Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: Hero Pilot Discharged for Being Gay

150px-AirMedalObverse.svgThe “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy has claimed another American hero. Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, an F-15E Strike Eagle with nine Air Medals, including one for valor for assaulting an Iraqi ambush position while under heavy anti-aircraft fire has been discharged for liking men instead of women.

As with a number of other principles, changing this insidious policy has been put on the back burner by the Obama Administration. Fehrenbach, who was born on an Air Force base and calls the Air Force his life, has been told that he is a danger to his unit and its morale. Of course, the soldiers who he protected from an ambush by attacking that enemy position were not particularly interested in the time who he dated. The military now appears to believe that it would have been better not to have him in the airplane at all so heterosexual soldiers could die without the corrupting influence of a homosexual.

His career and those of other gay soldiers, sailors, and air personnel is simply not a priority at this time.

  1. What are they afraid of, that they are going to play army, and all get blown away. Thats the casualty.

  2. I saw this last night on Rachel Maddow. There was a time when the excuse that integration would lead to disruption in the unit held up and allowing women to serve alongside men would also be disruptive. They were right, it was disruptive to the unit. And everyone survived. The unit adjusted. The system allowed for men and women to serve and advance regardless of race or gender. There was a time when Colin Powell could not have served alongside white men and he rose to become chairman of the joint chiefs.

This is the perfect opportunity for the White House to stand up and admit that don’t ask- don’t tell” does not work and to admit that gays and lesbians can serve and make a significant contribution and that their gender preferences have nothing to do with their suitability for what job they choose to perform in life.

Once again, I don’t think that President Obama will act to right this horrible wrong. He is turning out to be pretty cowardly. He is afraid to stand up to the conservative democrats, to do the right thing when it comes to prosecution of war crimes, to close Gitmo and now this.
His inexperience is showing and he is turning out not to be much of a leader but rather a pretty decent manager.
No one elected him to be CEO, we needed a President, one with real leadership skills and one who could do more than make pretty campaign promises.

What do they call a leader who can’t get anyone to follow? Just a guy taking a walk.

  3. The ironic thing is that there are a lot of Republicans and conservative Democrats out there against changing the policy and yet none of them has ever served in the military, none has ever put their life on the line to protect this country…

Chicken hawks like Cheney should not be disparaging the bravery of any member of the military, gay or straight

  4. NF:

“Chicken hawks like Cheney should not be disparaging the bravery of any member of the military, gay or straight.”

    ***********************

Bravery knows no gender nor sexual orientation.

  5. This is so screwed up for all the reasons mentioned above. The army puts people back into a battlefield who are suffering from PTSD. I know a man who while back home, kept waking up at night trying to strangle his wife, that is when he wasn’t running down the middle of the road. He was sent back for another tour. We have more private contractors than soldiers working on our wars. These people are dangerous to our troops and civilians. We do both these things which are incredibly destructive because we don’t really have enough people to conduct our imperial plans. So why is it that we’re getting rid of people who are gay and lesbian, again?

  6. The “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was intended as a temporary compromise to ignorance and idiocy. Since its adoption a new generation has come of age and joined the military. The remaining idiots among them just need to deal with it. That the policy survived the Bush administration is also an example of how Dick Cheney has managed to combine physical cowardice and moral cowardice in a single package. As the parent of a gay child, he certainly understands the humiliation and degradation this policy represents to the gay community. Yet the chief warrior in the war on terror never had the gumption to even stand up for the rights of his own child. Of course, I suppose there was no more chance that any of Mr. Cheney’s children would choose to serve than that any of Mr. Bush’s offspring would do so.

  7. I have already called the White house in protest to let the president know that even though I’m not gay, this is stupid and intolerable. I suggest everyone else who is outraged does the same. They are polite and take your full statement. While I’ve always been for gay rights, the Prop 8 thing in California made me realize this should be a deal or no deal issue in terms of our leaders.

  8. Why didn’t he honor the don’t ask don’t tell policy. He THOUGHT Obama was going to reverse the policy and guess what……..Obama ain’t gonna! He got elected – he doesn’t need the gays anymore.

  9. Mike Spindell, I am calling the white house tomorrow and congratulating them on keeping the policy.

We don’t need to upset and demoralize half the military to appease 3% of them do we? Of course not.

So you want to keep the 12,500 gays & lesbians (over 10 years) that broke the don’t ask don’t tell policy and lose perhaps hundreds of thousands that either 1) won’t re-up or 2) enlist in the first place.

Come on; stop trying to ruin the US Military to appease a small but vocal voting block. Oh ya, that’s right. Democrats NEED every little voting block they have accumulated, whether its the gays, lesbians, unions, teachers, welfare recipients, the unemployed, blacks, etc. or you see THEY WOULD NEVER WIN ANY ELECTIONS!

  10. Wow,

96 to 4 on sticking it to Obama on closing Gitmo.

Car manufacturers bankrupt after billions stuck into them to protect union jobs.

Iran launching a long range missile after Obama pleads to talk to them.

Hamas says Obama is a liar and not to be trusted.

Israelis now overwhelmingly believe Obama is NOT GOOD for the safety and security of Israel.

Hezbollah announces they will resume border attacks until Obama cuts Israel off.

Russia warns Obama not to send America down the path they mistakenly took.

China says “no more buying our debt”.

Generic ballot surveys of both Rasmussen & Gallup now show Republicans have moved 11 points or more up and are now tied with Democrats – beating them on almost every issue.

Heck, this is just 3 minutes of thought. I could go on for a couple of pages but you all get the drift – Obama is in DEEP DEEP trouble and sending America into even deeper trouble. This keeps up and the GOP will get back the House & Senate in 2010.

  11. Ann,
The greatest of the ancient warriors, the Spartans, all had male lovers. Throughout history there have been gay warriors, perhaps Alexander the Great might stir your memory. You dishonor our troops with your homophobia and you dishonor America. As a homophobe, you are probably a fundamentalist Christian to boot. Jesus never talked about homosexuality. In the Torah it was described as an abomination, on the same level as eating pork. Jesus was against divorce, but the Bible Belt States lead the nation in divorce. Perhaps if you really tried to understand Jesus message than you’d realize Republicans are against most of what he preached, but to do that you might actually have to think, or really work on your spirituality, it’s so much easier hating and shredding the Golden Rule, which you do so well. Have a blessed day.

  12. GWLawSchoolMom writes that Obama “is turning out to be pretty cowardly. He is afraid to stand up to the conservative democrats.” I too am extremely disappointed in Obama, but I am not so sure about his motivation; in fact, I’m stumped as to what it is. He might be cowardly, but I can think of other possibilities. One is that he is a conservative Democrat, and he misled us during the campaign (although he gave us a hint when he voted to give the telecoms immunity). Another possibility is that his primary goal is to bring the nation together, or, to put it in a less favorable way, to get everyone to like him. This in turn could have more than one motivation: to make the nation a less combative place, or to win by a landslide in 2012. After all, he has the left sewn up: what are we going to do if we feel that he has betrayed us — vote Republican?

I am afraid that Obama, like Clinton, will name a moderate to the Supreme Court, which could move the Court to the right, given that the moderate would replace Souter. Reagan and the two Bushes put right-wing extremists on the Court, but Democrats just don’t play as tough.

  13. Jesus: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Ann: Kill them all. I hate them all.

God bless you Ann, you’ll need it while being consumed in the everlasting fire.

  14. Ann:

I hope actually, that republicans of the Sarah Palin/John McCain type do not win. They will be worse for the country than Obama. Most republicans are like Lindsey Graham, soft and squishy and just as progressive as Obama.

They have no philosophical base from which to govern. Bush started all this bail-out crapola and should be a harbinger for republicans about how we should not govern.

You can spout all the anti-Obama rhetoric you want but republicans of the current vein will be no better. You will be trading winesaps for macintosh.

  15. Ann, maybe you should get your facts straight. The “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy has nothing to do with telling. If people think you are gay, they can authorize an investigation. Most gays in the military go to great lengths to hide their sexual orientation, I know because I have friends who are gay who also served. The argument against gays serving openly in the military is just straight up bigotry. Ignorant people are afraid that our God fearing Christian soldiers will catch “the gay” if they live in close contact with these immoral sinners. Gays have served in militaries since the dawn of mankind, playing significant parts in every major American war. Anyone who has served in the military who isn’t infected with religious/social intolerance will give you the honest-to-God objective opinion: gays can be equal to or even better than their straight counterparts. I can’t tell you how many dumbass straight Marines I knew who did the following things: multiple DUIs, having kids every year and a half and bitching about family issues, STDs (its not just those deviant gays that can get them), females getting pregnant, males getting their unmarried girlfriends/one night stands pregnant, etc. I could go on and on about the incredible disruptions straight people caused within the military that I experienced in just my small time in the military. The funny thing is, the only gay airmen/Marines I know were some of the best servicemen I have ever met. In nearly every case, I’d rather have them over the whole lot of straight servicemen. This is, of course, all anecdotal, but the threat of open homosexuals to unit order and discipline is just one big fat myth put forth by bigots.

  16. Oh, and one of my good friends was kicked out of the military for being raped (attempted rape) by a “straight” married airman. No one had ever questioned his sexuality since he kept it to himself, but working in close quarters the perpetrator began to suspect my friend was gay. Once he convinced himself my friend was gay, he tried to sexually assault him. When my friend reported the attack to his command, he was kicked out for being gay. Three cheers for America.

  17. As the resident regular nearest to being a homophobe, I must admit that I think Lt. Col. Fehrenbach’s expulsion is a mistake.

Perhaps gays could be allowed to serve openly but with stringent rules against fraternization and immediate expulsion if it occurred, but only upon the establishment of irrefutable evidence during a fair military trial.

Again, and I have not tried to research the full psychological reasons why, but 2 women being together is not even close to being as objectionable as 2 homosexual men, which to me will always be repugnant. However, as a biologist, I have seen many examples of homosexuality throughout the animal kingdom and that does not even begin to include the millions of perfect flowers and those that are polygamodioecious. Some plants seem to have all of the reproductive bases covered and they are very prolific and successful.

Ergo, human homosexuality is something a civilized society must deal with by applying rules of societal order to ensure a modicum of decorum and fairness. In the military, that would mean that Bill and Phil could not openly fraternize and more than could Jack and Jill.

I prefer not to know too many details about some humanistic aspects; homosexuality is one of those. However, how can we as a society mistreat a class of citizens who pay their taxes, do not violate laws, and especially, those who are willing to give the ultimate sacrifice to protect the rest of us from harm?

  18. Ann:

“Democrats NEED every little voting block they have accumulated, whether its the gays, lesbians, unions, teachers, welfare recipients, the unemployed, blacks, etc. or you see THEY WOULD NEVER WIN ANY ELECTIONS!”

How do you think political parties win elections? They gather coalitions of like minded or similar minded people to vote for them. You can also say that republicans will never win an election unless they get evangelists, gun owners, business owners, pro-lifers and secure border types to vote for them.

  19. Ann’s comments reflect that she doesn’t have a clue about life in the military. She’s certainly homophobic, however. The comments regarding the Republican comeback are wishful thinking, unless one believes that South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Texas or Mississippi are going to provide the country’s future leadership. Judging from what they’ve got now, that’s hardly in the cards. Dream on, Ann.

  20. MatthewN:

interesting thoughts, which I had never thought about before. If one is honest they would have to say a squared away marine is an asset in a fire fight. Makes not one whit of difference a persons sexual orientation when the lead is flying who has got your six, the guy that thinks clearly is the one you want.

  21. FFLEO,

The infrastructure you speak of is already in place. It is against regulations for sexual relations between Marines in the same unit (or share a working relationship). Pvts. Jim and Mary will (or should be) be disciplined if a sexual relationship between them is found out if they have any working relationship at all. Having seen stuff like this happen firsthand, many officers simply look the other way. Once again, the rules/laws are selectively enforced. If Pvts. Bob and John want to do whatever they do in their off time (in garrison, obviously), that should be their own prerogative provided they do not break existing fraternization policy. The idea that homosexuals are uncontrollably hypersexual rabbits is an outright lie– it is a characteristic that many human beings share regardless of sexual orientation. The problem with changing the policy is that officers will have to actually enforce the regulations they’re supposed to. Having worked in close quarters with a great many junior officers and officer candidates, I am not very confident that many of these individuals would be willing to (or courageous enough) enforce the rules equally.

  22. Mike Appleton,

You and I served in the miltary during the Viet Nam period. Did you know any openly gay servicemen? I did not.

Ann: you are just one of the many reasons I am for a military draft for both men and women.

  23. Mike Spindell: Re: Spartans.

An insignificant number of the Boeotians, Spartans, and Cretans, were susceptible to pederasty.

Pederasty was seen as an effective means of population control, education, and crime reduction.

A typical pederastic relationship was between a young male aged 13 to 18 and an adult.

The Greeks strongly condemned the use of children as soldiers and constricted military pederasty to young males of at least age 16.

So Spindell, are you saying we should have a flock of young boys available for, ahem, gay soldiers?

  24. Mike Spindell, it just never fails to amaze me how so many FAMOUS DEAD people were GAY! I mean who would have known, or did know, or even, who is there alive today to DEFEND these people against your attacks that they were gay?????

Good Lord, how many years after Obama dies of old age will we learn HE WAS GAY YOU KNOW, LOL. Lets see now, I think it takes about 80 years before there is anybody left alive to refute “he was gay you know” allegations that are so easily thrown out by that community…

Maybe Obama was a great candidate. Doesn’t mean he will be a great leader. The thing we commoners get to see is the race. What we don’t get to see is how laws are really made, the awful compromises for votes and the moral twisting and turning that politicians do. This is what keeps good people from running for office and what gives us the photo and telegenic candidate who can deliver a slogan with sincerity. Don’t all candidates mislead to one degree or another? Don’t they all want to be liked? Loved, even?
If his goal was to make America a less combative place he isn’t doing so well with that goal either.

Clearly the Republicans will and ought to use all of his missteps and failures in trying to regain some power in Congress. Maybe the biggest joke of the 2008 campaign is that Obama is a socialist. Clearly, he is not — and maybe I’d feel a bit better about him if he were.

  26. Former Fed,
I agree with you that this officer should not be expelled from the military because of his sexual orientation. However, he should have no different restrictions than a heterosexual officer in the military. The rights of a gay person should be the same as anyone else. Otherwise, you have a separate, but equal kind of situation. Anyone who is willing to put their lives at risk for the safety of our country should not be treated like a second class citizen.

Maybe gays and lesbians make up 3% of the military, the truth is that because of “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” we don’t really know… if their demographic is the same in the armed forces as it is in the rest of the world it is closer to 12%.
    Think about this:n
Jews make up just under 2% of our population and yet they were discriminated against with more fervor than the gays who serve. African Americans make up about 9% of the population and yet they serve and die disproportionately than white do in the military.

What Mike S and I and others are talking about is discrimination.
No one wants to ruin the military and clearly gay servicemen like Lt Col Fehrehbach did not do a single thing, ever, to ruin the US Military.
If gays and lesbians can cut your hair, design your clothes, create the art on your walls, assuming that you don’t place a bowl over your head and follow the line with your pinking shears, make your clothes out of whatever and don’t have any art aside from the christian tear outs from jesus freak magazines, your life is affected by gays and lesbians everyday.
Gays and lesbians teach in schools, represent clients in court, treat illnesses in hospitals, repair cars. Why, they do just about everything and anything you might imagine yourself or one of your own children doing. Why, you may even have a gay child and not know it.
and the real truth here is that there is not a single gay or lesbian person who has affected any part of your life in any kind of negative way that springs from their identification as gay or lesbian.
why, your next door neighbors might even be gay.

Don’t Ask — Don’t Tell should not be a policy that either encourages or discourages gays and lesbians from seeking their fortunes as career military. It shouldn’t come up at all any more than it should factor into whether a Jew or African American or Latino or Asian is suitable for the military.

  28. gw lawschool mom & mike spindell:

Research pederasty because liberals seem to think the typical Spartan soldier was 1) gay and 2) a world class fighter..

Nothing is further from the truth.

Also, the ‘gays & lesbians are 12% of the population is a figure that was invented BYYYYYYYYYY……..gays & lesbians.

Most experts that don’t have a dog in the hunt estimate the gay & lesbian population at around 3%.

  29. LOL! Isikoff was just on MSNBC (its a little watched channel on TV, check your paper) and said Obama basically told a bunch of lefties where to put it at the White House today. Additionally, when the lefties addressed Eric Holder who was present at the meeting, Obama cut into the conversation and pointedly said Holder doesn’t have anymore time to waste on their concerns.

Like I said, the MAN got elected, he don’t need you LEFTIES anymore does he!

  30. With a stroke of the pen, Barack Obama has imposed higher fuel-economy standards on the American auto industry. Those standards can only be met by making the average car smaller and lighter than consumers prefer.

The inevitable result is that thousands of innocent Americans, possibly tens of thousands, will die painful and sometimes fiery deaths, while many thousands more will be seriously injured.

This prospect apparently gave Obama no pause whatsoever. He has never so much as hinted that he sees a moral dimension in the trade-off between human life and reduced carbon emissions.

On the other hand, Obama sees the brief and physically harmless discomfort of three terrorists as posing a moral crisis of almost unparalleled dimension, necessitating endless apology and hand-wringing.

The contrast in Obama’s priorities is striking, to say the least.

I would submit that this is what happens when you substitute preening for intelligent policy-making.

  31. Ann,
I realize that trolls do not care about facts, but your claims about Obama and the auto industry are made up, and outright fallacious. Why don’t you provide us some documentation of the claims that you make?

  32. Evening Mespo72Cubed, Buddha, Mike S., Jill, Patty, JT, GW-Mom, Mike A, rafflaw, and all the others.

How is everyone this wonderful evening? Nice and cool in Texas tonight.

  33. Ann:

I think everyone would appreciate it if you would actually make a coherent argument as well. All view points are welcome, but you are basically throwing up a giant straw man (ancient Greek man/boy relations) and beating the hell out of it. Gays serving in the military has absolutely nothing to do with this. You took someone’s evidence of gays present in militaries throughout history (which was supporting a greater argument) and turned that into the basis of your argument. Rather than creating a discussions revolving around the topic the rest of us are focused on, you’re attacking something completely unrelated.

  34. Matthew N,

Thats what Trolls do. Compliment the hell out of em. That will confuse them more than encouraging them to talk, don’t you know.

  35. I will make one attempt to offer up the olive branch, but after that I just simply ignore them. :)

  36. AY:

Howdy to you too. I didn’t think “nice,” “cool,” and “Texas” could ever get into the same sentence. I now stand corrected.

  37. Mespo,

From the vantage point I am at 19 miles south of Dallas it stays nice until it can’t no more. It does have it advantages being on a hill. You can see forever, but the wind does get warm at times. The first 10 days back at work have been fairly good. Money is not the same as solo for me at least, but there is some trade off I am not responsible for payroll for 4 secretaries and 2 attorneys. That can get cumbersome especially when the office overhead was more than 6 a month, then salaries too boot. This is gravy (sort of) 7 to 5 NO COURT, did I say NO COURT and half a day on Saturday if needed. It is nice that someone else is on the hook and it ain’t me this time.

Hey did you catch the City of Det case with the Attorney Discipline issue for all Attorney’s involved. It is incredible. I guess they are hinting that the Plaintiff’s Attorney committed extortion.

  38. AY:

That overhead is lots of fun at my shop too. I enjoy the independence but it comes with a sizable cost. Glad you like your situation though. I missed that Detroit case.

  39. AY,
It is good to hear from you. The weather in Northern Illinois is warm and windy. Good luck with your new work situation. I have run my own shop a couple of times and the regular paycheck with the bank is easy to get used to.

  40. “An insignificant number of the Boeotians, Spartans, and Cretans, were susceptible to pederasty.”

    Ann,
Unfortunately I know the definition of pederasty, which is sex between adult men and pubescent boys, so your statement bears no relationship between the point I’m making. I’m talking about homosexuality, which is sex between two adults of the same sex. What I stated about the Spartans was true and you do nothing to refute it.

Since you also make a point about calling people homosexual after they are dead. Let’s deal with some live Republicans, who are just fine with you. Lindsay Graham and Denny Haestart
come to mind. The amount of closeted Republicans is actually quite large.

“With a stroke of the pen, Barack Obama has imposed higher fuel-economy standards on the American auto industry. Those standards can only be met by making the average car smaller and lighter than consumers prefer.

The inevitable result is that thousands of innocent Americans, possibly tens of thousands, will die painful and sometimes fiery deaths, while many thousands more will be seriously injured”

These two attempted paragraphs alone prove that you are an idiot and certainly as a troll not to be taken seriously. You are merely an individual, consumed with hatred and prejudice, who is willing to lie in order to protect your
precious leaders. You would no doubt make an excellent fascist, if you are not that already. This is so because the typical fascist is a person who follows supposed “strong” leaders and is willing to do anything to protect them. Fascists also hate those that are different from them, usually because they are personally such bitter, self-hating people, that they need to take it out on others rather than accept it in themselves.

What is so hilarious about you is that you are so filled with hate, that you lack the understanding of how silly you are and how silly the arguments that you make are also.

  41. FFLEO, I did not know any gay soldiers personally, but I knew of them. All of the assholes I encountered, however, were heterosexual without exception. It has never been an issue with me or anyone else in my family. I have a sister who is gay, as well as a former college roommate with whom I have remained good friends to this day. My sister did not simply reach adolescence and then decide whether she would choose the gay or straight road. It is a matter of biology. Furthermore, I have never felt threatened by another human being’s sexuality and have never understood those who are. I am firmly convinced that attitudes about gays are developed in the same manner as racial attitudes; they are a function of parental and peer influence or, in many cases, of the ignorant rantings of ministers of certain churches. With regard to the military, Truman ran into the same arguments that anti-gay forces are raising when he determined to integrate the armed services. He was right. They were wrong.

  42. “Gyges 1, May 21, 2009 at 12:34 pm

    Mike,

Troll baiting is truly the sport of kings.”

I feel a bit like Tom Hanks in “Volunteers” asking this, but “What exactly is horse racing again?” :D

  43. ann, although I do not expect ignorance to be adorned with logic, I do expect it to be articulate and grammatically correct. The proper phrasing is “…he doesn’t need you LEFTIES anymore… .” The contraction “don’t” should never be used with a third person singular pronoun. Carry on.

  44. lots of opinions, but not enough volunteers for the military or the congress. Also, the President lacks the legal authority to change the law (do your homework)

  45. I was in the Army in the mid 1980s. During my service I knew of three different gay soldiers. It seemed to me that everyone in the unit knew these guys were gay. It was the 80s and it caused a few snickers and jokes, but it certainly did nothing to hurt anyone’s morale.

    Anne,

If you think so little of the American soldier as to assume that they’re such wilting daisies that they will suffer from the vapors at the very thought that a fellow soldier may be gay, you’re the one with the problem. Most of our allies have integrated militaries and (despite the claims from reactionary bigots) they experienced no real degradation of morale or readiness when they stopped the discrimination. Read a little before opening your mouth and you can pretend that aren’t just an ignorant reactionary.

As for the gay soldiers in the ancient world, you really need to do a little reading. Pederasty had nothing to do with it. The pederastic relationship in the ancient world wasn’t considered to be indicative of a non-heterosexual orientation. The gender of the sexual partner had less to do with sexuality that who was penetrating whom. Penetration was seen as manly, while being penetrated was seen as effeminate.

Nonetheless, the Boeotians did have gay soldiers. Known as the ‘sacred band’ (hieros lokhos), this group of soldiers consisted of paired soldiers who were also lovers. The Thebans thought enough of this group that they spread them throughout the Theban front ranks in an attempt to bolster morale.

Hate mongering know-nothings like you are the greatest threat America faces today. It is my fervent hope that by the time my three children come to adulthood, your type of bigotry has been relegated to the trash heap of history. Judging from what I see among my Gen-Y friends (my wife and I are older, but we can still hang with the younger crowd), we’re on our way. As we drive down the highway of history, we’ll be sure to wave at you clutching your fist impotently at the side of the road.

    Bye, bye!
