A new poll shows 43% now have a positive view of socialism. An astonishing 65% of Democrats have a positive view. Socialism is now the rage on the left.
Like clothing styles, if you wait long enough, socialism tends to come back into style with generations with no memory of past failures. However, it is an astonishing trend in one of the most prosperous nations on Earth that outlasted a history cluttered with the broken failures of socialist and communist systems.
A new slick packaging of socialism has emerged with leaders such as Zohran Mamdani offering to teach people of the “warmth of collectivism.” The Democratic Socialists of America are enticing voters with narratives like “Imagine the end of capitalism.” Those words promise voters that there is a brave new world without landlords, debt, mandatory work hours, and “food, education, energy, medicine, and transportation… are common goods and utilities.”
What is incredible is that many are buying this pitch.
It is also ironic that this is happening not just on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence but also on the 250th anniversary of the publication of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations.
As I write in Rage and the Republic:
“While he never visited the United States, his theories seemed quintessentially American to many of his generation. For a revolution that was triggered by tariffs and fueled by events like the Boston Tea Party, Smith’s general principles read like an economic version of Common Sense. It was a type of declaration of independence not just from the British policy of mercantilism (emphasizing British exports over imports) but from economic controls over individual productivity and self-determination….
In summary, Smith was first and foremost viewed as a political theorist, and his economic theories were closely tied to his views on the natural liberties of humanity. Conversely, he saw government controls and subsidies as forms of control and potentially forms of suppression of the human will. The book compares many of these proposals to identical policies of the Jacobin movement in the French Revolution. Both the American and French revolutions arose during the same period, but one became the world’s oldest democracy while the other became the blood-soaked “The Reign of Terror.”
Notably, the Jacobins pushed for the same unicameral system that the socialists are now advocating as well as attacks on the wealthy.
The DSA is the direct descendant of the Jacobins in seeking to tear down moderating institutions and replace the president and justices with democratically elected figures by a Congress composed only of the House of Representatives.
As with the original Jacobins, those demanding these changes are not the working class but professors, pundits and young college-educated voters.
Pushing this analogy to a more menacing level, another poll shows that roughly 60 percent of Democrats now would support a military coup to remove President Donald Trump.
The return of socialism is like the reappearance of low-rise jeans. You are left mystified by anyone who believes that this is a worthy theory to emulate after consistent and catastrophic failures. Long forgotten is the disaster of the socialist government of François Mitterrand in France.
Most recently, Prime Minister Andy Burnham condemned the privatization policies of Margaret Thatcher: “The country surrendered control of the essentials — housing, water, energy, transport — and left people exposed to higher costs.” What he does not mention is that she followed the collapse of socialist policies under Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan in 1977–78 during the so-called “winter of discontent,” which I also discuss in the book.
Perhaps Marx was right after all: “History repeats itself, first as a tragedy, second as a farce.”

Socialism is the easiest thing in the world to understand. Humans are deeply ingrained with a desire to get the most for the least effort. The easiest way to get something is to steal it from somebody else. This isn’t sustainable, of course; people who spend their time, effort and capital producing stuff aren’t going to continue doing so if it is stolen from them. What socialists deny is that this is a continuum. Of course, they say, if you take everything from a producer they will stop producing, they just want to take some of it, leaving the producer with what he needs. The producer may actually continue producing (especially at gunpoint), but their productivity will drop to the point where they are only meeting their own needs. Again, it’s simple human nature – why should someone be expected to produce more that their own needs if the excess will be taken from them without compensation?
There’s a word for a system that provides for the needs of a producer while confiscating the fruits of their efforts: slavery.
When you don’t understand how something works, but see that it always has worked that way in your lifetime, it’s easy to assume it always will work that way. To a socialist, especially a young one, grocery stores have always been filled with food, and will always be filled with food. To a socialist, the problem with grocery stores is not food, the problem is that some people lack the money to buy whatever they want, while other people have the money. With the foresight of a lemming, socialists think the solution is to simply provide the money. When people are provided with money with nothing required of them in return, it is inevitable grocery stores will no longer be filled with food. This applies to all goods and services.
Socialists see capitalism in black and white. They’ll keep the good, like grocery stores full of food, and tinker around the edges. But economics is a continuum. The economy responds to a little socialism with a little less productivity, leaving the “victims of capitalism” worse off. The solution? More socialism! As the system slowly collapses in on itself, power becomes ever more concentrated in the rule-makers, eventually producing a self-preserving dictator or all-powerful ruling committee.
Capitalism at its core acknowledges human nature and focuses it toward the common good, ideally with maximal freedom and minimal oversight. Socialism denies human nature and requires strong and perpetual oversight and diminished freedoms to keep human nature at bay. Is it any wonder that socialism has never worked? Human nature always wins out, which is why socialism will always fail.

With free markets, prices depend on consumer choice. Society’s production of goods and services depends on consumer choice. Goods and services are supplied by commercial entities seeking to make a profit by giving people what they have “voted” for with their spending money.
By contrast, socialism depends on a central planning committee at the top, which decides what people should have, how much those goods should cost, and what people should be paid so they can purchase the things the committee has determined they should have. An economy decided by a central planning committee has less consumer choice and more societal poverty. In a sense it has more equality in that everyone is poor, albeit always subject to the proviso that some people are more equal than others. The difference these two economic models produce was on display during the Cold War, and in particular, in a single city (Berlin), which was a good, controlled experiment since the people in East and West Berlin had the same language, culture, and history; only the economic model was different.
In a socialist economy, the central planning committee and others at the top will generally be able to get what they want, while the rest of society remains poor. But . . . for someone who would prefer that everyone is poor, and thus more “equal,” socialism is appealing because a higher number of “everyone else” will still be equally poor. But . . . for someone who values consumer choice and generally greater societal prosperity overall, free markets are more attractive.
One other point Javier Milei made at the UN about a year ago: free market actors are just as likely as planned-economy actors to have enemies they dislike or even hate, but free market actors are less likely to resort to violence because they need those people to sell to or buy from. Ultimately, financial considerations generally (not always, but generally) override emotional antagonisms.

Given those two, for some seven months each year your life belongs to the state.
That is not freedom. That is involuntary servitude.

Canada’s health care is socialized. The quality has suffered so that it’s common for Canadians to come south for care in the US. The lower quality of care north of the border means they have to start killing people through the medical assistance in dying act. As I noted below, this has led to the killing of an elderly woman against her will. Yet they reject the death penalty for the most heinous murderers.
America should charge for the “nuclear umbrella,” correct the tariff imbalance, etc., but then Canada probably wouldn’t have the funds for its extravagant free healthcare for parasites.
Canada’s healthcare is not a uniform system of coverage. The quality isn’t lower; it’s likely the quantity is higher, but the access to healthcare is wider so more use is made of it. Here, in the USA, there are plenty of people in dire health who die because they cannot afford American healthcare; that economic hurdle is used as a de facto death panel, in addition to those death panels in health insurance companies deciding between padding profits or paying for medical care (hint: profits are more important to investors) In the USA, healthcare is a gated community. It’s great if you can afford it and non-existent if you cannot.

Capitalism thrives on trade imbalance. Paying pennies one place, selling for dollars elsewhere, is the basic engine of capitalism.
Capitalism thrives on the creation of value. Assets such as land and machinery are used to create things people want. The value of those things is greater than the cost of the land, machinery, and the labor that goes into working the machines.
In more basic terms, you buy a head of cattle, and it creates milk for years. The “head of livestock” is where the term capital comes from.

In its misleading stated purpose, Democratic Socialists of America holds that there exists a class structure of American society that is a “basic conflict of interest” between those with “enormous” economic resources and power and the vast majority of the population without. For DSA, this conflict is so egregious that it requires dismantling the society regardless of any unforeseen effects efforts may have on the wellbeing of the majority. But just how intolerable is the conflict in actuality?
To compare as identical early 20th century Russia with still early 21st century America, as in effect does the DSA, is fraught with inconsistencies and ignores realities. 20th Century Socialism failed because it did not live up to its promise of a more general welfare and instead resulted in a class ever more remote from the majority. American capitalism, as imperfect as it is, continues to fulfill that promise. The DSA attack on wealth disavows the importance it has for the welfare of the whole of society. I remain today the proud grandson of immigrant Germans from Russia who in 1906 left with nothing and arrived in America with the same. They witnessed the attack on wealth as the beginning dismantling of their society and envisioned what it could mean for the next several years to come. They and many other Volga Germans like them understood then what needs to be understood today.

Given this survey, it makes one wonder what is being taught about Capitalism. Some of the key elements of Capitalism fit very well in a meritocratic society with high levels of personal liberties and responsibilities: Private ownership of property and capital, Voluntary exchange of goods and services, Market competition, and Market-based pricing (the price mechanism). While some of the elements are quite simple, it is the best system to produce tangible goods and personal services at the lowest cost and highest quality with a benefit to all in the voluntary exchange.
Some knock Capitalism thinking that it causes greed. Greed, alternatively known as ambitious self interest, is inherent in human nature. Capitalism allows ambitiously self interested people to flourish to the benefit of most everyone. We can thank Capitalism for most of the inventions that we take for granted. Any other system will likely squelch innovation.
Some knock Capitalism thinking that it causes inequality. Inequality originates in the unequal distribution of talent, drive, imagination, intelligence, charisma, … in humans. Capitalism allows people with ability to rise to the benefit of most everyone else.
As with any human system, Capitalism has its limitations. But is sure beats the outcomes of numerous large and small socialist Utopian societies.

Claims of widespread voting by noncitizens by President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin took a major hit Thursday after Nevada officials could not identify a single noncitizen on a list DHS sent them.
Mullin said in July that 15,903 people in Nevada were noncitizens registered to vote.
DHS told Nevada officials it reviewed some of the nearly 16,000 names and “confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens,”
So Mullin said 15,903 registered voters are non-citizens. But when DHS actually looked at those people they said the correct number was 185, so Mullin was lying. They sent the list of 185 people to Nevada and demanded action.
Nevada investigated the 185 people and found that they are all citizens.
“As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens. You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise.” Greg D. Ott, a deputy attorney general in Nevada, wrote, according to a copy of a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security officials.
“Our records do not support DHS’s claims, and DHS has still not provided evidence to change that,” Francisco Aguilar, the secretary of state in Nevada, said in a statement. “Instead, DHS officials continue their attempts to intimidate election officials into compliance and deter voters with huge claims of fraud with no evidence. Repeating unsupported claims does not make them true.”

States have records of Births (and deaths) – but only of the people who were born int he state or who died in the state.
No state has any other records of citizenship.
Even a birth certificate alone is not sufficient.
Myriads of people have the same name. Worse still people do not provide their name EXACTLY as it is on their birth certificate.
If you get an exact match of a Name and DOB from a voter registration and a Birth record – you have a very high probability of confirming that the two are for the same person. Though even that does NOT rule out two DIFFERENT people registering to vote with the same name and DOB in two different counties.
And all of the above ONLY works for people who were born in the same state they are voting in.
So how is it that NV verified the citizenship of these people ?
Did it send an investigator to each and everyone of these people and get them to produce a passport ? Social Security card ?
There is a reason that the identity requirements in the FEDERAL I-9 proof of eligability to work are complicated – and the I9 is not a citizenship test – non-citizens can be eligable to work in the US.
There is also a reason that the SAVE act has more complicated proof of citizenship requirements.
Residence in a state does not make you a citizen.
We require people to produce their OWN birth certificate when claiming to be a citizen – because it is virtually certain that many birth certificates across the US have the same name as yours and the same DOB as yours.
Regardless, States do not have the records necessary to prove citizenship.
The Federal Government actually does. With a very tiny number of exceptions every person born in the US for the past 90 years has been issued a social security number – and Social Security has a record. Every person legally entering the US seeking to be legally employed must also get a social security number.
If you are not born here but become a citizen by law – you are issued a social security number.
Separately 53% of US citizens have passports.
While there are very very rare forged passports, and slightly less rare forged social security cards.
There are virtually no false records of the issue of a passport or records of the issue of a social security number.
Put more simply – it is within the power of the federal govenrment to verify citizenship with far greater certainty than it is of the state.
Nevada has the lowest rate of people born in the state – 27%.
The state of neveda has no way to verify the citizenship of 73% of the people living in Nevada.
So How exactly is it that Nevada was able to prove the citizenship of the people DHS claimed were likely not legal voters ?

I am a naturalized citizen. I became a permanent resident in the 1980’s and naturalized in 1998. When I retired I applied for SS benefits using the online portal. The application required me to state whether I am a US citizen or a permanent resident with a foreign citizenship. I checked the US citizen box.
Some weeks later I got a message that I was required to take my original Naturalization Certificate to the local SS office to verify that I am a US citizen. I did so, and asked why it was necessary for me to do that. The SS officer told me that this is a very common problem. When I got my SSN I was a legal alien on a green card. That information was entered into the SS master database. But that database is never updated. I became a citizen in 1998 and that record was kept by the USCIS. They do not disseminate that information to other government departments. It stays locked in the USCIS database. There is no mechanism by which the information is available to SS.
As far as SS was concerned I was a legal alien, but in my benefits application I checked the US Citizen box. That created a mismatch that required me to take my original Naturalization Certificate to the local SS office to prove that I was a citizen.
The exact same thing occurred when my brother and sister later applied for their benefits.
The problem is that when an alien becomes a naturalized citizen, that event stays locked in the USCIS database. It is never transmitted to other agencies. There is actually no mechanism to do that.
The rest of the federal government is completely unaware of the change in status. So when DOGE and others in the Trump Administration started poking around in the SS master database they identified large numbers of people listed in the SS database as legal aliens, who were also registered to vote. But virtually all of them had become naturalized, and as I said this transition is never made available to other federal agencies.
There are millions of people in my position. They are naturalized citizens, but only USCIS is aware of that. Other federal agencies are never informed of the grant of citizenship.

Up until 2024, when you became naturalized, no one told you that only the USCIS is aware of the event. It wasn’t until 2024 that USCIS started telling people that your naturalization was not known to any other federal agency, and advised you what to do to fix that.
And the reason for that change was because as the baby boomers were retiring, the SS offices were being inundated with tens of thousands of people a month having to physically present their Naturalization Certificates. This created huge backlogs and made it almost impossible for SS offices to deal with more important matters.
Before 2024, unless you knew that the information remained locked in USCIS, there was no reason to think that other federal agencies were unaware of your change in status.

You are suggesting that just because a new citizen failed to notify other government agencies, then the fact that SS believed you to be an alien overrides and negates your registration as a voter and your right to vote. Because that is what DOGE was saying. They trawled the SS database for people who were identified as legal aliens in that database, and matched them to registered voters who were new citizens, absolutely entitled to vote.

In 2024 USCIS changed Form-400, the application for naturalization, to include a section authorizing them to notify SS of your change in status through a newly established inter-agency system.

There was virtually no in-person communication with USCIS during naturalization apart from the interview, which is very short and cursory. Everything was done by mail, and it was impossible to speak to anyone in person or by phone. In 1998 there was electronic communication. No emailing or online chatting. At the swearing in ceremony, there are dozens of people. You stand before a judge in his court and take the oath, they give you your certificate and that is it. No one says anything about having to notify other agencies.
