Meet Christine O’Donnell: Tea Party Candidate For Delaware’s Next Senator

If you have not previously encountered Christine O’Donnell (who is running for the Republican nomination in Delaware), she is becoming the new face of the Tea Party and what some hope is the new Republican party. One issue that makes her stand out is her rather expansive definition of what constitutes adultery.

She is running against Rep. Mike Castle, a former governor. However, she seems more inclined to debate subjects like masturbation than most politicians, including her position that masturbation is an act of adultery. This could make for an interesting debate.

O’Donnell told an MTV interviewer in 1998 that masturbation is the same as adultery because “the Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery. So you can’t masturbate without lust.” She has also written that “[w]hen a married person uses pornography, or is unfaithful, it compromises not just his (or her) purity, but also compromises the spouse’s purity.”

You have to admit this makes for a much more interesting debate than the usual fare of debating tax rates and federal jurisdiction.

  1. It would seem more likely, given Christine herself, that the government experiment produced humans with fully functioning mouse braines.

  2. Buddha,

I posted this earlier on the Paladino thread:

    From Think Progress
The Old Adventures Of New Christine
    http://thinkprogress.org/christine-odonnell-record/

Here are some of the best Christine O’Donnell comments:

O’Donnell warned about mice with ‘fully functioning human brains.’ “Now we’re using this to start cloning humans. … They are — they are doing that here in the United States. American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains.’ [O’Reilly Factor, 10/16/07]

O’Donnell is so fervently pro-truth that she wouldn’t lie to Nazis looking for Jews in her home. Appearing on Political Incorrect with Bill Maher, O’Donnell explained the
importance of truth-telling, refusing to even entertain the notion of lying when a guest asked if she would tell the truth to Nazis looking for Jews hiding in her home. “I believe if I were in that situation, God would provide a way to do the right thing righteously. I believe that! … You never have to practice deception” [ThinkProgress, 9/15/10]

O’Donnell called the Supreme Court a ‘constitutional monarchy.’ “It’s kind of like we have the nine people sitting there in Washington who have a constitutional monarchy and that is an abuse of the system but that’s the way that they push their agenda. And, if you’ll also notice, with all of these cases it’s a few people, a few people who oppose the masses.” [Savage Nation, 5/24/03]

O’Donnell explained why there were never WMD found in Iraq by comparing the war to raiding a ‘crack house.’ “One of the biggest lies that’s going on is that we had no reason to go in. … If we were going to invade a crack house, and we said, ‘We’re going to invade this crack house. We’re going to raid this crack house.’ For six months, we gave them warning. And then you walk in and you go, ‘Hey, there’s no crack. There’s only these little pipes. Now, there’s no crack with the little pipes, so we can’t assume that these pipes are used for crack.’” [Hardball, 6/20/03]

O’Donnell believes that spouses who have been cheated on possess compromised ‘purity.’ O’Donnell wrote in an article published in Cultural Dissident, “When a married person uses pornography, or is unfaithful, it compromises not just his (or her) purity, but also compromises the spouse’s purity.” [TPM, 9/7/10]
O’Donnell believes the proper role of a woman is to ’submit’ to her husband. ”This is not about merely a Baptist doctrine. This is a biblical doctrine. And the passage from the Bible the Baptist article is taken from talks about a submissive family. And yet, what the media seems to be reacting to is the word “submit” in the wives. But yet, even in, Mary, your introduction, you ignored or you left out where it says they graciously submit to a servant leader. And that is God’s design for the family. It is not about dominating and it is not about being a slave to your husband.” [CNN, 6/11/98]

O’Donnell wants her children to ’see Christ’ in her future husband. Explaining what she is looking for an ideal husband, O’Donnell said, “I want my children to see Christ in him.” [Wilmington News-Journal, 11/12/06]

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT LAST ONE, CHRISTINE!

  3. Buddha,

All better. I want to concentrate on my reply to lottakatz about fractals anyway.

    Bob,

    Nice ‘Johnny Dangerously’ reference. 😉

  4. Troll,

I didn’t say she did. I said it showed how flawed her reasoning is in re morals and her statement on how you can supposedly legislate morality. You know, flawed reasoning, like the kind you show in abundance.

    Now I’m outta here.

  5. Slarti,

I didn’t say it was but upon re-reading I can see where you may have gotten that impression. I should have been more clear. Her comments while not per se a violation show a willingness to violate the Constitution based on her ideas of legislating “morality” based in her Christian fundamentalism. And then I showed why such laws would be a violation.

    Better?

(Got to run, I’m racing the clock for one of the stops I have to make. bbl)

  6. Buddha,

I agree that she almost certainly believes in (and if elected will try to implement) legislating morality, I just don’t think that the quote you posted (which paints a clear picture of her Biblical illiteracy) is direct evidence of it (and hence it is not in violation of the 1st amendment).

  7. Troll,

It’s more complicated than “national religion”.

You can’t make laws that promote religious doctrines from any religion.

    You are a simple creature.
