The Osprey Has Landed . . . and the Public Has Been Hospitalized

The Memorial Day demonstration by the Marines of its MV-22 Osprey did not work out quite as they expected when it brought down a tree and large branches on top of onlookers — injuring 10.

The landing was part of
New York City’s annual Fleet Week Exhibition in Staten Island. The tilt-rotor aircraft was enough to tear off large limbs from trees and send debris flying into the crowd.

The aircraft has had a star-crossed history of delays and deaths in development, here and here.

This could make for a pretty strong torts case given the foreseeability of the flying debris. The question is the proper party to sue: the city or the military or both (the latter being the most likely).

  1. Real shame. I love this craft. It’s a great attempt to break out of the box but it can’t seem to catch a break… (no pun intended).

  2. They showed this on the news last night,as the troops were deploying for this excersise they were going one way while the medics and police were going another trying to help the injured.

I saw that clip too. It is fortunate there there were fire and emergency and civilians on the other side of the field why immediaely began running to the help the people under the trees. The marines ran away.

  3. I guess the marines never heard of rotor wash, and allow sailors to stand on deck directly beneath landing and launching planes to get blown into the sea.

There are sound reasons in physics that people and objects are cleared from the immediate area of the jet intakes and vents and standing in line either with the area in front of or behind rotors.

  4. Whoever organized this should have had people out of the way of a clear path in for the aircraft.

Apparently they don’t realize its like a small tornado with prop wash coming down from a craft like this.

  5. OMG, this is just plain awful. But is this truly a government function?
