We have yet another “honor killing” in the Middle East. An unnamed Jordanian man was charged on Sunday with murdering his 22-year-old daughter after finding out that she was pregnant. He killed her and her unborn child with a sword to preserve the honor of his family.
The father and his brother took the woman into the doctor when she complained about stomach pains. All three were surprised to learn that she was six months pregnant. On the way home, the father pulled over and stabbed the woman 25 times in her stomach with a sword. He later confessed to the crime and his brother was charged with premeditated murder. Notably, the state is holding the boyfriend in custody for his own protection to prevent his imminent execution by the family.
There are almost three dozen recorded cases of women being executed in honor killings each year in Jordan. While viewed as more modern than most of its neighbors, Jordan’s legislature still opposes efforts to force more severe punishment for honor killings, which are often the subject of low sentences or dismissals.

That sentence speaks volumes about the nature of the conflict between East and West. “Modern,” indeed, in a twelfth century sort of way.
Can Islam survive if women are free?
To CCD–no. And if these women would exercise a little home made justice of their own with said sword the whole of human evolution would actually speed us out of these darker ages.
I am a religiously tolerate person. I believe that a person can worship a Maytag or now my LG washing machine. However, one’s right to practice the religion of their choice ends with murdering two people.
It is very difficult to remember in these cases that we have to have civilized trials to deal with this horror in this country.
Speaking of brutality toward women, I wonder how many botched female genital mutilations emergency rooms see every week in the U.S.?
