The Hump restaurant has closed after weeks of being embroiled in a scandal involving the sale of whale meat. The Los Angeles restaurant has declared that the closing is a “self-imposed punishment,” though it is doubtful that the restaurant could have survived the criminal prosecution and growing boycott.
I must confess to having no sympathy for the restaurant or its parent company, which has also promised to make contributions to whale preservation causes. This sudden environmentalist impulse came only after criminal charges of the restaurant and its sushi chef Kiyoshiro Yamamoto. The restaurant only had six tables and has been open for 12 years. Good riddance.
