In a curious move, the Bush Administration is now refusing a demand from the duly elected Iraqi government for a date of withdrawal. It appears that we are not done rescuing the Iraqis — no matter what the Iraqis may think. So it appears that a continued open-ended occupation now opposed by a majority of voters, a majority in Congress, and a majority of Iraqis will continue until the White House is satisfied. It appears that all that business about the freely elected government was simply aspirational.
State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos issued the rejection: “The US government and the government of Iraq are in agreement that we, the US government, we want to withdraw, we will withdraw. However, that decision will be conditions-based.”
One condition is apparently not the will of the Iraqi people or its government. While the Bush Administration insists that it is not an “occupying power,” this decision would confirms that status. If the Iraqi government cannot demand our departure by a date certain, it would seem that we remain in the role of an occupying power.
On Tuesday, Iraq insisted that it will not consent to any security part with the United States without a date for the pullout of U.S. troops.

Well, now it is established that the question wasn’t answered. And Martha got everything wrong (in reference to me) It’s funny how a keyboard and an Internet connection could delude (even a bored Psych student at GWU)in believing that they could invent facts or have the hubris to create suppositions about someone without the slightest shred of knowledge.
All in all … that was a lot of typing by a man (posing as a woman) in order to avoid answering two very simply worded questions.
Finally, in all the silly posting by bored students – this one is most revealing.
What is in the American pedigree, which deludes us into thinking that we can continue, and improve the Greco-Roman paradigm of hegemony? Nation building-a ruse, and global policing is self-centered, and economically self-destructive. We can sophistically tout that we are the inherit “leader” of the free, and not so free, world. But those self-serving aspirations are not consistent with the laws of terrestrial cosmology, or the limitations of the national treasury. When are we, as a supposedly “advanced civilization”, stop operating out of the id and the ego, and shift to a paradigm that, without fear, recognizes the mutuality of humanity, and its immutable determination to be free from imposed internal, or external ideology? For in a couple of centuries from now, will anybody, living in the here and now, rule the world?
Untempered material expansion is the “pathogenic” aspiration of those who do not seek, nor contemplate, a truly relevant purpose based on collective human potential. It is this deficit in consciousness, that keeps most of humanity hungry, and in a state of violent strife!

It is interesting that you compare one illegal and ill-conceived war in Vietnam with another illegal and ill-conceived war in Iraq. Is it a coincidence that your savior, George W. Bush is still AWOL from his reserve air group during the Vietnam war? Say hi to Niblet for us.

You are right. That is a good line. Almost as good as “how did our oil turn up under their sand?”
Indeed – and what a liberation. We’ve liberated them from the threat of nuclear annihilation by annihilating them the old fashioned way. We’ve liberated them from ‘tyranny’ using the newly designed form of ‘occupation.’ Now if all goes as planned – the United States, with the UK stooges in tow, will further liberate Iraq from its oil.
Congress, not unlike Iraq, is still occupied. There isn’t much opportunity to get anything done until there is actually a relevant majority in both houses. Right now, tactically speaking, it would seem that Congress needs to practice restraint from knee jerk maneuvers. The corporate media are scouring the planet for tid-bits. Just look how they framed Obama’s comments according to McCain’s instructions… so unless you’re able to follow much of what Congress does, without the heavily distorted commentary (even from the ‘good guys’ much of the information in the news is very misleading.
It is my opinion that the greater good isn’t in losing more freedom or bludgeoning the war-mongers. Using our troops as a political weapon is equally distasteful, even more so since we’ve been abusing them beyond comprehension because of our dangerous lack of mature leadership as a Nation. Adding the war-funding as a political foot-ball might look attractive, but it could be deadly … in many ways.
It would be a good time to develop very good questions. The answers tend to be more useful, when the questions are contextually sound.

It is mind numbing to me that Congress will most likely grant not just telecom immunity, but give this president (or any president), more secret surveillance powers that ever before. Why? Because cheney has shown himself to be trustworthy? Only a few Senators with clearance even know what powers they will be granting tomrrow. They are making a whole new law without knowing even 10% of what they are approving.
We clearly have 2 remaining branches of govt., and by tomorrow, one when it comes to the American public’s 4th ammendment rights. In the meantime, this Congress sees yet another example of how mendacious/malcious this administration really is. They just don’t seem to care. It doesn’t matter how many or how serious the lies have been, Congress does nothing. I don’t care who thinks I’m overreacting–this is how democracy dies and dictators take hold.
Jill, regarding your last question, I haven’t seen ANYONE do anything, including members of our own Congress. Who SHOULD have done something a long time ago.
Tell the Iraqis to shine on the bush administration till the next administration gains power. The new administration will get right out of Iraq under obama. Oh wait….
Will Congress now withdrawl funding? They should. This certainly puts the administration’s real intent into the open. This war was illegal from its inception and our occupation is illegal now. Can the international community do anything?
