Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) who helped engineer the slim margin of passage for the health care legislation is going to retire. The pro-life member became a lightening rod for opposition after securing an agreement from Obama to ban federal funding for abortions.
President Obama reportedly called to ask Stupak not to resign as did Speaker Nancy Pelosi. With the legislation still unpopular with a large percentage of votes, Democratic members appear to be trying to avoid the issue on the campaign trail. In Stupak’s case, he reportedly said that, while the vote was not the cause for his retirement, he said retaining his seat would require too much of an effort.
Stupak was embarrassed by another member screaming “baby killer” during his speech on the floor, here.

Wow. That was pretty good Buddha.
BIL, wow is right.

“…those who are so pleased with the charming the so-called “godly Sarah Palin” are really deceived… you are deceived ” by your lust of the eyes the lust of her flesh and the pride your life.” Her speech and behavior is so irrational because she is so self-centered and self-absorbed, and definitely seek self-aggrandizement You don’t think…you just lust after her beauty.”
I think you’re talking to the wrong people. I doubt you’ll find too many Caribou Barbie fans here – in fact, most would likely agree she is self absorbed. I also doubt too many people here lust after her. But it sounds to me like lusting after her is something you may be quite familiar with.
One lives to be of sometime thunderous service.
Buddha,
Well said 🙂
Buddha,
Wow. I’m speechless.
Ooooo. Touched a nerve did I, Fundie?
I believe in a lot of things, but the thing I believe in most are logic and systematic study of the wondrous machinery of nature. I believe that some men misuse the works of great teachers. I believe that if there is a God, that He is not some simplistic white bearded judgmental man who behaves like a maladaptive child with an ant farm who tells all His little insect minions that he has infinite compassion as he burns them with a magnifying glass and shakes the frame of the farm. I believe if there is a God, then He is twofold. I believe He is a disinterested prime mover in the Aristotelian sense. I believe He said, “!” and everything happened. I believe Oh, I don’t know, kinda like a big bang or something. But I also believe that God is in all sentient beings too and this works if you take it literally (unlike the contradictory Bible) or conceptually. I believe Jesus knew this when He said God is Love and instructed men to look for His Father, who hey! just happens to be Love, within your own heart first. I believe that any “Christian” practice that does not reflect this simple truth is a distortion used by men to control other men . . . along with quaint concepts like Hell. Buddha knew this simple truth too when he taught people to seek to make the world a better place by first searching for the loving and compassionate within themselves. Great wisdom is wisdom no matter the source. In this sense, God is all of us and our potential for greater love of all creation. I believe fundamentalism focusing on the works of St. John are a form of death cult. I believe they are ready to meet Jesus and willing to kill the world to do it! I believe they are the exact kind of consequence those who argued against including the Apocrypha were afraid of when the very human decision was made to include the fire and brimstone fairy tale as they were editorially selecting what would become the New Testament from the myriad gospels to choice from. I believe they thought of it as being contrary to the core teachings of Jesus. I believe this because history tells me so. I believe it is illogical that if God is Love that God is also Fear. I believe Love is freedom. I believe Fear is repression. And I believe this is evidence in how Fundies insist on splitting the world in two – divide, not unite. Based on a book that until recently every Christian tradition had treated as a book of parables and not God’s Personal Steno Pad. I believe that a God by definition is beyond any human beings comprehension much less understanding and that any human trying to tell me they know what God wants me to do either wants to tell me what to do and/or take my money. I believe you live a life of fear and you spread it like an illness. I believe you teach exclusion. I believe you distort the good in human nature into a perverted mirror opposite of true love and compassion.
Just like Islamic or any other flavor of zealot will do.
Tell it to God on Judgment Day? I can walk outside and tell Him in the back yard right now if I want. I’m pretty sure He’s listening right now. Or I could look in my heart and ask if Love is coming to kill me because I don’t do what you say I should and usher in an Age of Fear for all mankind. And I just did that and the nature of Love within in me said, “That’s bullshit. All is one. It’s all gonna work out.”
But if I’m in Hell, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: He who tells me I’m going to Hell is usually holding the door trying to delay his own entry. Come on in! I believe I’ll save you a seat.
And now I believe I’m done mocking you.
Since you asked what I believe.
I believe this is hardly a comprehensive list Rev. I believe I believe a lot.
But I know a lot more that has proof, both logical and empirical. And I believe living a life of fearing one’s god is a sad empty existence that misses the true wonder around you – a complexity beyond measure, an infinite dance of energy and matter.
And if any of this offends you, Rev.
Forgive me.
Or not.
Tell that to God at Judgement Day. Your opinion is of little consequence when it comes to a literal heaven or hell that you will eventually go to because of your ignorance. The fool has said in his heart, there is no God. If this is your position,
then so let it be. I guess you are your own god…self sufficient one. Also, who are you to tell me what I should believe. You have a position on life, state it. Don’t try to tear down my position. I believe in a Holy God and the Holy Bible, literally. That is my position, that is my belief. Who do you believe in…yourself?
Mespo:
Doesnt Sam Harris say there is an objective morality?
Rev. Wicker:
“Isn’t that what Adam in the Garden of Eve did, lusted after Eve and plunged everybody in sin.”
***************
Those of us advocating HCR certainly appreciate your support, but …
and One more time:
1. There was no one named “Adam,” nor anyone named “Eve” in any primordial garden populated by God, a fruit tree, and a talking snake.
2. There are plenty of good reasons to support a courageous act without resorting to bad reasons which are silly and inknowable as truth like a deity being “pleased with his courageous stand to vote yes for the health bill for millions of unfortunate people to receive needed medical help.” Why not say you and I and everyone who values human life are pleased. Adding the deity gives it no more credence, since you cannot possibly “know” what pleases a mythical figure.
3. “Sin” is what we define it to be in each society, and no one plunged everybody into anything.
Please, tell us how your often contradictory and editorially constructed fairy tale should dictate the lives of all and how you have the corner on truth, Rev. All in defense of men controlling the reproductive rights of women.
It’s all kinda funny. Unless you’re one of those guys who can get pregnant. In which case it’s just hilarious.
If you live near an airport, a theocratic state run by a book of religion like you desire can be yours.
Ask the ticket agent for “Saudi Arabia”.
What do you know about serving two masters. I doubt very seriously you know what the Bible states. It appears to me that the the GOP so called Christians and the teabaggers, specifically the “charming and deceitful” Sarah Palin are serving two masters…God and money. Also, those who are so pleased with the charming the so-called “godly Sarah Palin” are really deceived… you are deceived ” by your lust of the eyes the lust of her flesh and the pride your life.” Her speech and behavior is so irrational because she is so self-centered and self-absorbed, and definitely seek self-aggrandizement You don’t think…you just lust after her beauty.
Isn’t that what Adam in the Garden of Eve did, lusted after Eve and plunged everybody in sin. The blind lead the blind, you all fall in the ditch. Check it out. Read and study the Bible. I dare you! The love of money is the root of all evil.
I find myself conflicted about this – as a very liberal atheist my attitude is basically ‘good riddance’, but as a pragmatic Michigan native I know that he will most likely be replaced by a candidate that the teabaggers will swoon over…
“He watered down the healthcare bill … serving two masters is tricky business.”
Amen!
Rev. Dr. AW Wicker
I don’t think he should retire because of the pressure of
stupid people. I don’t know if he has been threatened with great bodily harm by his enemies as the Speaker of the House and other brave men and women in Congress were; however, I know God is pleased with his courageous stand to vote yes for the health bill for millions of unfortunate people to receive needed medical help. God Bless him, his family, and his team. No weapon formed against them will prosper. God and others will never forget his kindness and compassion.

Question on FoxNews a few minutes ago – does he get to keep his health care!
He found out that there was a backroom deal that subverted what got him to change his no vote to yes.
Seeya, Janus.
The UP or Upper Peninsula is a lot like West Texas in it philosophy. Oh and a hell of a lot of MINES that FORD Motor Company owns. I can see Bart’s problems.
