A Bachmann Concerto

Step into my time machine. I’ll take you back to March of 2009 when Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said the following:

“I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back. Thomas Jefferson told us, having a revolution every now and then is a good thing, and the people — we the people — are going to have to fight back hard if we’re not going to lose our country. And I think this has the potential of changing the dynamic of freedom forever in the United States.”

Now I’ll reset the time machine to October of 2008 when Bachmann told Chris Matthews in an interview that she’d like the media to investigate the “anti-American” activities of members of Congress. “I think people would love to see an exposé like that,” she claimed.

Come, let’s return to the present. This week, Ms. Bachmann announced that she plans to run for the chairmanship of the House Republican Conference—and that she wants to start a “Constitutional Conservative Caucus” to “stop any bill from passing” that she deems unconstitutional, such as “a stimulus or a government takeover of health care.”

Oh my aching head! I can only begin to imagine some of the bills this woman will consider to be unconstitutional. Anyone got some extra-strength Excedrin?

I’ll leave you with a poem I wrote about Bachmann back in March of 2009:

Michelle Bachman: Armed and Dangerous

By Elaine Magliaro

She’s wild-eyed and packin’ heat—

One congressgal who’s not so sweet.

She isn’t your typical Minnesotan.

She’s militant…warlike—and totin’

A derringer in her Gucci bag…

A Smith and Wesson—40 mag,

A semi-automatic Colt.

She thinks it’s time for an armed revolt.

She’s out inciting insurrection!

(How did this crank win re-election?????)

She says she’s ready for a revolution!

I say she’s ready for an institution—

An asylum for the politically inane

With padded cells. This gal’s insane!

She’s crazy. She’s possessed. She’s mad!

There’s one last thing I’ll like to add:

She needs a good psychiatrist—

Or, better still, an exorcist!

  1. Who was it who started a pre-emptive war in Iraq? Liberals?

Who started a preemptive war in Pakistan?

    In Yemen?

Are we ready to take on Iran? Or should a proxy start that?

The current administration is using wars to further government power both at home and abroad.

While these wars claim to protect our national security, their brutal implementation and widening reach create chaos and directly provoke terrorist actions against us. This is by design, as it guarantees a steady stream of motivated enemies, perpetual war in response, and continued growth in the power and scale of government to administer those wars.

All of our wars should be concluded immediately. The US empire should be wound down across the globe and the country returned to a Swiss-style non-interventionist foreign policy.

Absurd and petty partisanship is trumping discussions of the deaths of millions by our hand. History will judge us poorly… if we live to see it written.

  2. What the hell happened to the Republican party? They invented cap and trade – the government sets what is essentially a safety standard for the maximum amounts of greenhouse gasses (the “cap”) and then allows the free market to figure out how to profit from improvements in quality/price (the “trade”).

So, just a few years ago, Republicans were promoting their market-oriented approach to limiting production of greenhouse gasses, but today, they’re all freaked out about it. My problem isn’t with Bachmann and her fellow professional extremist wing-nuts, my problem is with the “rank and file” Republicans in DC. Why are they allowing themselves to be dragged off the right edge into the abyss.

My new future Senator, Mark Kirk earned a Master’s from the London School of Economics – basically the anti-U of Chicago. He’s exactly the kind of Republican who should trumpet Cap and Trade. We’ll see if he knuckles under.

  3. While only 32% of the teabaggers running actually made it into office, the next 2 years are going to be hilarious as we watch the Orange man deal with a whole bunch of totally inexperienced legislators (none have legislative experience and most have never held elected office) who now make up 25% of the Republican caucus.

  4. SwM,

BADAF (Bachmann’s Armed & Dangerous Army of Minnesotans)… the acronym should be BADAM but Bachmann’s militia likes to think of themselves as a Force … take your pick …

  5. SwM,

    Whew!

I wonder if BADAF militiamen/women go on maneuvers to neighboring districts … talk about citizen on citizen hatred … I also wonder if their leader has “earmarked” uniforms for them … something stylish and distinctive … with plumes on their helmets ..

I’m going to surround my house with a peace-table … just in case they break through …. better safe than sorry.

  6. Blouise: Bachman’s district is next to Keith Ellison’s district. He is a muslim and she will have to get through there before she can get to you. Great post by the way.

  7. I love a good didactic lecture … it’s so 18th century

I will sit back and absorb instructions as to what a liberal should be, how a liberal should speak of others, what wars, if any, a liberal may support, how to be a liberal and still be a peacemaker, how to be a liberal and refrain from being a peacemaker, but most importantly … how to fan or not fan, depending on the breeze, the flames of citizen on citizen hatred.

All while deciding whether or not to arm myself in case the Bachmann Armed & Dangerous Army of Minnesotans (BADAF)decide to cross state lines and invade Ohio.

  8. Jill,

“Yet, these same liberals refuse to sit at the table with their own enemy on the right.”

Is that so? Is that your reality? I think Obama bent over backward to make concessions to Republicans on a number of issues. As I see it, Republicans/Conservatives have been the ones who have refused to compromise. They evidently took Nancy Reagen’s “just say no” advice to heart.

Who’s been turning on fellow citizens? Have liberals been stomping on people’s heads, assaulting people who were protesting against their candidates, grabbing campaign signs away from fellow citizens?

    **********

“But where is your self analysis?”

I’m not sure how to respond to that question…considering the context in which you asked it.

BTW, here’s a question for you: Who was it who started a pre-emptive war in Iraq? Liberals?

  9. Jill: I also wonder why you get so offended when someone criticizes Palin or Bachman, but you consistently declare open season on all the democrats.

  10. Elaine,

I asked this question below and I will ask it of you again. I have been sickened by the breezy way so many here are ready to turn on their fellow citizens. Most liberals say that Israel and Palestine must have peace talks, despite atrocities that boggle the mind, atrocities on both sides but more so from the occupying power, Israel. Still, liberals expect the Israelis and Palestinians to know that peace is the only way and the only way to peace is to sit at the table with one’s enemy. Yet, these same liberals refuse to sit at the table with their own enemy on the right. Will problems everywhere else in the world be solved by sitting down with your enemy, but here in the US, liberals will not have the courage to be peacemakers–to do that which is hard, to sit down with your enemy for the sake of a common good? Instead, I see time after time that many people here are happy to engage in fanning the flames of citizen on citizen hatred. To what purpose are you aiming by these actions? Did you suppose peace and justice and a good society was an easy task?

I am not saying that you should not criticize or analyze the right wing, far from it. You should do this. But where is your self analysis? Is violence only a problem when it occurs intra-nationally or is it a problem when it occurs overseas as well? Because if the lives of others, foreign nationals, count, then the Democrats are implicated in violence that is so horrific, no thinking person would condone it.

Where do you go from here? How can you stop violence both at home and abroad? That is the work of a peacemaker.

  12. ““I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous …”

Be very careful Ms Bachmann for armed and dangerous people are unpredictable in that they often turn on their leaders …
