Turkish Groom Fires Gun Into Air At Wedding and Mows Down Wedding Party

While a kebab shop owner is claiming to beat and strangle his wife as part of a local dance, a groom in Turkey shoot eight of his wedding guests as part of his celebration. His father and two aunts later died.

Firing guns into the air is one of the most common and stupid practices in the Middle East during celebrations. In this case, the groom grabbed an AK-47 and fired off some shots. He says that he lost control of the gun and mowed down eight of his wedding party in the village of Akcagoze in Turkey’s southeastern province of Gaziantep.

If you line up all of the bad wedding stories, this would have to top the list.

  1. Kay,

That post was not very nice. I do want to know more about your 5 months at the USMC detention unit for civilians.

  2. Blouise,

That is why the Gods let the Irish invent Whiskey….so they couldn’t rule the world….8:)

  3. frankdawg,

After reading your post perhaps I may suggest that you were part of the american dream that is seldom discussed. 8) (shades relate to your bruises)

It calls to mind the frustration Washington had with the Scots/Irish on the “western” borders who often took time off from helping to fight in the Revolution in order to fight amongst themselves over issues that came along as baggage from the old country.

  4. @ Blouise
It was sometimes fun for me as a cynical observer of human stupidity. But it was also sometimes dangerous as you never knew when a fight might erupt – thank Noodles guns were not popular or as available then.

It was educational as I got an good look at regional and religious hate that did not directly affect me. I grew up in a Catholic neighborhood & used to get my ass kicked because I was not Catholic. It was interesting to see that sort of stupidity played out by two sides against each other when I was not part of either side.

  5. tomdarch,

They already have it and it is called Opening Day of Deer Season…..many of a miscreant relative has met his maker that day…..

  6. I heard that Sharon Angle has proposed this “Second Amendment type remedy” for problems with the in-laws.

I am reminded of a scene from Python where Lancelot sleighs the wedding guests by mistake. Sorry, a bit marose.

I grew up between a small Turkish immigrant community and a small Greek immigrant community. Interesting dynamic! The best part to me was attending dances at the local teen center, the room was essentially divided into 3 groups: Turkish kids, Greek kids & the German/Scandinavian mixed bag. It was like living in “West Side Story” for a couple of years.

Kids being kids & love being love it didn’t take long for some of those barriers to break down. I don’t know if there were any ‘honor killings’ but I do know kids in both camps that were beaten, locked in their rooms and/or shipped away by parents unhappy with their dating choices.

Was it as much fun as it sounds? Part of the culture that is America. No wonder we confound our enemies.

  11. frankdawg,

The Sct has held that the US Constitution has no applicability outside of the US…Ask, Manuel Noriega…..as soon as Bush got through with him in the zone he was arrested….seems like entrapment to me. He was just doing what he was set up to do….

So no, 2nd amendment rights outside of the US.

  12. Too bad they don’t have a second amendment in Turkey. I’m sure some librule wacko will soon suggest it is a bad idea to start randomly firing a gun and demand some awful, over-reaching law that will curtail decent Turks, like this guy, from expressing their joy with firearms & thereby open the door for a totalitarian government to crush his freedom.

  13. Rich,

And you have a problem with the Texas/Georgia Celebrations? Well sir they celebrate New Years and any other day of year in…say.. Detroit….Cleveland…Matamoros, Mexico….so whats the problem…

This is sad….especially if you liked that relative….but then again…go to a Greek Wedding and see what happens if the families don’t like each other….

  14. I would have expected this to be more of a Texas-style wedding problem. Or perhaps Georgia (our’s not the one near Russia)–guns are big on New years there. I was patching my roof and found old bullets.
