A certain pattern is emerging on the far left. Political figures spend years currying the favor of other extremists with outrageous commentary, proudly proclaiming their commitment to eliminating the Senate, opening the border, and other measures. Then, they delete all of the comments and declare themselves mainstream. The idea is to run in the center but govern from the far left, the so-called Spanberger strategy. The latest example is William Lawrence, who is running for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. However, Lawrence’s prior self reveals just how radical this movement could prove.
Like many professors, pundits, and politicians on the left, Lawrence has called for sweeping changes in our constitutional system. Lawrence reportedly has demanded a “fundamental overhaul” of the Constitution while calling for the elimination of the Senate, police, prisons, and borders.
He has even denounced the nuclear family as an “isolating, individualistic, violent way of organizing society.”
Notably, he is the latest radical to show that the “Big Tent” party has little room for moderates. While establishment figures like Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries seek to use this mob, radicals have made clear that they will be next. Darializa Avila Chevalier is the latest Democratic Socialist to mock the establishment’s pitch of a Big Tent party: “A big tent doesn’t pay your rent, lower your grocery bill, or take on the corporations bleeding our country dry. Democratic socialism does.”
In Lawrence’s case, he even put this feelings to music, writing a song a few years ago that calls for the death of moderate former Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, declaring, “Our generation says f**k you for everything…Hurry up and die so that we can get started.”
Lawrence was previously arrested for resisting police officers while protesting a pipeline.
As discussed earlier, candidates like James Talarico in Texas have scrubbed their social media accounts or dismissed their earlier radical claims, including attacks on capitalism. Supporters view these candidates as already proving their bona fides and understanding that they are just sanitizing their records for voters who want the illusion of a moderate. Accordingly, many applaud figures such as Socialist Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, dismissing her own extremist statements just a few years ago as “Woke 1” like some distant childhood stage.
These radical figures are learning that their views are distinctly unpopular with American voters so they are perfecting stealth socialist candidates who can run a type of Spanberger campaign while later pursuing a socialist agenda.
Lawrence’s past positions show little nuance and closely track the platform of the Democratic Socialists of America. Destroying the constitutional system, rejecting the nation-state, eliminating prisons, and other radical positions propelled these candidates through the primaries. The effort to now scrub the records shows the utter contempt that many have for average voters.
Lawrence shows the delusion of establishment figures such as Gavin Newsom that they can use a mob to gain power without being eventually devoured by it. What became known as “The Terror” was started not by the working class, but by educated lawyers, journalists, and even aristocrats as part of the Jacobin movement.

Party leaders facilitate them because they can only think about the next election, not the next generation. Lawrence is a cautionary tale that Benjamin Franklin remains correct, this is our Republic but only if we can keep it.

Few voters support “Defunding the Police”, this a great way to lose elections. Most voters do support constitutional-policing as the U.S. Constitution legally mandates and every police-chief swears an Oath of Office to uphold.
The 2014 “Ferguson Report” published by the U.S. Department of Justice was the justification for the “Defund the Police” movement but the Ferguson Report never advocated for defunding of police.
The Ferguson Report was about allowing bigger police departments to “replace” (not defund) tiny police departments with insufficient tax revenue. Police departments without enough tax dollars resort to “Policing For Profit” (excessive ticketing and excessive fines) to make up for the financial shortfall. Police departments driven by money aren’t driven by public safety.
The USA has a “constitutional democratic republic” – voters can ask their members of Congress for any constitutionally-legal actions. Voters can ask for a constitutional-amendment if they believe parts of the U.S. Constitution are fundamentally flawed or outdated.
The problem is (especially following the “Citizens United” ruling) many voters feel like Congress, presidents and the courts no longer put the American people as first priority. This incentivizes extreme candidates on both sides, since the current system is broken and no longer serving us.
Case in point: years ago likely 99.9% of all Americans supported a “Do Not Call List”. Americans pay for our phones and phone service but can no longer answer the phone. Even harder on small business owners.
An issue with likely 99.9% support from voters almost didn’t pass due to corporate lobbyists. Today the issue is even worse, Congress is forcing privacy-invading technology onto citizens, new car buyers, school children, etc.
Apparently in 2027 or 2028, every new automobile will legally require (mandated by Congress) that each car have a camera photographing the drivers face and eyelids. This technology also can’t be disabled, you can’t start your car without this tech.
This “Nanny State Tech” apparently is being driven by European nanny state governments.
Nanny State government is when the politicians perceive themselves as “parents” of adult American voters. Politicians are primarily focused on short term election goals. Adult Americans and adult parents actually have skin-in-the-game for their family’s lifelong welfare.
Most Americans are somewhat libertarian, from Pro-Choice Democrats to Republican gun owners to freedom to marry whoever you please. There are some things that are none of the government’s business.
“Alcohol Prohibition” was the last huge Nanny State blunder by Congress and the Executive Branch. The justification was “to save lives” so government officials essentially thought voters were too dumb to decide for ourselves. We needed grown up government officials to make our life decisions. It was one of America’s biggest disasters and helped create organized crime.
So as a voter, do you want the government giving you permission to drink beer or wine? Smoke cigarettes? Own a gun? Hunting? Playing football or sports? Eating a Big Mac? Rock Climbing? Yes these things can be bad for you. A government official anointing themselves “Nanny State” over adult voters would save lives, but do any voters want this?
There are certain things no American wants the government involved in. Fix that and start representing us! That’s the best way to keep away extremists on both sides!
Yes, but. There are clearly reasonable restrictions on individual freedom that can’t depend on the honor system. Do we want someone free to acquire and assemble a dirty bomb in their garage? A bioweapon? Do we want an entrepreneur’s company to take care of their process-wastes by dumping into the air-soil-water? Do we want to allow foreign enemies to place “operatives” inside the US, and reach through a borderless internet to opinion-shape our teens?
There is a sweet spot that balances individual freedom with public interests. In the case of drunk drivers, it’s requiring an ignition interlock on their vehicle, or suspending their license — not building a surveillance camera into every dashboard.
It’s a total waste of time and energy to argue whether our system is over-regulated or under-regulated…it’s BOTH, and maintaining a sweet spot means willingness to fight against BOTH equally. Taking one side zealously means giving up on the other. That just primes the system for overreach, over-correction, dysfunction and ongoing hardened factionalism.
Unfortunately, a key Constitutional safeguard (a free press) has (with a few exceptions,) morphed into the press arm of the leftism.
In other words: the modern left has to lie and cheat to win elections. So what’s new? Their disdain for us would be shocking were it not simply in their collective DNA at this point. Nothing, and I mean nothing good will come from electing these people. How many times do blue voters have to get burned to stop letting their irrational hatred and privilege guide their decisions, like toddlers? Madness.

Well, ladies and gentleman, I think that is why we have a second amendment. You don’t really think it’s just there so we can hunt and fish. Our founders realized that government could be the greatest threat to our freedoms. Hence, Inalienable rights that supercede government and maintain that our rights come from God or a higher authority and not come from the government. Our revolution was, in fact, a rebellion against our government because it failed to serve the people and tried to assert powers it did not rightly have.
What set off the revolution. As I remember it was because the Redcoats were sent to Concord to seize powder, muskets and cannon. I.e. our means of resistance to illegal government.
The King was only part of the enemy, but Parliament was the main enemy. The same Parliament that had deposed and executed a King in the 17th century and within 150 years was basically doing what that King had tried to do in the previous century. Simply being elected is only the 1st step. The legislature or Congress must also continue to legally act within the framework of the Constitution. The Constitution has a means of amendment. Any other means to try to change it is sedition which can, in turn, rise to treason and should be treated accordingly.

Up till recently, the public education system was grounded in the idea of a Constitutional Republic. I can recall classes about the government, the Constitution, Bill of Rights. We did not go into depth on all of it, but it was there.

In history, I can recall them teaching us what led up to the Magna Carter and then the comparison of that to the Constitution. Of course The Revolution, the war of 1812, then later the Civil War, slavery and state’s rights.

We do it so that we don’t forget how that experience made us feel and respond. Strangers carrying strangers down stairwells. Lines around the block to give blood. Firefighters walking up while everyone else walked down. That doesn’t come from a textbook.
History is both content and formation. The first is knowledge that can be taught in a semester. The second is a learned behavior that lives outside the classroom.

As I have said before the MAGA idea has been around for a very long time.
Trump just packaged it into a niffty campaign slogan. One that got him elected. Twice.
The idea of MAGA will be around long after he is gone too.
But what is MAGA exactly? America and the American people first. Secure borders. Law and order. Stopping fraud, waste and abuse. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Accountability and responsibility. And more.
All those things are an anathema to the far illiberal left. We see it in what they say, what they do.
MAGA is basically how most Americans have felt and hoped for this country the entire 60+ years of my life.

The political fortunes of those Jacobins may have risen and fallen since FDR (FWIW I would predate that to Wilson, possibly to Lincoln), but their heavy influence (if not outright control) never abated. Sad to report, they have played the “long game” much more adroitly than have we who believe in personal Liberty under the guarantees provided by a Constitutional Republic, and the societal and cultural wreckage that has currently risen to our knees is a direct and likely inevitable consequence of that failure. I hope for an ebb in that tide, as I assume do you, but I lack confidence that will occur anytime soon.

Agreed, and whimsical mama pointed out the same. Ultimately this on too many of us being asleep for far too long despite the warning bells going off for years. We are at a coalescence point now, and many of those wondering how it happened were just as culpable through comfort and reticence, IMO. I don’t know what we do other than continue.
I agree. We need to be careful not to go too far or become too much. When that kind of lopsided representation occurs we create the very thing a balanced government was designed to prevent. Trump calls for and succeeds in damaging so many and in the wake of his change so many hard working and well meaning people have been substantially damaged because of his lack of moderation. When you have a swing that great far too many become disenfranchised and many of those are of your own persuasion. The same thing occurs with those proceeding under the democratic party flag; more liberalism, radical liberalism and far too many get left out. Who is the democratic candidate going to be. that’s what I want to know. The democratic party seems to woefully unprepared and in being so present candidates like Harris, far too unbalanced to the left.
We need to dispose the American public to a person of balance not only in domestic affairs but also in foreign affairs. When is going to repair the damage Trump has done in the non-American theatre? Like John Kennedy, civility, discipline and balance are the call of the day. It’s not the drug induced instant result that remains the governing method of so many in today’s public realm. Slower change generates adaptability and to some degree tolerance. Without that flexibility the culture becomes dependent on instant results. That is not the way a productive culture sustains itself. Again , the question remains, who are the democrats going to present? How can we begin to endorse and learn about a candidate and in turn seriously present them as the intelligent choice without time and identity? The republicans have game plans, and back-up plans to those plans. The democrats wait until the last minute and then ope for the best. That’s no way to run a business.

FDR loved putting people in work camps. When the economy crashed all the people desperate for work and food were offered a work camp, far from the cities where a riot of hungry people could protest (with good reason) and upend FDR’s plans. Civilian Conservation Corps Camps (CCCC) today are exalted as “good works”. all those CCCC’s are not to be confused with the CCCP of course. These were a ‘good’ idea back then.
Imagine living through the roaring twenties and suddenly you’ve no choice, you’re out in the woods with the mosquitoes moving rocks around. and thanking FDR for the gruel.
I couldn’t disagree more. The people who needed work were offered the dignity of work. Jobs that in most cases created lasting products. Most of the national parks today still see tourists enjoying the comfort of the stone and log shelters and buildings build by CCC worker hands. Roads and trails they travel on were blazed by CCC workers too. The crews were engaged in meaningful work they could point to years later and say “I built that”. My water worked for the CCC for awhile, and he never expressed any negative feelings about it. There were mosquitoes and rocks where he came from, not to mention heaps of poverty, so why would he complain. Welfare and food stamps, better working conditions, not to mention air conditioning, have softened us. Working in the heat and bugs used to be considered normal. Talk to road construction crews now, it still is!
Yes, they worked VERY hard. Dignity? Ask yourself, who, how many, had a choice? how come no choice? Was that the “American way”?
and why not just continue to pursue the American Dream? Who’s stopping them?
