Apocalyptic Politics Debuts on Fox

In this clip, former Governor and Fox News anchor Mike Huckabee has a matter-of-fact conversation with Moral Majority co-founder Tim LaHaye on whether “we are living in the end times.” LaHaye explains that Obama is pushing us “closer to the apocalypse”

It is the advent of apocalyptic politics — a movement that threatens to eventually devour itself. This casual conversation about the end of times masks a deeper psychosis where leaders seek to harness unhinged religious fervor for political purposes. This type of segment is no longer a bizarre comedy or distraction, but a truly frightening trend in both news and politics.

    Maybe this latest phenomena is the Fourth Awakening.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Awakening

    Our country has been enmeshed with religion from the first Puritan, Catholic, Quaker, and Anglican settlements through Mormonism, Abolition, Prohibition, Father Coughlin, and now Charismatics.

    Hopefully this latest phase, which seems the most virulent – maybe because we’re in it, will run it’s course faster than all the others have done.

  2. can’t we just let the South secede so that these people can destroy a small number of states that drain tax dollars, anyway, and demostrate the basic studpidity of their ideas?

  3. Blouise,

    They save that for the weekend I am sure. They want quality time.

    So who the hell is that TraderB?

    This may scare you even more.

    Cable News Ratings July 2010: Fox News Dominates, MSNBC Tops CNN

    ==============================================================

    Fox News is tabloid news … it’s the old right-wing America … Karl Rove, Dick Morris, Newt Gingrich, Laura Ingraham, etc. are on almost every night in order to get ratings from the old right-wing viewers … that is the targeted demographic. On any given Sunday, every other cable news morning shows beats Fox … Fox is in the basement due to all their old right-wing viewers attending church …

    … and they lose a ton of viewers every Monday to WWE Monday Night Raw wrestling … which is the highest rated cable show beating the combined numbers of all cable news shows … fake news loses out to fake sport … Ain’t America great?!

  5. Blouise,

    I thought it was you can put lipstick on a pig but its still a pig.

    But I guess you are right, if they can’t dress em up how are they going to be able to tell the difference between them and kin folk. So you may have a valid point.

    “Traditionally, the fundies were “not of this world,” and eschewed any connection with the mundane political system preferring to await their reward in Heaven.”

    ==================================================================

    Obviously the conservatives have convinced the fundies that the Republican Party is heaven on earth. You can dress up a pig but it’s still a pig.

    “Traditionally, the fundies were “not of this world,” and eschewed any connection with the mundane political system preferring to await their reward in Heaven.”
    ————————-

    the above observation, I think, is also the root of fundamentalist hypocrasy. Fundies are breaking all of their own rules, having their cake and eating it too makes them so difficult to believe by rational people who actually look at the truth of what they say and what they do….

  8. Mike A, Mespo, Would that be a reality series? I would like to know the rule first, does the loser or winner have to kiss the behind?

    These people are truly amazing…but then again, Hitler had his charm…I am a Clinton fan and so did he….

  9. mespo, I just saw your post. Maybe we need to collaborate like LaHaye and Jenkins. We could call it the “Kiss My Behind” series.

  10. Jerry Falwell predicted the return of Jesus by the end of 2009. Tim LaHaye’s nonsense is not theology. He and others of similar beliefs have merged conservative evangelicalism with right-wing political ideology to produce a bastard child I choose to call evangelical capitalism. Its adherents are the Christian version of the Taliban.

  11. The unholy alliance of fundamentalist Christians with right wing politics is a new phenomena in American history. Traditionally, the fundies were “not of this world,” and eschewed any connection with the mundane political system preferring to await their reward in Heaven. Reverends Falwell and Robertson changed all that. Sensing power that comes from leading a mass movement these rogues preached divine acceptance of infusing politics with religious tenets. The myth that we are a “Christian Nation,” under siege from secularists was the first step in coaxing the followers from their pews and converting them into voters and political activists for Jesus. It is an insidious problem, but one that was predictable given the guile of the fundie leadership and the credulity of its followers.

  12. Out of everything that Faux and friends puts out, this is the one thing that truly scares me. These people feel that they have nothing to lose, as opposed to atheists like myself, who have everything to lose.

  13. This is exactly what Glenn Beck is doing on his TV program and even more on his radio program.

    He appeals to “fellow Christians” (and God) and asks his godly viewers to “put on their boots”. He keeps saying they should be non-violent, but in self-defense work against the current government in any way they can. Psychotic, indeed.

  14. Man, everybody should vote Democratic this fall and tell your friends and family to do it too. Whatever faults the Democrats may have at least they don’t play *this* game.

  15. I agree with everything in this comment.

    This is why the Separation of Church and State must be maintained at all costs. The world is a dangerous enough place for a secular government without adding death worshiping nonsense to the mix.

  16. If Obama is pushing us closer to the Apocalypse, why aren’t LeHaye and Co. delighted? Doesn’t that mean Jesus will be returning soon, and all the evil people will fall into The Pit?
    Or maybe LaHaye doesn’t really believe all that nonsense that religious fanatics have been spouting for 2000 yrs.
