Faith-Healing Parents in Oregon Convicted of Negligent Homicide

A church in Oregon has the infamous reputation of killing children in the name of faith. Now, two parents — Jeff and Marci Beagley — have been found guilty of negligent homicide. Their case was discussed in this prior column. It is a welcomed charge (often religious parents are given lesser charges in the death of their children due to faith-healing), but the likely sentence is likely to be relatively low given the history of this church and the loss of life.

They will face only 16-18 months in the death of their sixteen-year-old Neil who died from a urinary tract blockage that could have been easily addressed by doctors. I have argued that faith-healing parents are being given special and lenient treatment over other neglectful parents, here.

The Followers of Christ church rejects conventional medicine in favor of faith-healing.

  1. “Your religious beliefs do not trump others rights. That’s the delusion of theocracy and the dream of fundamentalists.

If you want to think religion gives you an out for any kind of behavior? If you want to argue the Constitution does not apply simply because religion is your excuse?

Simply you are both wrong and a fool; neither of which merit further response.” – Buddha Is Laughing

No Buddha, you are the fool.

Scroll up and read next time before running your mouth.

My position is that religion does NOT give you the right for any kind of behavior.

Try reading before spouting off next time and you won’t look like the fool you accuse others of being.

  2. Buddah is that all you got half witt ass hat and moron. Those meds must be calming you down.

  3. 30 percent I’d leave if I were you. These people are clearly disturbed. Hopefully this blog is monitored and someone will look into that threat made against your life. That is not something to make light of.

  4. Ecookie,

Someone claims that death threats were made against this screenname. I don’t see it.

  5. Douche bag?

Well, I see your debate skills are up to par with Wayne, Zero Percenter.

All courts derive their power from either the Federal or State Constitutions which must be compliant with the Federal Constitutions as a minimum threshold because of the Supremacy Clause. Period. If you don’t know this, you’re not only not a lawyer, you’re a wishful thinking half-wit. So call me a liar again, asshat. I’ll call you a blind moron for you efforts, Mr. “The Constitution Doesn’t Apply”.

Basing any kind of abusive behavior on a religious preference is going to fail the Lemon test. Condoning abuse by inaction is no different than tacit endorsement: explicitly against the Constitution. Free exercise does not allow for violation of criminal law even in the post-Smith era. Lemon v Kurtzman still applies. If you are relying upon Church of Lukumi Babalu Aye v Hialeah, that is the gray area and applied to animal sacrifice, not abusing children. If you think Lukumi doesn’t have limits, see Locke v Davey. There ARE restrictions on religious practice being funded or approved by government. But thanks to the Rehnquist court, that gray area testing is far muddier than the pre-Smith standard of a compelling governmental interest combined with a minimal curtailment of free exercise. This gray area will not be expanded to let any one religion break criminal laws unless the fascists on the Court also prove to be theocrats – a recipe for CERTAIN disaster. So you go on and starve a kid based on religious reasons. You’ll still go to prison under current law. Law, by the way, rooted in the Constitution. Because of the primacy of the Constitution, all U.S. law derives from it and any law that doesn’t comply with the original intent and construction except as made by amendment – such as the illegal signing statement abuses by Bush and Obama – are prime facie illegal and unconstitutional.

  6. This is like a bad Saturday Night Live skit that never ends. I did like that clown though.

  7. By the way, anytime one of you wants to make those threats in person, you let me know.

  8. And continuing to call me mental is just more of a sign of your own derangement.

After all, I’m not the one making death threats.

  9. Bdaman,

Is this your mothers brother fathers son? I have heard about families such as this.

  10. As I pointed out, AY, you’re clearly a troll.

    Clearly affiliated with these two.

    You can’t defend your argument.

You stall and dodge simple questions and when cornered, and your position crumbles, you turn to personal attacks, and ganging up with your troll friends.

Well, one of them just threatened my life.

So your character has been exposed for what it is.

Normal people do not make death threats or associate with those who do.
