My recent USA Today column discusses how the Democrats have suddenly discovered God in elections after recruiting various far-left ministers to run on faith-based anti-Trump messages. I discussed how Divinity Schools have shown the same trend as other departments in higher education with a radical shift to the left. That was evident in a controversy this week at Point Loma Nazarene University, where Dean of Students Jason Cha told student leaders that identifying as being “in Christ alone” is a sign of “white privilege.”
Dean Cha is an example of the resumes that draw appointments and presentations in higher education. According to The College Fix, Cha’s 2023 dissertation at Azusa Pacific University was titled “Raging Waters of Whiteness: Addressing White Evangelical Racism in Higher Education.” His scholarship draws on critical pedagogy, incorporating “critical race theory, critical white studies, and evangelical postcolonial studies.”
Roughly three years later, he was made Dean of Students at PLNU.
As discussed in the USA Today column, the same pedagogy is evident in the crop of progressive proselytizing in the midterm elections. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico has declared that “I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity.” His church leaders at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church admit that most of its members are likely agnostic or atheist.
Other Democratic minister-candidates have similar far-left views of religion, including Iowa’s Lutheran minister-turned-candidate Sarah Trone Garriott, who is under attack for participating in a Satanic wedding.
They are part of a movement of “resistance preaching” to organize far-left ministers to use religious pitches to support a blue wave. Harvard actually selected an atheist as its head “chaplain” a few years ago.
Critics of Cha posted an Instagram post revealing the alleged statement to students as part of the fall leadership training.
Cha has long been an outspoken critic of what he views as “white privilege” in religion and the need to prioritize “racial justice,” including past presentations on “Whiteness as Witness: Re-conceptualizing Diversity in Christian Higher Education.”
Asked for a comment on the controversy, Lora Fleming, associate vice president of communications and public affairs at PLNU, defended the statement, noting that the university’s commitment to “confront racism, love our neighbors, and seek justice is not separate from our Christian discipleship. It flows from it.”
The school has been under fire over the shift to the far left in faculty appointments, a familiar story in higher education.
The university was previously under fire over reports that it has held such sessions as “decolonizing yoga” and refused to recognize a Turning Point USA chapter.
Critics also pointed to a prior controversy involving a poet brought to campus to share a view of Jesus as “agnostic and horny” and an “erotic lover.”
As will not come as much of a surprise to readers of this blog, I do not support calls to bar such views or to remove faculty who publish radical values. Higher education relies on academic freedom and free speech to maintain vibrant intellectual environments.
The problem is that, while claiming such protections for diverse viewpoints, today’s faculty have engaged in open bias and intolerance in hiring faculty. The faculty and administrators in control of higher education are the most intolerant and orthodox in generations. They have purged departments of conservatives and libertarians while creating an ideological echo chamber.
This is a private university, so it depends on donors and alumni to change the culture by withholding support.
At state schools, I have also opposed efforts to dictate curriculum and class content. I have encouraged state legislatures to tie further public subsidies to real, substantial changes that create intellectual diversity among faculty.
If we are to protect these bastions of free speech, legislatures will need to play a more active role in addressing the exclusion of both faculty candidates and speakers on public campuses. Too many faculty members still view citizens as a captive audience expected to keep funding their departments, while excluding conservative or dissenting views held by many, if not most, citizens in a given state.
If faculty members want to maintain echo chambers for their own viewpoints, they should seek private donors to sustain such intolerance and orthodoxy.
Legislatures can demand evidence that schools maintain intellectually diverse faculty when determining the level of continued support from citizens. Otherwise, it is ridiculous to expect the public to subsidize their ideological echo chambers.
For a school established as “a simple Bible college,” it now seems determined to be something quite different. What that is remains a matter of faith best left to the faculty, the students, and the alumni.
As for Dean Cha, the faculty of Point Loma Nazarene University has every right to pick their leadership, and donors have every right to base their contributions on those choices.

Gee the left loves stereotyping. I guess Reggie White was correct.. Blacks have the gift of athletics and have sports privledge, Hispanics have the gift of family and can live 15 in one house so have family privledge, Asians have the gift of technology, can turn a wristwatch into a TV so have technology privledge. What whites have the gift of organization so have organization privledge. Seems the good professor is a serious racist.

Cry harder, anonymous. We can’t hear you.
As for Talirico defeating Paxton, aren’t you the same person who said Karmela was going to beat Trump? Hahahaha! How did that turn out for ya?
……………………………..
According to CBS News, Elon Musk dumped $277 million on Trump’s 2024 campaign. That’s a lot of money to defeat a remarkably weak candidate. Yet Trump won the Popular Vote by only 1%.
Therefore the $366 million that Musk is spending this year, really shows how scared Republicans are.
Cry harder, anonymous. We can’t hear you.
Is there any way you could be more dishonest? Trump won all seven swing states. That’s what his campaign was designed to do. That’s also what Karmela’s campaign was designed to do, but it failed in all seven of them.
The popular vote is irrelevant. The campaigns of both major party nominees are designed around one goal, and one goal only: maximizing electoral votes. If the popular vote mattered, we’d see vastly different campaigns.
Plus, with the polarization of the country, winning by 1 or 2 percent is the most feasible – particularly because, as mentioned above, campaigns are not designed to try and win the popular vote.
If donations to a political party are now, suddenly, a measure of how “scared” that party is, then consider that billionaires on the Dem side donated hundreds of millions too:
Elon Musk contributed more than all those liberals combined.
And where does the Constitution mention ‘swing states’?
That’s the best you got? Swing states don’t exist because they’re not in the Constitution? That level of sheer stupidity is exactly why so much money needs to be spent: it’s expensive to overcome stupidity.
So the people screaming about stereotyping for the past fifty years are now stereotyping all white people? You really can’t help but laugh at these fools.
Cha wears a T shirt saying “Jesus wasn’t white.” So how does it make any sense to refer to being “in Christ” as white privilege?
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico has declared that “I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity.” His church leaders at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church admit that most of its members are likely agnostic or atheist. So in other words he is a liar. As are those that attend that church and are not actually Christians.
The people attending Talarico’s church aren’t showing up just for the hell of it. And ‘who’ is Estovir to be judging the purity of Christians?? Do Republicans have a monopoly on Christianity?
It has nothing to do with political party or purity. It has to do with people who say “I hate Christianity” or “I’m an atheist” and then refer to themselves as Christian.
The term ‘Christian’ was effectively hi-jacked by Republicans quite some time ago. Consequently the term is now viewed in a negative light by most people under 40. That’s what Talirico meant.
And if a congregation gathers, on Sundays, at a Presbyterian church, they’re as Christian as any conservative congregation. One need’nt hold up posters of aborted fetuses to qualify as a Christian.
“The term ‘Christian’ was effectively hi-jacked by Republicans quite some time ago. “
The above is the usual foolishness of anonymous. I don’t know that anyone controls the Christian vote, but I do know that much of the left has given up on religion. That is even seen here with our anonymous creatures who constantly bash religion. You guys have to learn to be consistent.
Ding ding ding! We have a winner for stupidest comment of the day. It’s so blindingly stupid that no response can possibly get through the thick skull of the commenter.
Still, no, the term “Christian” was never hijacked by anybody. That’s sheer silliness and childishness.
No, the term is not viewed negatively by people under 40. Maybe in your insular little left-wing dingbat group, but not the rest of society, i.e., normal people.
No, there is no connection at all between holding up posters of aborted fetuses and expressing skepticism that a person who says, “I hate Christianity” and “I am an atheist” is, in fact, a Christian. In fact, only a completely mindless numskull would think there is any validity to a person who says “I hate Christianity” or “I am an atheist” can possibly be an actual Christian. Only in the modern mindless left-wing world where words have no meaning at all, or mean their opposites, is that possible. That is a world that has virtually no brain, and what little brain it has is completely bonkers.
. . . if a congregation gathers, on Sundays, at a Presbyterian church, they’re as Christian as any conservative congregation.
So if a congregation of Satanists gathers at a Presbyterian church, they’re as Christian as anyone else? How do people get this stupid?
Musk Dumping Cash On Paxton
Trillionaire Elon Musk, now based in Austin, has given $10 million to Lone Star Libery Pac in support of Ken Paxton, the embattled Republican senatorial candidate struggling to stop James Talarico.
Musk is believed to have started the rumor that Talarico had been treated at an Ohio mental health facility. Talirico had actually been home in Texas dealing with a case of the flu. But the mental health rumor was repeated so many times on ‘X’ that the Ohio facility was forced to issue a statement saying Talarico had never been there.
Musk has reportedly spent $366 million on behalf of Republican candidates in this election cycle; easily making him this year’s biggest Republican donor by far.
Talirico has Republicans nauseously dreading a Paxton defeat. Such a development could break the Republican hold over Texas, the nation’s second most populous state. What’s more, a Talarico victory could inspire a host of Christian Democrats that could change Southern politics. That’s why Turley wrote this column: ‘He’s seriously worried that liberal Christians impact American politics’.
you lie. He allegedly has spent $276 million this year on MIDTERM ELECTIONS. If you continue to lie on this site, we will continue to expose your lies https://www.rd.com/article/extreme-money-in-politics/https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/12/us/politics/elon-musk-midterms.html
Estovir,
I bet you don’t have an NYT subscription. Because if you read this article you would have seen that $366 million figure.
That $366 figure represents total Musk spending since July of last year. Of that $366, $276 was spent since July of this year. That’s a lot of cash to dump in only a few months! But it’s chump change to Musk.
But thanks for posting from the NYT. It made it simple for me! And don’t forget to get yourself a subscription.
Cry harder, anonymous. We can’t hear you.
