Lies Like a Rug: New Obama Rug Has Historical Quote Wrong

It appears that the Obama White House is intent on sweeping history literally under the rug after the new presidential rug was found to have a historical quote wrong. The quote attributed to Martin Luther King was actually the words of abolitionist Theodore Parker who will now have his misattributed words walked over by every visitor to the Oval Office.

The quote is “[t]he arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” King, however, was not the source of these inspiring words. They were the work of a Boston abolitionist and Unitarian minister. Parker was an incredible writer and a tireless advocate for the end of slavery. He never lived to see it. He died at age 49 in 1860 — shortly before the Civil War.

King never claimed to be the author of the words and gave credit to Parker.

The original quote from 1853 was

“I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice.”

Theodore Parker, “Of Justice and Conscience,” in Ten Sermons of Religion, (Boston: Crosby, Nichols, & Company,1853).

In the end, he would likely take the slight in good fashion. After all, he told people “[n]ever violate the sacredness of your individual self-respect.” Amen, Brother.

  1. “the degenerates on the left”~Tootie

good grief Tootie…degeneration is an equal opportunity employer…

“In your view only the government should produce food, clothing, shelter, necessities, and services. That is crazy.”~Tootie

the craziest part of that statement is that it is YOURS with a sleezy attempt to put my authorship to it.
    Don’t do it again.

  2. They are just practicing like all good athletes, the must stay revved up to keep pumping…..

  3. We all know there are no sexual degenerates in the Republican party. They–John Ensign and Mark Sanford and the rest of the fellows in the following video–are always around to uphold family values.

  4. Tootie: “They (Democrats) want people who are afraid of poverty. This is why they are making people poor.” This may be the single most astonishing thing I have ever read. I am still trying to get my head around the incessant claims I see on the posts following Yahoo! News stories that Black people are the racists in America and White people are the victims. War is Peace! Love is Hate! It’s all coming true! Put on your tinfoil hats and run for the hills!

  5. Woosty:

The only people stealing my money is government. Everyone else I give to willingly and by choice. If people steal, there are plenty of laws to punish them (lawyers have made sure of this). On the other hand government is rarely ever punished.

In your view only the government should produce food, clothing, shelter, necessities, and services. That is crazy. It can never work because government wields the sword. The same people who arrest you cannot be the same people who feed you. That is how mass starvation occurs. Ask Stalin.

  6. Ginger: Oh, one more thought. Government was the most murderous entity last century. Businessmen were not.

Our founders and framers didn’t trust government. That is why they had checks and balances. They are there not because I’m bad or because businessmen are bad. They are there because government is bad.

My government has snuffed out the lives of 48 million innocent human organisms in the womb. I’d be insane to trust a government willing to do that.

My government murdered 600,000 Americans in a civil war. I’d be insane to trust a government like that. My government lies and murders foreigners overseas. It did so all last century. My president can have Americans assassinated and imprisoned without a trial. My government runs jails were citizens are brutally tortured, beaten, raped, and murdered. My government steals peoples money and punishes citizens for mistakes they make on tax forms. My government tramples the Constitution but harasses me everywhere I go with camera’s, surveillance, cops, and taxes.

When my government stops murdering people here and abroad and actually earns my trust, then I might believe you that government can keep me safe.

  7. Ginger: When I said more healthy and prosperous, I meant in comparison to Americans from other centuries: they died very young. And we live to a very old age now on average (despite our modern economic woes). And our standard of living has to do with that long life.

According to history, our current economic woes have as much to do with the corruption of culture as it does with anything else. I realize that the degenerates in the Democratic Party hate to hear this sort of thing, but the 60s mark the height of the “sexual” revolution and the fallout is still with us today. According to history (Unwin, Toynbee, Sorokin), no civilization which is sexually corrupt fairs well.

Large scale sexual corruption of civilization is a constant feature in the last chapter of all great civilizations which decline or fall. This is a proven fact. It is strange how the degenerates on the left think sexual liberation is a modern concept and therefore sophisticated. It isn’t. It’s old. It’s old and it ends in ruin. It is an inescapable fact. And our current slide and decline is exactly what should be expected after generations of sexual corruption. Much of Western Civilization is on the decline because of this particular moral corruption.

According to J.D Unwin (who studied about 80 major and minor civilizations)it always happens this way. He was an anthropologist at Cambridge who thought Sigmund Freud was correct that sexual repression caused social (and personal) pathology. And he believed this explained mental disease, crime, or even war.

Unwin’s survey indicated just the opposite. He concluded that civilization prospered and expanded only when men and women kept their sexual activities to marriage and monogamy. I think he has a point and it makes sense. And it appears to be true in our country.

I have struggled financially all of my adult life. So I am completely aware of what it means to live through this and I don’t need anyone to tell me the obvious or point out the suffering.

What I would like people to talk about is sticking to the Constitution so that the crooks in government would stop stealing money and calling it taxation. Democrats want to be thieves. This isn’t good.

And I would like for government to stop being totalitarians and calling it regulation to protect me. I’m not stupid and I don’t need a degenerate thief to tell me what to do and how to protect myself. If they cared for me they would let me make my own decisions. Since they refuse to do that, I can only conclude they are evil doers who seek power only to enrich themselves and their families while stomping on my neck. They promise to take care of people with other peoples’ money only so they will vote for them. This is criminal behavior. It is depraved and evil.

Even if people don’t like it that corporate folks are rich there is no reason to punish ME for what corporate people do by enslaving me to the state. Only the most evil people would do this.

I want to live free, even if I am dirt poor. Democrats hate this because they want people who will agree to be enslaved by their bribes/handouts. They want people who are afraid of poverty. This is why they are making people poor. The poorer Americans are the riper they are for the complete abolition of the Constitution and the rise of the Marxist state and globalism.

    Their scheme is working.

  8. “I am no longer secure in my house, ,and effects and you support that. I am forced at gunpoint to surrender my most private papers over to brutal and evil government thugs who give me no choice but to leave my country to avoid them. No corporation on earth forces this on me.”
    ————————————-
Tootie, a robber that picks your pocket from behind when you are not looking is not ‘less evil’ than 1 that robs you at gunpoint in the light of day…

and whilst I know that I’m not their biggest fan…Corporations are not ‘inherently’ evil…anymore than Governments are. They are however currently waaaaaaaay out of balance having lost their nut as well as their scruples.

  9. moral turpitude; A phrase used in Criminal Law to describe conduct that is considered contrary to community standards of justice, honesty, or good morals.

Crimes involving moral turpitude have an inherent quality of baseness, vileness, or depravity with respect to a person’s duty to another or to society in general. Examples include rape, forgery, Robbery, and solicitation by prostitutes.

  10. Swarthmore mom,

One of my biggest failings, and why I could never be a successful political operative, is my tendency to underestimate the opposition. Taft and his group of cronies stole the state blind. We are finally getting back on our feet and the teabaggers want to screw it all up again over ridiculous things like immigration, muslims, etc. I keep thinking, “people can’t be that stupid to still be fooled into voting against their own best interests” which is why I’d fail at any real role in the DNC. Republicans in this state are exactly that stupid, year after year after year. They will never change which is why the democrats need to roll out the numbers.

Republicans are used to having nothing and don’t worry about it … but democrats want an education, want a fair wage, and expect decent healthcare … democrats don’t want to live like republicans.

  11. Gingerbaker,

It’s a dangerous tactic to confuse Tootie with anything factual.

It could cause her to have one of her tea bagger fits and she’ll start spewing theocratic homophobic nonsense again.

  12. Tootie:

“Americans … are … more prosperous than ever before”

Demonstrably untrue. Highpoint of prosperity was mid 60’s, and it has been downhill ever since. Curiously, mid 60’s was also highpoint of union membership. It was also the time when many newspapers had “Labor” sections, not just “Business” sections.

If we want a prosperous middle class again, government has to make it happen for everyone, not just the elite 1% whose wealth comes from manipulating the system through corporate lobbyists.

Tootie, you may not vote Republican, but you sure think like one. Government (and unions) are the only friends that the middle class have – government is not the enemy. A manipulated government, on the other hand, IS the enemy.

  13. Dredd,

I’m so happy to hear that our children is learnin’. One should never misunderestimate the youth of this country.

    🙂

  14. Tootie Corporations actually want the government involved in health care. They don’t want to have to provide benefits. With only three major health care insurers left, the premiums are so high that they want out.

  15. Swarthmore mom,

I’m not a Republican but I once was. Most of my family are. I wish they weren’t. My household has zero Reps or Dems.

Americans live longer than ever before, which means they are healthy and more prosperous than ever before. If corporations were as evil as alleged, this could not be happening. You seem to feel that big corporations are bigger villains than big government and nothing the last century taught us indicates this is true. It was government that murdered nearly a 100 million unarmed citizens last century: not corporations.

Corporations become involved only when government forces themselves on them like it is now doing with medical care.

I don’t have to associate with a corporation. I don’t have to work for one, and for the most part can avoid them if I really wish to. I cannot avoid the feds, they are now even forcing me to hand over my private intimate medical records.

I am no longer secure in my house, ,and effects and you support that. I am forced at gunpoint to surrender my most private papers over to brutal and evil government thugs who give me no choice but to leave my country to avoid them. No corporation on earth forces this on me.

So who is the enemy of liberty and freedom? Is it those who want the government out of their private affairs (Republicans) or those who invite them in (Democrats)?

Choose which side you want to be on. It will be the most important choice in your political life.

  16. Blouise It looks like the republicans are going to take back Ohio. I am not opposed to a third party but there isn’t a viable one with viable candidates. I saw a poll that showed only 25% of african americans are interested in this election. I dont think that will change much between now and the election. The tea party republicans are highly motivated. They want to rollback the health care plan. The view it as communist plan. They don’t view the large corporations as villains. They view immigrants, muslims, mexicans, and those who are dependent on the government as the culprits.
