Constance McMillen, an 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student, asked officials at Constance McMillen, an 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student, asked officials at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton if she could attend her class prom with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo. The response of the school was to cancel the entire prom to avoid her attending as a lesbian.
The cancellation had the effect (perhaps intended) to make McMillen the target of blame for destroying the long planned prom. What is striking is that these are now adults who will be shortly released into a world filled with both homosexuals and heterosexuals. Yet, the school opted to cancel a prom to avoid these adults seeing a gay couple on a date.
I have to assume that the officials knew that by canceling the event, blame would be directed at the lesbian student and the ACLU. I can only hope that the students are not so gullible or ignorant.
The school now faces a well-deserved lawsuit, here.

I read Ellen DeGeneres gave her a 30K scholarship.
Good on you, Ellen.
“Like parades, proms should be organized by private parties and not government”
Yeah, that works: “parents at McMillen’s school have now organized a private prom. And Constance isn’t invited. ”

Note: the school board did not cancel the prom because of what she wanted to wear – the school board itself does not even claim that. The prom was cancelled because they would rather punish everyone than allow two girls to attend the prom together.
But, so she wanted to wear a tux, so what? At my high school graduation, a (heterosexual) girl wore a tux and the sky did not fall. The world did not spontaneously combust. Nobody had to run to the bathroom to throw up. Nobody got the vapours and had to be hospitalized. I guess it must have been a miracle. Who knew we were in such moral/mortal danger? And it was the 1970s. It’s a wonder we survived.
Oh wait, I’m wrong. Gender based dress codes should be developed immediately and strictly enforced. We should consult Saudi Arabia, Dubai and the Taliban. I’m sure they have some great advice in that regard.
Heidi,
So the correct response to, “can I have an exemption from a rule” is, “No Prom for anyone”? If it were really a matter of the dress code the officials would have said “No, but you’re welcome to attend if you wear a dress.”
It seems to me that between the two positions “I want to wear what I want to wear” is much less imposing than “I want you to wear what I want you to wear.” If you don’t want your kids exposed to a girl in a tux (or a boy in a dress) don’t let them go to places where they could be exposed.
Heidi,
That is a good point regarding the tux. I certainly would not want to attend if a male with his partner wanted to wear a pink tu-tu whilst carrying a wand and a purse.
if this girl did not try to radically make a public statement of her sexual orientation nobody would be replying to the situation. Some of you obviously do not have all the facts to the story. The girl was allowed to attend the prom with her girlfriend until they also wanted to wear a tux violating dress code. This girl was the first to impose her beliefs on others. If a straight male wanted to wear a prom dress that would not be tolerated so why should the school bend the rules for her. Everyone wants to say EQUAL TREATMENT, well that would not be equal at all to change rules. I stand beside schools that have rules about dress codes. I would not want my child exposed to cross dressing nor other dress code violations such as risqué clothing. You have to draw the line somewhere or suffer the consequences.
Good job to the high school professionals who have the wisdom not to put up with nonsense!
Rapid City, S.D. Police see valid marriage license – through the window of the house – while serving a warrant on the civilian member of the couple. They report said license to the military. It was a lesbian couple. The one in the military – the uncharged partner, Jene Newsome, got discharged.

I hope she ends up owning the Rapid City PD. Such as they are.
SM,
They also have loose control of their senses and other things.
While I wuz ‘borned’ in Texas, I high-tailed it out of Dodge–actually out of Laredo, and then Saginaw TX–as soon as my parents moved. I tried to run away sooner but I always got caught and got a switchin’ from my mean ol’ stepfather…
Incidentally, throughout the Internet, many people get “loose” and “lose” confused–amongst many other common words.
Principle v. principal…to v. too……
oops lose control. I have been in Texas too long.
It is the Anglo republicans on the Texas State School Board that are creating all this havoc. Texas is also a majority minority state and getting more so everyday. Eventually the white republicans will loose control of the state.
Morning Mom.
Now that takes some real balls to try and do that. The Texas Historical Museum is named after some Mexican. Are they going to change that name too? It is due East South East out of the Senate Chambers….
It’s only the Texas Republicans that are so bad. They give everyone here a bad rap. Now the republicans on the State Board of Education have voted to exclude Hispanic names from the list of those that died in the Alamo.
See AY, all that admiration should make for a very pleasant day indeed
Well Thank You too Buddha….
And you’re okay by me too, AY. You are most appreciated.
I don’t even hold being a Texan against you. 😉
You’re welcome AY
TY too bdaman..
Well TY.
Ay, may I. Seems there has been a few tears on a couple of threads this mornin.
Yes they do…and now you have your first for the day 🙂
Even Texans need hugs…..
