Faith-Healing Parents in Oregon Convicted of Negligent Homicide

A church in Oregon has the infamous reputation of killing children in the name of faith. Now, two parents — Jeff and Marci Beagley — have been found guilty of negligent homicide. Their case was discussed in this prior column. It is a welcomed charge (often religious parents are given lesser charges in the death of their children due to faith-healing), but the likely sentence is likely to be relatively low given the history of this church and the loss of life.

They will face only 16-18 months in the death of their sixteen-year-old Neil who died from a urinary tract blockage that could have been easily addressed by doctors. I have argued that faith-healing parents are being given special and lenient treatment over other neglectful parents, here.

The Followers of Christ church rejects conventional medicine in favor of faith-healing.

  1. Give 30%er back his pipe so he can go smoke some peaceful medicine. Maybe even eat a little magi cactus to boot. Then he’ll be back looking for the boot.

  2. You’re saying it does.

    So please explain why.

Why is it ok to neglect my kids medical treatment, but not as you say food.

Why is it not ok to deny him food?

    The Constitution IS NOT APPLICABLE.

The Constitution does not dictate civil or criminal codes.

    PERIOD.

We have civil and criminal codes against child abuse, child neglect, child endangerment and negligent homicide.

    PERIOD.

You said it does not apply.”

No, the SCOTUS said it doesn’t apply. I posted the ruling. I can repost it again if you like.

They ruled that the religious right to freedom does not give one the right to break the law.

  5. Please explain your position in easy to understand layman’s terms for poor little me.

I am not smart like you, and I do not posses your wealth of knowledge.

Please explain to me why its ok to deny my kids medical care, but not food.

    😐

Hopefully it won’t take another day for this one.

  6. “You are asking an inane question. You know the answer is no.” – Anonymously Yours

The question was inane because your position is inane.

Only an inane question would show you how untenable it is.

But FINALLY you summoned the courage to answer.

    Thank you.

    Only took a day.

Now, please correlate that “no” to the “yes” when it comes to medical care.

  7. I mean, are you people really this stupid?

All I hear is about how erudite this “crowd” is.

Yet I’ve got one guy who thinks its ok to deny kids medical treatment based on religious freedom, and another one who thinks my saying you cannot do that translates to my saying you can.

    😐

This is a level of stupid I haven’t seen before.

  8. You are asking an inane question. You know the answer is no. But you can also decide to do it if you are willing to pay the consequences. FREE CHOICE.

  9. “The only blather here is your assertions the Constitution doesn’t apply. Free practice does not mean unlimited practice. You can believe what you like. You ARE limited in how you can express it though.” -Buddha Is Laughing

You’ve got to be kidding, right?

Try reading my positions before commenting on them genius.

I’m the one making the case that you cannot deny your kids medical treatment.

Why are you pretending I’m making the opposite case???

  10. One more time for mister literate.

The question is not “SHOULD a child be starved”.

Since those words never appeared, don’t invent them.

The question is BASED ON YOUR POSITION THAT THE CONSTITUTION SAYS I CAN DENY MY KIDS MEDICAL CARE FOR RELIGIOUS REASONS, ….THEN DOES IT ALSO SAY I CAN DENY THEM FOOD?

    THATS THE QUESTION.

  11. The only blather here is your assertions the Constitution doesn’t apply. Free practice does not mean unlimited practice. You can believe what you like. You ARE limited in how you can express it though.

Seriously. Try to starve your kids and tell the cops it was on Holy Orders. You’ll be riding the pine just like all the other child killers.

  12. I’m contacting the Department of Children and Family Services to get my answer. You guys go ahead and debate it.

  13. “You are asking if a child is to be starved the answer is no” -Anonymously Yours

    😐

    …uhh, no I’m not genius.

How many more times do I need to restate a simple yes or no question before you can wrap your superior brain around it?

  14. Now your sockpuppet BDAMAN (who mysteriously always shows up with you) can now bury your a$$whooping, and it was an a$$whooping, in silly blather.

Just remember. If you ever find your position is strong enough to not crumble in the light of a single question, you let me know.

I’ll be happy to hear your answer when you can think of one.

  15. Duh,

You and I agree on somethings.

    30%er,

You are asking if a child is to be starved the answer is no. If you are doing it for medical necessity, you know what the answer is already. If you are asking because you want to prove that you can starve a child because you can, you are being inane.

  16. And the assertion that Constitution doesn’t apply to a question simply because a religious assertion at the core of the case is simply bullshit.

Any case that can be adjudicated, criminal or civil, no matter its basis, is restricted by the Constitution in the end. The Constitution is the framework for every court in this country as well as the basis of laws and the rule of law.

So you go ahead and starve your kids. Tell the cops the Constitution doesn’t apply because you starved them for religious reasons. Try it and see how long you last in the prison yard, because prison is where you’ll go. “God told me” won’t work as defense for you any better than it did for David Berkowitz (The Son of Sam) saying the Devil told him to kill via a dog worked as an affirmative defense.
