Leading Israeli Rabbi and Shas Party Leader Calls for a Plague on President Mahmoud Abbas and The Palestinian People Before The Start of Negotiations

Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef called for a lethal plague on the head of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian people — shortly before the start of negotiations with the Palestinians.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday distanced himself from Yosef’s comments. A spokeman said that praying for death and plague on the Palestinian people (and specifically its president) does not “represent the views of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu or the Israeli government.” That is reassuring. It makes negotiations a bit awkward when you are waiting for a plague to kill the guy across the table and all of the men, women and children in his country.

According to reports, Yosef used his weekly sermon to call for death of Abbas and all Palestinians — praying for “the Lord strike them down.”

Yosef has been known to make other shocking statements, including his recent denouncing of the secular education system and calling some secular people “fools” who behave like “animals.” He later added that parents who send their children to secular schools will be punished in both this world and the afterlife.

  1. Why does this sound familiar? Oh, yes, Robertson and Falwell. Of course their determination was that the punishment of hurricanes and 9/11 were deserved vengance where this fellow seems to want to prempt God’s plan to smite; still it sounds so familiar.

  2. This is not the kind of Orthodox Jewish thinking I learned form my grandfather…the statement is despicable, especially from a rabbi, putting the Jews on the same level as the ‘clerics’ who call for jihad and death to all enemies.

Sounds as though the good rabbi is a plague unto himself

  4. AY,

Are you channeling dead French philosophers today?

“Hell is other people.” – Jean-Paul Sartre

  5. Yeah, calling down a plague or horde of locusts on your adversary at the start of negotiations definitely puts a chill on things.

  6. I do not believe calling down plagues was mentioned by Dale Carnegie as one of the ways to win friends and influence people.

  7. Anyone, including a Jew like me, who believes that Jews are somewhat smarter than the general population, can use this Rabbi’s ignorance to disprove that notion.

  8. if the plague happens i’d worry about him, as it is it’s kinda like when the fundies boycotted disney for gay days. just goes to show how much pull he’s really got.

didn’t Michael Jackson have an outfit like that?

  9. There is something about living in a desert that just makes everyone crazy and then they project their delusions onto their god; srsly, Islamists, Jews, Christians, Arizonans, Texans…

    From Israel Jewish Scene:

“Singer gets flogged over ‘forbidden’ gig
Rabbi convenes special religious court to carry out punishment against newly religious man who sang in front of integrated audience of men, women”

“…On Wednesday, Yitzhak and other rabbis conducted a rare ceremony in which they flogged Erez Yechiel, a newly religious singer who was seeking atonement for various religious offences he made in the past.”

  10. LK,

In all fairness, not all desert dwellers are nuts. I point to FFLEO and rcampbell as prime examples of non-insane desert dwellers.

But then again, there is that whole Sheriff Joe Arpaio thing, too. :D As a sidebar, I find it ironic that the word for Sheriff in German is Sheriff.

  11. lottakatz Some of the craziest people in Texas live in East Texas and it is very green with tall pine trees. There are other crazy people in West Texas which is dry, and the trees are about one foot high. Stay in the cities if you come to Texas. Better yet just go to Austin and forget the rest of it.

  12. BIL, I should have said “From a historical perspective” and then moved on to a general insult to all desert civilizations and the religions hey spawn. LOL. I stand corrected and of course, present blawg companions are always excepted.

Swear to god this is a true story: I had a good friend that had to move to texas and he would keep in touch by phone with the better half an I. He hated Texas, not at first but that’s what it came to over time.

One night about 9:30pm he calls and from the tone of his voice he’s had a bad day. After a long litany of grievances he finished his tale of woe with his ‘shopping for a present for my girlfriend’ story.

His last stop for the day and obviously the last straw was a trip to a fairly nice store where he and another man, a stereotypical middle-aged Texan, were wandering around the same department. A salesperson approached the other man and finds out the man is shopping for his wife, he needs a birthday present or some-such. The sales person offers a number of suggestions which are rebuffed and finally says ‘how about a nice book, we have a large book selection’. The Texan says, “naw, she’s got one of those’. :-)

My friend, a college educated liberal and an avid reader said Texas was killing him and making him crazy. He did go kind of nuts, stopped taking is meds (according to a mutual friend that visited him) and died a couple of years later. I blame Texas :-)

It is good to hear from you! Your comment was spot on, but it applies to all faiths and all peoples. Just look at the Christian Teapublicans listening to a Mormon like Glenn Beck accuse Obama of not being a real Christian!

  14. Doesn’t that guy look like he should be smoking a few spliffs and chilling? I mean, look at the shades, the beard, the freaky threads, whatever it is he’s drinking.

Girlfriend’s probably got the poor dude on some kind of cleansing diet or whatever and he’s jonesing. Get him some oreos and a doob and he’ll be back to his old mellow self. Go over to Ramallah and score himself some baba ganoush and halvah.

So every time some Muslim crackpot outfit imposes biblical punishment on some schmuck there is invariably a post about how backward and oppressive Muslims are. Can we get a repost of one of those things with a find-n-replace Islam/Jewish edit?

It would save us all a lot of time if someone just created a template with blank fields for the religion so we could use it to paint all believers of today’s morons-acting-badly-in-the-name-of-their-particular-kosmic-muffin sin.

  16. re FFLEO … he wrote in a much earlier post that his house is mostly solar powered (or some such alternative energy source) and given the heat and location of his home he has to ration the cooling so probably won’t be posting much during the day … he occasionally posts late at night.

  17. How can you pretend that this is not what Israel is all about?

Why do people expect Palestinians to stop fighting for their right to live in their homes? Palestinians, like all human beings want their dignity. They want to be able to visit their relatives in other cities and towns. They want to be able to close their homes to soldiers invading them. They are not asking for much, these oppressed people are simply fighting for their rights as human beings!

watch this to see first hand.
