Edwin Fry, 73, is quite the dog lover. When his pet poodle, aptly named “Buddy Tough,” was nabbed by local police for running “at large,” Fry decided to pull his best Steve McQueen. Refusing to pay the enhanced fine of $100.00 due to Buddy’s repeat offense, Fry leaped aboard his riding mower and headed straight for the canine hoosegaw where the chain link was no match for the bolt-cutter wielding pet owner. Sadly, the police took a dim view of animal rescue– Fry-style– and arrested him on complaints of second-degree burglary, trespassing, and destruction of city property. He is also facing a misdemeanor charge for (insert drum roll)…. allowing an animal to run at large. Sadder still, Fry got his own pen and Buddy was euthanized.
On a happier note, this “Born Free” attitude is not limited to our shores. Australians love it too as we see here.

And you probably thought when the kids were gone… 🙂
My 14 year old dog came down with pneumonia yesterday. Now I have a spayed puppy that I have to keep quiet and an old dog that won’t eat.
I wonder if Mr. Fry is interested in running for public office. We need that kind of can-do attitude and the optimism which can be assumed from his naming that particular dog – “Buddy Tough”.
Sorry to hear Buddy was euthanized. That seems harsh.
Yes, that is harsh Elaine.
It sounds from the article as if Mr. Fry refused to pay the fine but times are tough for a lot of people and $100. is hard to come by for many. I hope Mr. Fry was just cantankerous and didn’t have to trade off considerations for his electric bill for his dogs bail.

The world has gone mad!
This is a disturbing story. We all know just how much a dog/pet means to an old person who needs companionship.
However, at his age Mr Fry should have remembered this wise old proverb:
“Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish”
I can’t believe that they put Buddy Tough down, for what appears to be a crime his owner committed. There should be some serious outrage on how this was handled. If that is a picture of Buddy Tough, I would have taken him in a second. I rescued a white poodle that looks just like that name Okie. One of the best dogs I have ever had.
Buddy Tough was euthanized because he was found off his leash twice? That’s so sad. Talk about a harsh punishment!
