Family Research Council’s Peter Sprigg Calls For Preservation of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” . . . And The Criminalization of Homosexuality

Family Research Council’s Peter Sprigg does not appear quite ready to accept gays serving the country in the military. On Hardball, he not only opposed the elimination of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy but argued that all gays should be arrested as criminals.

Here is the exchange:

Matthews: Do you think we should outlaw gay behavior?

Sprigg: Well, I think certainly..

Matthews: I’m just asking, should we outlaw gay behavior?

Sprigg: I think the Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas which overturned the sodomy laws in this country was wrongly decided. I think there would be a place in this country for criminal sanctions against homosexual behavior.

Matthews: So we should outlaw gay behavior?

Sprigg: YES!

It is astonishing that our religious right has so much difficulty with the leaders in Iran and other countries when they hold views that seem in line with those of people like Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, here. Not only would Sprigg bar gay Americans from fighting for their country, but would arrest them. This includes presumably arresting heroes who have been decorated for bravery in combat. He might want to visit the grave site of Technical Sergeant Leonard Matlovich (1943–1988).

Sprigg has a particular problem with Lawrence v. Texas where the Supreme Court struck down laws that criminalized homosexual relations between consenting adults. Of course, limitations on religion — including acts of entanglement of church and state — are horrific and unacceptable, but it is perfectly acceptable to declare millions of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals to be criminals because of their private consensual relations.

  1. “I’m not saying that homosexuals aren’t born the way they are. I’m saying there is no scientific proof to make the claim that it’s genetic.”

So maybe this isn’t a real dispute after all (she said, hopefully).

Who cares if it is genetic or not? As long as people don’t think it’s okay to discriminate, or maintain that gay people can turn into heterosexuals, what difference does it make? (it may be of interest to scientists or whoever, I just mean it shouldn’t matter).

Whatever the “cause”, it’s far more hard-wired than religion – which is completely a “lifestyle” choice – and I doubt most religious people think they should be discriminated against on the basis of their religion or be forced to undergo therapy to change their religion.

  2. Thirty%er:

I am curious as to where the gay gene is located? Which chromosome is it found on? What is it’s designation? For example a particular CF gene is called DeltaF508, what is the designation for this gay gene you are speaking off?

I always thought there might be a genetic component but I did not know they had found the gene that determined homosexuality. That is very interesting indeed.

There is also another theory that postulates a certain dose of testosterone at a particular point during gestation may determine sexuality as well. Is it both together, does the gene cause the testosterone dose, etc.

I was wondering if you could show me the paper that you read which explained all of this.

Thanking you in advance for this interesting news from the frontiers of science.

  3. The fact that by your own admission you were entirely ignorant of the very cornerstone terminology of the topic, i.e. “nature vs nurture”, proves you are incapable of expounding intelligently on the matter.

…see…you have to actually know something about a topic prior to lecturing others on it.

  4. “Still avoiding my original statement I see which is,

There is no scientific evidence that proves it as fact.” -SADducee

Still avoiding my original point too I see, which is whether there were or were not scientific evidence one way or the other, someone who is ignorant of the basic foundations for the scientific question would NOT be the person one would debate on the issue.

It would be like debating string theory with Pauly Shore.

  5. Just to clarify….Scientists have yet to find the genetic markers for Hetorosexuality, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Addictions, Schizophrenia, Bi-Polar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety Disorder, most cancers, heart disease, stroke, height, hair colour, eye colour etc etc etc…..must I continue? In some areas they are close, however none with 100% accuracy. With that being said, all of the above traits do tend to ” run ” in families, suggesting a genetic connection.

  6. Canadian Eh

I’m not saying that homosexuals aren’t born the way they are. I’m saying there is no scientific proof to make the claim that it’s genetic. Which is the original refutation of the example give. Maybe the geneticist missed something while mapping the Gnome project.

  7. I have to give some concession to those who argue that nurture over nature determines sexual tendency. Perhaps they have never had the opportunity to converse with people who are in fact homosexual. Perhaps they have never met siblings who were nutured by the same parents and yet have different sexual tendencies. Perhaps they are themselves homosexual and were raised to hate and believe that homosexual behaviour will ensure an eternity of damnation. Whatever the reaason, I maintain that educating young people to have compassion and empathy towards all will eventually be the solution.

  8. Still avoiding my original statement I see which is,

There is no scientific evidence that proves it as fact. I agree that one can have tendencies set at an early age but you can not say it is genetic without scientific proof.

I do like how you spew your hate and personal attacks and the use of we and us.

    SADucee, ignorant
information that is above your intellectual capacity to comprehend.
unreasonable of us to burden you with more complex information until you master the basics.
we can’t expect you to know anything about the topics you expound on.

you apparently are ignorant on the issue you’re speaking on.
we’ll make an allowance for your ignorance

  9. Not that I’m comparing you to a chimpanzee mind you…

    Just intellectually speaking is all.

  10. Please first master the basics.

Then you can work on the more advanced concepts.

  11. Within forty eight hours it was front page cover news of no less that five major magazines.

  12. “When your ready I’ll explain how the myth came about on “The Gay Gene” It started with an interview on NPR.” -The SADducee

Well since you just demonstrated you were ignorant of the basic scientific term of “nature vs nurture” with regards to the issue, I doubt you could “explain” anything to anyone.

  13. See, not much sense is providing you with information that is above your intellectual capacity to comprehend.

Since you demonstrated you are unfamiliar with the most common term used to address the scientific question it would be unreasonable of us to burden you with more complex information until you master the basics.

  14. When your ready I’ll explain how the myth came about on “The Gay Gene” It started with an interview on NPR.

  15. Where is it 30%er? To save yourself some time try looking into the gnome instead of the O-zone.

  16. And we’re still waiting for you to demonstrate that you know something about the topic you are lecturing others on.
