Minnesota Man Shoots Himself While Trying to Loosen Lug Nut on Tire With Shotgun

300px-Lug-nuts150px-ShotgunAction.JPGMost of us when faced with a stuck lug nut on a flat tire will look for some leverage. A man in South Kitsap, Washington, however, looked for something with a bit more firepower. He was injured when he tried to loosen the nut with a 12-gauge shotgun.

The 66-year-old man shot himself in both legs in the attempt at auto repair-NRA style.

What is most remarkable is that the police say that the man was not intoxicated. He has been charged with one count of public endangerment.

This adds to the list of “things not to do with guns” with dragonfly hunting and picture hanging.

As this video shows, anyone know the best way to loosen a lug nut:

  1. stuff like this should happen more often. maybe then someone might rethink the carrying guns thing more carefully.
as for the guy who shot himself while behaving like a moron: boo hoo

  2. When you get it ready, call and I want to post it on the site what stupid redncks do for fun. Hey ya’ll get a load of this, last words of a true red neck.

Thank goodness you didn’t say “my son/daughter likes the arial view…” Before you get any ideas though, check out how the pros do it:

  4. Buddha;

Now if you’ll excuse me I need to make some measurements in the back yard.

    That’s just what I was thinking…. ;D

  5. One lives to be of service.

Now if you’ll excuse me I need to make some measurements in the back yard . . .

  6. mespo/JT,

These guys seem to prefer both firearms AND the trebuchet . . .

Any job worth doing is worth overdoing.

  7. I think this a Darwinian example of “survival of the fittest”. How he lived so long with judgement like that is surprising. If this isn’t an argument for “thinning the herd” nothing is.

  8. JT/Buddha:

For household tasks, I prefer the trebuchet. It slings dirty cloths downstairs, really mixes a dry martini, and the schnauzer has come to love the aerial view of the yard before landing in the soft leaf pile. A multi-purpose tool indeed with no sharp edges.

  9. Might I suggest a compromise tool between 9mm and blunderbuss. The Taurus Arms “Judge” revolver shoots both .45’s and .410 shotgun shells in one easy hand held unit. And it’s small enough to fit in the glove box for those unexpected breakdowns that always happen on a road trip.

  10. Another case of using the wrong tool for the job. Everyone knows you need a Glock 9mm to unscrew lung nuts!

  11. The story you link to talks about a man from Washington state who shot a hole through his wall. It has nothing to do with shooting lug nuts.

The lug nut story is also from Washington state, but is two years old. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21758302/

The common theme in these two stories is that men in their 60s from Washington state do stupid things with shotguns. So why does the headline refer to Minnesota?

  12. I’m thinking this isn’t the first tire changing/firearm story I’ve read. And that is just sad.
