A Swiss lawyer has cited threats to the life of Muntadhar al-Zeidi and beatings in custody as the basis for a request for political asylum in Switzerland. The Iraqi journalist is still in prison after throwing his shoes at George W. Bush.
Geneva-based lawyer Mauro Poggia is pursuing the request with the Swiss government.
It will make for an interesting request. Al-Zeidi is now an international superstar. Yet, he may indeed have continued trouble in Iraq. Yet, throwing objects at world leaders is generally not viewed as a form of political speech as opposed to a criminal act.

LOL! If Bush was to start pardoning anyone connected with so called “torture”…….
HE WOULD HAVE TO START WITH JAY ROCKEFELLER, NANCY PELOSI, AND EVERY OTHER DEMOCRATIC SENATOR & REPRESENTATIVE THAT HAD DIRECT KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT THE US WAS DOING TO GET INFORMATION FROM DETAINEES!
You fools here don’t think beyond the end of your noses! Do you really REALLY think that Bush would be so dumb as to not realize that the wacko left would DEMAND a new administration “investigate” his crimes and WOULD NOT BY HIMSELF INSURANCE BY KEEPING EVERY DEMOCRATIC LEADER IN CONGRESS FULLY INFORMED AND IN THE LOOP!!!!
“He could also stay in Crawford and help George W. remove brush.”
Perhaps, given the language differences, al-Zeidi might do us all a public service by accidentally “removing ‘bush’ when he was given permission to remove ‘brush’ (understandable mistake since a bush is technically brush, only a “r” separates the two words, and everyone knows that the Bushes, especially Georgie, are dense).
Definition of Brush: “A dense growth of ‘bushes’ or shrubs”
Surely, that type of defense law logic would stand up in a Texas-style court of law.
I think there is a new house in Texas that has a lot of security that would be great for him. He could also stay in Crawford and help George W. remove brush. As long as he keeps his shoes on, he should be ok.
Buddha and Jack–groan! 🙂
Buddha,
Are you harboring an illegal?
The Ottoman Empire. Crushed under the onslaught of the Sofa and Sectional tribes . . . I have one of their refugees in my living room.
It’s too bad the Ottoman Empire is no longer around; the shoe guy could rest easy there.
@BuelahMan,
In America, he might have been shot. Oh…no… that would only be if he were on a subway platform.
I pause to wonder if this had happened in Washington, by an American, would they have the same treatment?
Beatings? Taser, maybe?
Arrest, prosecution… sure.
Beatings and the other… not so much.
How can I throw my ass at him so he can kiss it?
Asylum? Hell, I want to give him a medal.
I would have suggested Holland for him. They appreciate a good wooden shoe thrown at an even more wooden figure.
