Constance McMillen, an 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student, asked officials at Constance McMillen, an 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student, asked officials at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton if she could attend her class prom with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo. The response of the school was to cancel the entire prom to avoid her attending as a lesbian.
The cancellation had the effect (perhaps intended) to make McMillen the target of blame for destroying the long planned prom. What is striking is that these are now adults who will be shortly released into a world filled with both homosexuals and heterosexuals. Yet, the school opted to cancel a prom to avoid these adults seeing a gay couple on a date.
I have to assume that the officials knew that by canceling the event, blame would be directed at the lesbian student and the ACLU. I can only hope that the students are not so gullible or ignorant.
The school now faces a well-deserved lawsuit, here.

lol, well in that case I’ll add a hug to the curtsy…I certainly wouldn’t want to be the one responsible for leaving you crying and sobbing uncontrollably so early on a Saturday morning!
Ms. EH,
Humour? Not at all, I was speaking my heartfelt disappointment in being remissed not by anyone but by Ms.Eh herself. Oh, what a sad day this hast made. Crying and sobbing uncontrollably….the haze at the keyboard and monitor seem dull in comparison to the sadness I feel….
lol…..well AY I am glad to see that I haven’t dulled your sense of humour !
Ms. Eh,
Good Morning to you too as I suck in the mucus and wipe away the mist of tears that over shadow the eyelids. Seemingly gluing them together, to face yet another day of being remissed by none other than Ms. Eh…..
Good Morning to you also AY…( insert deep curtsy here too ) 🙂
nothing for me eh? frowning and wiping the tears away…..
Good morning to you Buddah ( insert deep curtsy here ).
Yep.
There is a lot of childish behavior going on in this story and as mespo so noted, it was not the behavior of the kids.
And good morning, ladies. (Insert tip of the hat here.)
Mespo;
I’ll third what you said, and was in fact formulating a similar reply as I scrolled a little further down and read yours. It would be interesting to hear responses from the other students at this school. It is possible in this day & age that they would be in support of Constance or the idiot school officials who made this decision. Maybe Ellen will hear of this nonsense and fund an off site prom for the students….she’s done it before.
I am not to sure that some people have the ability to think outside the box and or know what the “other” attending consequences will be or for that matter care.
mespo–
I’ll second what you said. I also agree with Professor Turley’s comment–which follows:
“I have to assume that the officials knew that by canceling the event, blame would be directed at the lesbian student and the ACLU.”
Arao:
“Spoiled selfish brat. Ruined prom for a hunded other students.”

I agree your words would be a very fair description of the Itawamba County Agricultural High School principal, and every other neo-confederate redneck in Texas who would punish a school of children just to fulfill some perceived Iron Age religious tenet. I applaud your way with words, and your perception. Surprising?
Spoiled selfish brat. Ruined prom for a hunded other students.
Tekas skolls due gaduate numb skulls. I knows, i used to lives thar but i lives hear nows. Amon my kusin
I did not send my children to Texas public schools. I wanted them to be well educated.
Not exactly on the topic of high school proms–but still school related…and one of the reasons why we have been dumbing down textbooks in this country for decades. Thank you, Texas Board of Education!
Texas Board of Education cuts Thomas Jefferson out of its textbooks.
(Think Progress, 3/12/2010)
The Texas Board of Education has been meeting this week to revise its social studies curriculum. During the past three days, “the board’s far-right faction wielded their power to shape lessons on the civil rights movement, the U.S. free enterprise system and hundreds of other topics”:
– To avoid exposing students to “transvestites, transsexuals and who knows what else,” the Board struck the curriculum’s reference to “sex and gender as social constructs.”
– The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum, “replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin.”
– The Board refused to require that “students learn that the Constitution prevents the U.S. government from promoting one religion over all others.”
– The Board struck the word “democratic” from the description of the U.S. government, instead terming it a “constitutional republic.”
As the nation’s second-largest textbook market, Texas has enormous leverage over publishers, who often “craft their standard textbooks based on the specs of the biggest buyers.” Indeed, as The Washington Monthly has reported, “when it comes to textbooks, what happens in Texas rarely stays in Texas.”

Byron,
That’s some heavily loaded language. How about something along the lines of “groups of people tend to put the perceived good of the group over that of the individuals that make up that group?”
I’ll even throw in “some percentage of individuals will tend to attempt to find a way to use that to create an advantage for themselves.”
Has any one seen my other brotha’s today? I seen Juan earlier. I am looking for them.
Gyges:
Ok I concede that point. But will you concede that government mostly ends up either in squashing individual rights or in a paternalistic tyranny?
