Walter Cronkite, once known as the “most trusted man in America,” is dead at 92. He passed away at a time of tremendous changes in the media, particularly at his beloved CBS. As he would say, “That’s the way it is.”
Cronkite was the gold standard of the “old guard” — serious journalists who lead the networks during their most transformative and influential period. Yet, he also became one of the first celebrity journalists — a trend that would turn news into a personality driven industry (as vividly shown by his friend and contemporary Barbara Walters). Cronkite’s celebrity and iconic status, however, was not so troubling because he was a serious and honorable newsman. He offered a sober and unbiased look at the news and world leaders. He was recruited in 1950 by the other great icon of his generation: Edward R. Murrow
CBS is now struggling with a ratings drive under Katie Couric, who is perhaps the greatest example of celebrity anchors. Couric’s celebrity status, however, never translated into ratings for the Tiffany Network and she has racked up some of the worst ratings in the history of the network.
He reportedly died from cerebrovascular disease and complications from dementia.

I know all about the USS liberty, supposedly it was an accident but it might not have been. However if I were in the same position as the Israeli government on the eve of a major war, I might do the same thing to save my soldiers if I had the slightest doubt that my intentions were going to be given up and cost the lives of my country men. Yes I am a supporter of Israel because that country is the only country in the middle east that is 1) a democracy and 2) believes in individual liberty for their citizens.

I have vivid memories of Walter Cronkeit guiding us through a truly terrible time unfolding on our television screens those days in November of 1963.
We always called him “Cronky Walkeit” in our family, our own affectionate nickname for someone who was like a favorite, wise, uncle.

Did Walter Cronkite tell us about the June 8, 1967 attack on the USS Liberty by israel in order to blame the Egyptians and get US into their war. Did Cronkite tell about how LBJ had that recently dead traitor Robert McNamara call the navy jets back that were on their way to help the USS Liberty? Some 34 Americans died and 179 wounded. The men were threatened with prison if they spoke about the atrocities perpetraated by these fake friends of America.
Did Cronkite tell the world how the jews murdered hundreds of Egyptian POWs? No, I think not. Like I said, if jews like you, then you are no good. Period. To be good means that jews don’t like you.

Glenn Greenwald has a revelatory interview with Chuck Todd on his website. The contrast between Mr. Todd and Walter Cronkite could not be greater. This nation is desperate for actual journalists and real reporting. I cannot imagine any of the major newsplayers (except for journalist, Helen Thomas), actually contradicting the authorities in our political, military and financial classes. We need people like Mr. Cronkite so badly. It is my guess that any network that hired someone like him would see their ratings soar. Well said. I also grew up watching and listening to Walter Cronkite. He was our eyes and our ears during big events in my lifetime. Whether it was the nightly reports on the debacle in Vietnam to the shooting of JFK to the space program, he was the one telling us what he saw, not what a particular political party wanted him to tell us. The concept of spinning the news was not even imagined and he would have had nothing of it. AY, I remember the LBJ story and he was correct. Vietnam was lost and Cronkite knew it and he told us so. His passing is the end of an era where the media was a watchdog and did challenge the authorities when something wasn’t right. He is already missed.

Pardon me, but I think “middle America” is over-rated. I think LBJ’s analysis would be better stated as he lost “thinking America.” As in most things, the middle follows the front and is burdened by the rear.
I remember reading a story a few years ago when LBJ was quoted as saying “If I have lost Cronkite I have lost middle America.” This was in response to the continued involvement in Viet Nam.
One of the most trusted, kind of reminds you of Walt Disney. Though they had different personal agendas.

Always concerned with the integrity and accuracy of his work, Cronkite embodied the seriousness of his material. And what material: from the assassination of Camelot, to Selma, to “One small step…,” , to “I am not a crook,” Cronkite served as the narrator to my history. Too often today, we endure the rise of the celebrity newsman, the celebrity doctor,the celebrity lawyer, even the celebrity politician–bubble-heads armed with mild accomplishments magnified by the prism of TV into “giants” of their professions with feet of clay. Weigh him against the crop of current day faux-anchors, O’Reilly, Beck, Couric, ad nauseum, and you will see what we have lost. I wonder when this cult of personality will end, so we can get back to world of the meritorious who have neither the face nor the disposition for celebrity, merely ability. It is they who seem to serve our interests, instead of their own.
