French Police Identify Antifa as the “Ideologically Distinct Group” Behind the Riots Despite Democratic Denials

Years ago, I called Antifa the Keyser Söze of the left, after the character in “The Usual Suspects.” In the film, the character Virgil explains how Söze stayed in the shadows: he became “a myth, a spook story that criminals tell their kids at night.” The strategy was too simple: “the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist.”

Democratic leaders have long fostered the myth around Antifa, the largest and most violent group on the political left. For years, they have denied the existence of the group even as members were charged with crimes (including terrorism). Now, the French authorities have found that the nonexistent group is the largest of three “ideologically distinct groups” responsible for the violence in France. It appears that either the entire French security system is delusional or the trick is up for the American left.

I have testified before Congress about Antifa, run columns on the organization for over a decade, and written a book discussing Antifa. Yet, Democratic members continued to insist that there is no such group, while other leading Democrats have praised Antifa for instilling fear in MAGA.

It was a curious claim even then, when other Democratic leaders were actively pandering to the violent group.

Former Democratic National Committee deputy chair Keith Ellison — now the Minnesota attorney general — proclaimed that Antifa would “strike fear in the heart” of Trump. His own son, Minneapolis City Council member Jeremiah Ellison, declared his allegiance to Antifa in the heat of the protests this summer.

However, Democratic leaders and pundits have repeated the mantra that there is no such group despite political violence on the left spreading across the country.

Rep. Dan Goldman (D., N.Y.) dared anyone to name a single member of Antifa despite the charging of Antifa members with various serious crimes.

Former House Judiciary Chair Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) was widely ridiculed for denying the existence of Antifa.

Others on the left have joined Goldman in this absurd claim. Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel devoted part of his monologue to assuring viewers that Antifa is no more than a mythical “chupacabra.” “You understand there is no Antifa,” he said. “This is an entirely made-up organization.”

The denials continued even as FBI Director Christopher Wray debunked deniers like Goldman. “Antifa is a real thing.” European countries have banned Antifa Internet sites due to their criminal conduct while Antifa candidates have been elected to office as members of the group.

Now, French authorities identified Antifa as the largest of three “ideologically distinct groups” responsible for the violence in France. The French Justice Minister also banned far-left politicians for fueling the rage. A previously banned Antifa group has been linked to one murder in France. Antifa and communist flags have been prominent in the protests.

A Belgian minister also blamed Antifa for the spread of the violence.

It appears that Keyser Söze is in the open, but Democrats maintain the FBI, Justice Department, and various countries are simply delusional.

The problem is when the myth becomes reality. Left-wing pundits and politicians are caught in this denial web where they have to maintain the absurd idea that Antifa is just an idea.

Some of us have been writing about Antifa for years after watching them intimidate and threaten faculty and students on campuses. One such student came from my campus and proclaimed that Antifa was winning after his arrest for property destruction.

When another radical was arrested after taking an axe to a congressional office, he self-identified as a member of Antifa.

Before Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, 26, implanted an IED device outside of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office in downtown Montgomery, he put up stickers reading “support your local Antifa.”

Numerous Antifa members have been arrested, including some who claimed to be journalists.

Many protesters belong to Antifa groups that have names like “Rose City Antifa” and offshoots like Love and Rage and Mexico’s Amor Y Rabia. Antifa members have been elected to the French and European parliaments.

Rutgers Professor Mark Bray’s “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook,” called by some the “Antifa bible,” explains that the group is united in its opposition to free speech. “Most Americans in Antifa have been anarchists or antiauthoritarian communists,” he writes. “From that standpoint, ‘free speech’ as such is merely a bourgeois fantasy unworthy of consideration.”

Yet, Democratic leaders seemed to be adopting the 1967 ‘Guide for the Married Man’ when caught with Antifa allies or associations:

  3. Sure hope that this social-fire does not spread to the French Canadians.
They congregate in Quebec,New England and Louisiana. Hopefully the I.C.E. forces can root them out and deport them quickly. DHS should have them posted as a terrorist group (French Canadians).
They are Napoleon’s Grande Armée on our door step.

It’s no wonder that Alberta CAN wants to secede from the rest of Canada.

  4. Antifa makes us think of “Free speech for me but not for thee”. Here in the U.S.A. It is no accident that Antifa wants to reimpose what we threw off 250 years ago that we are celebrating. Who gets to speak is a question far older than Antifa. It goes as far back as our knowledge of history. And the core problem is not speech itself. It is an attack on who gets to have an idea before published by speech. That says you are not allowed to think, much less speak. At 250 years out, my take of who we are each as individuals takes this form: the Antifa-ite on the street says “ you have no permission to speak. I’m right because I’m holding a pickhandle. The answer back is “Yes, and you just brought a pickhandle to a gunfight”.

  5. There is no better argument in support of an American’s right to bear arms than Democrat legislators, and their fellow leftist sycophants, delusion that Antifa doesn’t exist. Antifa is not anti-fascist, it is anti-First Amendment, as are most, if not all, Antifa deniers. Wake-up, people.

  6. One important distinction to note: Just as the difference between traditional, moderate, liberal Democrats and far leftist, illiberal Democrats, antifa is no more anti-fascist than actual fascist. Antifa calls anyone and everyone they disagree with as fascists. ICE enforcing immigration law as passed by Congress. LEOs doing the same. They call anyone to the right of Mao a fascist. Just because it is in their name does not make them anti-fascist. No more so than the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is a actual democracy or a actual republic. It is just simpletons playing word games to try to make themselves look smart or win an argument. Quite lame really.

By antifa’s own words, (their “Bible”) and actions we can and do see who the actual fascists really are: Them.

    1. “It is just simpletons playing word games to try to make themselves look smart or win an argument.”

      Spoken like a true simpleton.

    2. UpstateFarmer,

I recently thought of you during a speaker symposium by a real brain-iac medical scientist: young nerd (30+ y/o). He and I spoke after his lecture, and his enthusiasm for science was refreshing but his critique of politics in STEM is what brought you to mind. An immigrant from Asia, he tore into left-wing apparatchiks, had nothing good to say about how technology and social media are ruining the brains of young students, and was overall well grounded as to what matters in life: an upcoming wedding, having children, settling down, having honor. His lecture was on cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and drug discovery, a fairly new field. You might want to become familiar with these given your present academic journey. By the way, I’m coming across more and more 50+ year old students on campus within STEM who are pursuing undergrad and grad degrees. You are not alone. Start small. keep building. The sky is the limit.

      1. Estovir,

First, thank you for thinking of me. How kind.

        Thank you for the encouragement!

Seems my classmates were a bit intimidated by me and my age, but it appears I have won them over. One young lady said I was, “Neat!” Yeah. That was a new one.

  7. Antifa is a PLAYBOOK for leftist, militant violence and intimidation. Antifas are delighted to see opponents argue over whether it is “an organization”. As modern terrorist architecture dictates, you avoid all the trappings of formal organization like visible leaders and membership, while adopting the stealth of encrypted apps and blending in with peaceful protesters. They adapt rapidly to law enforcement knowhow, e.g., now that their black attire is well known, they will dress like tourists or students.

Inspector Clouseau seems to have finally made the connection at the end of 3 weeks of street mayhem.

      1. Nazis and antifa have more in common than Trump or MAGA. We are for the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, law and order and are proud Americans.

Antifa cannot say that. We know so by their words and we see it in their actions.

      2. I usually try to respond with facts and logic, but Good God, Mein Kampf a playbook for Trump? That’s just stupid.

  8. I enjoy seeing these cowardly “anonymous” Democrat commenters still trying to deny the mountain of evidence of (1) Antifa’s existence and (2) it’s proliferation worldwide.
Of course, we all know their rage stems from knowing that their antics will only succeed where people are not allowed to be armed, which is why Europe is $crewed, and blue cities/states here keep reaping the rewards of letting these cowards burn down their institutions without being shot by police and/or citizens, which is what they truly deserve.
Many thanks, yet again, to 1A champion, Professor Turley, for this presentation of incontrovertible facts about Democrats’ embrace of Antifa and other seditious parasites.
And our continuing reverence and gratitude goes to our Founders, as always, for their brilliance in elucidating our God-given rights in our Constitution and Bill of Rights – ESPECIALLY 2A.

  9. Over the past two or three decades, I have watched as our country has been eaten away from the inside by the left and the Democrat Party that is now highly paid to represent the left and only the left. I have written letters and emails to my representatives specifically about the left’s misuse of the rule of law to perpetrate crimes against the country and its citizens.  When I do receive responses, they are form letters obviously sent by staff members who only attempt to match the subject matter (i.e., immigration, lawfare, judicial misconduct) with a form they have handy.  If a form response is not handy, there is no response.  My own Congressional representatives, Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, are part of this cabal that has been enabling this lawlessness and are still considered “conservative” by some.  There is no such thing as a conservative who refuses to enforce the rule of law embodied by the US Constitution.

It is past time that we place responsibility for what we are now facing squarely where it belongs – on the President and Congressional representatives we elect and pay to do a job:  enforce the Constitution.  The president swears to “faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and . . . to the best of [his or her] Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”  Nearly all federal officers, including members of Congress swear to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; . . . bear true faith and allegiance to the same; . . . take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and . . . well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which [he or she is] about to enter.”

Obviously, the people we have been given the choice of electing over the past several decades have no understanding what they are agreeing to and do not seem to care.  Many of my fellow citizens do not, either.  At this point, US citizens who still care appear to have two choices:  somehow enforce election laws so we will have a meaningful and peaceful opportunity to make the necessary corrections or get ready to viciously, unsympathetically and cruelly exercise our Second Amendment rights.

      1. OK, let’s start there: According to you, US citizens are not permitted by the US Consitution to elect officials (historically affilated with political parties) to represent them in enforcing their rights under the US Constitution. Now what?

          1. If you are going to try to inject yourself into a conversation, at least try to educate yourself about the subject of the conversation. If you’re unable to do that, prepare to be ignored.

  10. Antifa is a multi-level marketing organization, not unlike Tupperware, and these alleged “riots” are their Tupperware parties.

  11. >100 comments and it’s only 10:15 AM Eastern Time. The forum’s resident TDS troll, likely paid by Media Matters, is spamming the comments section with a phrenetic, exasperated pace, displaying his true sentiments: raw fear. Why bother to post ad nauseam ad infinitum unless if he is paid to do so?

Now comes Media Matters President, Angelo Carusone, successor to David Brock, whining just like the resident TDS troll. It appears Elon Musk is financially bankrupting Angelo Carusone and MM through lawsuits. Like Democrat Member of Congress, Ilhan Nur Said Elm (aka Ilhan Omar), Angelo is begging the public to send him/her/they money.

Winning! The Left is going down in flames.

Weird thing with emails like from Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC is that this man is quite literally suing me personally and my org into oblivion — and seemingly committed to ruining my life. While I get that personalizing subject line it is a nice gimmick for fundraising, kinda sucks for me.

  12. Antifa? Yeah sure right up there with reflecting pool vandals. Regardless rather be ANTI than PROFA. Turley’s M AGA mouthpiece creds have never been in sharper focus.

    1. It really is amazing to see watch him go full FASH in front of our eyes. Then again – he won’t get all those sweet, sweet offers from the New York Post if writes objectively and fairly.

    2. You could not be more wrong.

Antifa, progressive illiberals, wokeism, is the antithesis to what the traditional, moderate liberal Democrats are. They are also the antithesis to the Constitution and rule of law. The good professor is just pointing the distinction between the two out. Unfortunately there are those who are not bright enough to figure that out. The professor and Bill Maher have been saying that for years now.

  13. The far left in France is trying to roll back budget cuts, so they organized students to be their human sandbags. It’s the Thunberg strategy. Kids won’t take the arrows that adult communists might, but the threat is clearly implied: today it’s kids with rocks; tomorrow it’s war if the French government doesn’t back down.

It would be a cynical win-win for the far left. If the government doesn’t capitulate, it’s chaos, and stupid voters will blame the mainstream parties. If the government does capitulate, the state will soon bankrupt, and again, stupid voters will blame the mainstream parties. The far left think they’ll win either way.

It may be extinction time for the dinosaurs of the French center-left establishment. They let a whole bunch of troublesome losers into France who even North Africa didn’t want. The French establishment thought this would extinct the right, and they may have extincted themselves. Buh-bye!

Lefties everywhere are watching. If the French far left prevails, the Democrats may go full tyranny because they’ll see what happens to establishment figures that don’t lead the mob.

If the French military and rightwing declare martial law and crackdown successfully, Democrats here will whine, but it might defuse the far left in the West. It’s a hard choice for the French, but it may be too late for other “moderate” alternatives. The so-called moderates deliberately blundered into this chaos. Interesting times.

  14. Come On Man- Antifa is just a loose association of malcontents that occasionally dress in goth and meet up to chew the fat, whine, burn, loot, assault unlucky simps that wander by, and conduct hit and run terrorist strikes on various targets like the KEYSTONE Police and Gendarmerie. Until the real pain is too much to stomach the stupid DJT strategy of hit and apologize will just encourage more riots. Want to wear a mask at the fiery but peaceful Antifa convention? Expect to receive a baton and Uber ride in the Paddy Wagon.

  15. S@@tlibs, I am going to try to engage in wokespeak. I am deplorable so I might need help from my moral betters.

    “Antifa is only an idea”.

“Antifa is fighting fascists so their activities are necessary to safeguard “Our Democracy(tm)”.

“Your speech is violence and our reaction is a necessary self-defense”.

I have often recommended that the “brave, masked, wonderful warriors of Antifa” take their message of love and redemption to places like Coeur d’Alene, Idaho or Central Appalachia and wonder why they have failed to do so.

  16. Just one problem: Turley nowhere gives a reference for his claim that the French authorities have attributed the violence to Antifa. Various MAGA type social media commentators make the claim, but they count for nothing. If Turley is going to post such ridiculous “I told you so” bollocks, at least back it up with a direct statement from, say, the French Interior Minister or senior police officer. In the meantime, he is just throwing fake red meat to all you fools who believe he is a respectable, honest commentator. Here on the other side of the Atlantic, Antifa is really a US concept. Yes, plenty of French left wingers describe themselves as anti-fascist, have done so since the Sixties, but that does not mean that Antifa per se is a real and active thing over here. Turley witters on about Keyzer bloody Soze, but he really needs to stop trying to contort news to fit stupid Hollywood tropes. Fake news, fake rage from Turley.

    1. Antifa a US concept?LaHorde.info catalogs a flotilla of local Antifa groups, all over France

      1. As linked to by Professor Turley, in February a group of hooded, gloved men, members of the banned Antifa group Jeune Garde, beat a young right-wing man to death.

        1. Jeune Garde are Jeune Garde, not Antifa. The French left have been fighting with the CRS for sixty years. Nothing to do with your Antifa.

          1. And still, nothing attributable to a French minister or French policeman. Turley’s entire article is a stone-cold lie.

    2. So, all those videos of black bloc young people, rioting, looting, committing acts of arson, attacking police and firefighters in France and other EU countries, those are all fake news?

    3. “French authorities have attributed the violence to Antifa.”

I pasted your quote into Google. Guess the results.

Pages and pages of French authorities attributing the violence to Antifa (among other terrorist groups).

You might also want to look at all the “Paris Antifa” flags and banners carried by the rioters.
