does the CCP have 1st Amendment rights to shape opinion inside the US? How about tech-savvy Islamists bent on destroying the USA? The geographic location of these infowarriors makes no difference in the impact.
This is why we need to repeal Section 230 pronto. Then, publishers (including tech platforms) will have to know who is providing content and their motives, otherwise a slew of lawsuits will overtake their business plan.
Foreign influence is a big factor in the radicalization of the left. What have we done to stop it?…Nothing.
And it doesn’t help that Prof. Turley champions a wide berth for “free speech” that includes propaganda. His naive idealism (honed in an earlier, simpler media environment) is green-lighting his and our enemies to wage unrestrained infowarfare on the US. The rise of the DSA is borne of both domestic issues and that foreign interference.
You don’t understand the limits of “free speech” if you only think about your speech and that of those of similar opinions. You have to think about your enemy’s level of speech freedom to attack and undermine your security.
There are obviously limits to that latter definition of free speech.
I agree with you on the section 230. People and corporations need to be responsible for what they say or promote if beyond the law. The CCP, another country or organization, through it’s actors (proxies) has free speech rights in the US as any citizen, within the law. They are using our 1st amendment, which they do not have or allow, to their benefit. The problem is not the speech or propaganda, it is the people who cannot think critically, know history or are just ignorant and want things free (mostly rich spoiled brats). If our education system was teaching critical thinking as well as the old 3r’s, we would probably not be in this situation. That being said there always were and will be, the snake oil salesman that people believed and purchased the product they were promoting. As I have said before, now they are not tarred, feathered and chased out of town they are promoted, supported and probably funded by the compliant media. Back to section 230.
Many times I have thought that J.T. should ban certain posters here. That was contradicted by by belief that different opinions, even propaganda has a right to be voiced. It would be nice if the individual readers had a mechanism to block or ignore and individual poster. Thus providing free speech yet the ability to not hear those in the crowd you would normally block out in public forum.
“This is why we need to repeal Section 230 pronto. “
Several years ago, Philip Hamburger wrote an editorial at the WSJ, “We can crack section 230.” I also posted it on the blog at that time.
Anyone who still believes that the vile pronouncements issuing from Pike are mere rhetoric needs to reassess. Should he and his DSA ilk prevail in any coming election cycle to the point that they gain sufficient power to do things such as expand SCOTUS, and/or pervert election regulations to guarantee their perpetual future power, it will be time for every remaining US citizen who values individual Liberty to decide what option to pursue. I’m not going to risk this post being deleted (or invite surveillance by those who fervently want to curtail that Liberty) by outlining those options in detail; I think that they are limited, obvious, and that all of us who still value our freedom should already be aware of them. The time for denial and self-delusion has ended. Posters like John Say will opine that the DSA/Marxist political movement has already peaked in the US, and has entered a long-term decline. That may be so; let us fervently hope that it is true. If that proves to be the case, feel free to accuse me of unwarranted extremism after the fact. But imo we also cannot afford to be blinded to the alternative possibility; we owe it to ourselves and our posterity to think about what must happen if it is not.
The big tent is fine in many instances because it can bring in alternative points of view that may revitalize a movement or a political party. However the Big Tent can also be discriminating by refusing in those that have no real claim on the party or organization and which obviously intend to destroy the party and replace it with what?
Sort of like the point of view from Viet Nam.”We had to destroy the village in order to save it”.
I would say that the Democratic Party probably needs to be destroyed because it has become a desert for ideas and its leadership has become so sclerotic as being incapable of generating new thought or paths. All it can seem to grasp at this time is they want power, for good or ill is not completely apparent. The Socialist wing has always been there as far back as FDR. Will it be ascendent ??
The Republican Party has already been morphing itself. After Ronald Reagan, there was a dearth of real ideas and real leaders and Obama made hash of them. They suffered some significant defeats that washed away a lot of sclerosis in 2006 and 2008 and started to come back in 2010 and Trump rode or led the wave in 2016. It is still transforming itself as if becomes younger and more vigorous but it is not complete. In the Senate especially. Thune will likely have severe problems getting elected to minority or majority leader.
It’s going to be interesting.
The chicanery of the modern left *in total* couldn’t be more clear. Dsa, dnc – either is disaster for free people, and yes, the tent is small, indeed, but it’s the same tent it’s always been.
Above all I’m personally weary of the bending of knees to spoiled children. It’s how we ended up here in the first place, and the drama presented here could easily be a metaphor for that. Everyone involved is emotionally stunted.
Regardless, though I have long thought with others the dem party would fracture after 2016, there is no meaningful difference between these factions; they are in conflict only because both insist on being in charge of pulling the strings. It is more akin to malignant narcissism battling itself than any substantial ideological or ethical difference. Obama/Hillary/Soros/Nancy’s dnc left no room for doubt in this.
Will $4.00 a gallon gas and 3% inflation be enough to bring these communists in sheeps clothing to power? The fact that so many voters will even consider them is an indictment of how deep the useful idiots go in the Democrat party This is truly frightening to me! That candidates who openly espouse the overthrown of the constitutional order to be more than a fringe and to be supported in the quest for power by a major party says volumes about how deep the hatred and fear of Trump has permeated peoples consciousness. Will the fever die when Trump leaves office? Will the damage to the psyche of these voters be so great that the awful alternatives being presented to them continue and gain further power in the years ahead?
We have gotten to the point of such deep weaponization of the judiciary by both sides that it will soon seem normal for an outgoing President to preemptively pardon many members of his outgoing administration and the families of the highest leaders to protect them from what comes after. This will not be enough for Trump and his administration should the Democrats take power in 2 years. If they cannot figure out a way around federal prosecution there will be continuous lawfare at the state level a la Alvin Bragg but with prison being the goal instead of humiliation and monetary damages. We are in very perilous times! The south may indeed be forced to rise again but this time in support of preserving the union.
@CultivatingMan
Very much agreed. My own brother is one of the formerly temperate people consumed by such irrational hatred over figments. It’s unbelievable.
Establishment Democrats only care about winning. They don’t really stand for any principles at all, and never did. They have always been a Patronage Party. So they must support their ranks who profess to believe in Communism or Islamism, but in reality are just angry and want to burn US civilization down to the ground. Those are the D voters with the energy, who will show up in November, and the OCDs need their votes.
The American people are getting wise. Smiling Islamic Radicals are just modern day snake oil sales people.
As I said earlier, Barnum & Bailey also had a Big Tent and it was full of clowns, freak shows, and tricksters. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose (The more things change, the more they remain the same.)
Leon Trotsky, long forgotten.
Yeah but DJT said “America will never become a socialist country” and, you know he’s _always_ right, so sorry commies, go take over a country that’s not so full of patriotism.
Never say never. What happens after the next great crash?

A pogrom is a violent riot or mob attack aimed at the destruction, looting, and murder of a specific ethnic or religious group, historically directed against Jewish communities in the Russian Empire. These attacks typically happen with the passive acceptance or active support of local authorities
Yep…Democrats
and Democrats every single voter hates America. Democrats running states…hate America…and THEIR people!
I’m a Democrat, I don’t hate the USA. My wife is too. My neighbor too. Our mayor too. So where are all those hateful Democrats? I suppose in your empty head.
@Anonymous
Sure. Tell us another as though we don’t see your ‘contributions’ every day. Pfft. It is guaranteed you will provide all of your own evidence before the day is up, and you’ll do it again tomorrow. You sure aren’t fooling anyone, so the money must be good *enough*.
Here’s the “democracy” you love, Mr. Marx, and not one bit of it exists in the Constitution. Democrats are nothing but parasites, so much so that JFK was compelled to admonish you all by commanding, “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.”
The entire communist American welfare state is unconstitutional, including, but not limited to, admissions affirmative action, grade-inflation affirmative action, employment affirmative action, quotas, welfare, food stamps, minimum wage, rent control, social services, forced busing, public housing, utility subsidies, CRT, DEI, WIC, SNAP, TANF, HAMP, HARP, TARP, PBS, NPR, Fed, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Environmental Protection Agency, Agriculture, Education, Labor, Energy, Obamacare, Social Security, Social Security Disability, Social Security Supplemental Income, Medicare, Medicaid, “Fair Housing” laws, “Non-Discrimination” laws, etc.
Article 1, Section 8, provides Congress the power to tax for ONLY debt, defense, and “general Welfare”—ALL or THE WHOLE WELL PROCEED through governmental provision of security and basic infrastructure—omitting and, thereby, excluding any power to tax for individual Welfare, specific Welfare, particular Welfare, favor, or charity. The same Article enumerates and provides Congress the power to regulate ONLY “the Value of money,” “Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes,” and “land and naval Forces.”
Further, the 5th Amendment right to private property was initially qualified by the Framers and is, therefore, absolute, allowing no further qualification and allowing ONLY the owner the power to “claim and exercise” dominion over private property.
Government exists, under the Constitution and Bill of Rights, to provide maximal freedom to individuals, while government is severely limited and restricted to facilitating that maximal freedom of individuals through the provision of security and basic infrastructure.
The Necessary and Proper Clause is nothing more than a perfunctory redundancy for the purposes of clarification—a reinforcement of that which was previously codified—and may not be wielded to amend and impose separate acts that do not represent but alter the letter and spirit of the Founders and Framers.
Karl Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto 59 years after the adoption of the Constitution because none of the principles of the Communist Manifesto were in the Constitution. Had the principles of the Communist Manifesto been in the Constitution, Karl Marx would have had no reason to write the Communist Manifesto. The principles of the Communist Manifesto were not in the Constitution then, and the principles of the Communist Manifesto are not in the Constitution now.
Nobody is less tolerant than today’s leftwing Fascists. They demand pure conformity to the most extreme positions.
Its obvious you are of very low intelligence. Piker will sat anything for attention – like you. And he’s always pushing extreme opinions – like you. See any similarities?
