Rep. Kevin Garn, Majority Leader of the Utah House of Representatives, has disclosed that he had a nude hot tub experience with a 15-year-old employee in 1985 and later paid Cheryl Maher $150,000 if she would keep quiet. He was running for Congress at the time.
When the incident occurred, Garn, a conservative family-value Repbulican, was married. He paid Cheryl Maher the money in 2002 to hush the matter up after she contacted media when he was running for Congress.
He had a lawyer draft a non-disclosure agreement. In his press conference with his wife, Garn said “I expect to suffer public humiliation and embarrassment. Some lessons are hard to learn. This is something I should’ve done back in 2002 but I was scared. I did not want to be publicly judged by one of my life’s [worst mistakes].”
At the time, Maher was a 15-year-old employee at Garn’s business Pegasus Records and KSG Enterprises. He insists that they did not have sex and stated:
I can unequivocally tell you there was no physical contact, there was no touching, there was no intercourse, there was none of those things. It simply did not occur. …I’m not trying to downplay what did occur but I want to make it very plain.

Although the sex was consensual, because he is at least 10 years older than the underage girl. It is unlawful sexual conduct for having had intercourse with an under aged girl. The TRUE age of consent for Utah is 18 to consent to sexual activity with a person of ANY age.
Sounds like he could be facing some serious charges.

Possibly less than none. Especially so in a situation where the man so obviously believes that he is completely entitled to do what he wants, when he wants, and to whom he wants and that all will be forgiven with an ” I’m sorry ” accompanied by a fallen tear. It certainly helps also to have his highly respected, martyr of a wife standing beside him on the podeum. I wonder how much that will cost him?

Actually in this scenerio, it is the 15 yo gorl who holds the wisdom…she walked away with 150K and the knowledge that there was probably more where that came from.

And of course there is the good judgement that 15 year old girl can keep a secret, paid or not. They are known for their discretion and never engage in gossip.

Garn, this really isn’t a hard lesson to learn, very simple in fact… adult men naked in hot tubs with 15 year old girls who are also naked is bad….very very bad !
