Faith-Healing Parents in Oregon Convicted of Negligent Homicide

A church in Oregon has the infamous reputation of killing children in the name of faith. Now, two parents — Jeff and Marci Beagley — have been found guilty of negligent homicide. Their case was discussed in this prior column. It is a welcomed charge (often religious parents are given lesser charges in the death of their children due to faith-healing), but the likely sentence is likely to be relatively low given the history of this church and the loss of life.

They will face only 16-18 months in the death of their sixteen-year-old Neil who died from a urinary tract blockage that could have been easily addressed by doctors. I have argued that faith-healing parents are being given special and lenient treatment over other neglectful parents, here.

The Followers of Christ church rejects conventional medicine in favor of faith-healing.

  1. I said it before and I have said it now. Medicine is a practice based upon statistics. Not what is good for you is good for others. If a parent has an alternative theory based upon some other practice not recognized by the state let them have a shot.

The only people who benefit from it are the medical and pharmaceutical companies.

The one where the insurance company finally took its blinders off of was the helmet law. It cost between 1 to 15 million to take care of a person that was wearing a helmet in Motorcycle crash. If they died, the liability is the policy max. They finally figured that out as a business decision. Now they don’t oppose it.

  2. “But why do you insist on “winning” these discussions? ever think people may think that is rather strange?” Byron

    What are you talking about?

Why do I try to win debates on the issues you’re asking me?

Or why do I defend myself against a slew of unfounded personal attacks on my character and sanity?

Which one do you have a problem with?

I am not trying to bully you out. this isn’t my blog and I have no say in any of it.”

    Then why did you?

Why did you walk in, see me being personally attacked and join in?

I could give a rats a$$ about what your “intent” was.

What you DID is what matters.

  4. Buddha, instead of running your mouth, why don’t you scroll up and read your own original comments to me.

I was arguing against AY’s position that its ok to neglect your kids for religious reasons.

You however just walked in and started attacking me accusing me of taking the OPPOSITE position.

    I mean are you insane???

    Really, are you a lunatic?

How can you come in, insult me for AY’s position, then proceed to call me crazy?

Not being a lawyer I am at a disadvantage but what I have learned is that you do a little research and back up your case. there are other references that will refute your assertions. Most of this is just an opinion.

  6. My posts Byron, were on topic. Other than a little mild, extremely mild sarcasm at AY over his unfounded position, I said NOTHING meriting such a collective cyber bully attack.

    NOTHING.

And I challenge you, no I DARE you to scroll up to my ORIGINAL comments, and find the one that merited this multi day attack on me, my character and my sanity.

Its easy to paint someone angry if everyone gangs up to cyber bully them. If the person walks away, they’re mocked as a coward and a quitter. If they stand up to you, they’re mocked as insane and angry.

Its an ugly game you people play in here, and I’m left asking myself why I ever wanted to be part of this group.

    Maybe you’re right.

Maybe I do need my head examined.

  7. My real name is Ling U Foo but here in the United States it’s said last name first, first name last.

Is there a win or loose with this? we aren’t in a structured debate. we just share ideas as far as I know.

AY doesn’t think you are right how is he a looser? I think you are right and I think AY is right. there are many permutations of this issue, it is not straight forward. But the withholding of all medical care is child abuse.

If the parents wanted to send there child to a faith healer that used herbs and other preparations and the state made them go to a doctor then maybe AY has a point.

  9. Hey, Byron, you be the bitch now. Watch the slap he likes it rough…..

  10. “30%er:

I never said anything mean about you or attacked you. I was only speculating that you might be a particular past poster” -Byron

So you admit that your comments to me were not on topic, but personal attacks on me?

Claiming I’m some other poster is not the topic of this thread.

Your coming in to throw out accusations is just one more personal attack designed to make me look “angry” by responding to each of you.

When you see someone being ganged up on, and you walk in and join in, you’re just part of the group of thugs who’s intent is to cyber bully one blogger out.

For what reason remains to be seen.

  11. ahmen,

Is that an invitation? Swartmore mom. Did you hear about the new Chinese restaurant that opened up in Fort Worth Fu King. I will get you the address.

  12. 30%er:

I never said anything mean about you or attacked you. I was only speculating that you might be a particular past poster. Not entirely true I did post a video on the song Coming to take me away so I guess I am guilty. Maybe one or 2 other minor transgressions but nothing over the top.

You must admit that your posts follow a certain MO which is similar to some other past posters.

  13. My position was right.

If we’d stayed on topic and discussed the issue, instead of your gang of cyber bullies attempting to drown me out by a insult filibuster, then you’d have seen that early on and we wouldn’t be here now.

When someone figures out why I merited a cyber bully attack, you let me know.

Until then, I’ve got plenty of more recipes if you want to go back to the personal attacks on me.

  14. 30%er:

a few of those recipes looked good. have you tried them all or did you just cut and paste?

if you have made them which one is your favorite?

  15. selectively reading messages are you. You know its about a 20% chance of snow here Monday? I would clean my sidewalk if an ordinance applied.
