Mississippi Sons of Confederate Veterans Propose License Plate to Honor Civil War General Who Was Once a Member of the Ku Klux Klan

Submitted by Elaine Magliaro, Guest Blogger

The Mississippi Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans has come up with an idea for celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War—known to some as the “War between the States.” The veterans group has proposed that the state of Mississippi issue a series of specialty license plates commemorating the war. These specialty plates, planned for the years 2011 through 2015, would each have a different design.

What has some people upset is the specialty license plate slated for the year 2014, which would honor General Nathan Bedford Forrest.  Forrest, a native of Tennessee, is considered by some to have been a military genius. Others feel differently about Forrest who is “reviled” by some for allegedly having lead a massacre of Black Union troops at Fort Pillow in his home state in 1864. It should be noted that Forrest also served as the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

According to ABC News, the NAACP is planning to send a letter to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour requesting “that he publicly denounce the license plate and use his office to prevent it from being issued.” Derrick Jackson, president of the Mississippi state NAACP, said of Forrest: “He should be viewed in the same light that we view Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. The state of Mississippi should deny any vanity tags which would highlight racial hatred in this state.”

Although many historians agree that Nathan Bedford Forrest distanced himself from the KKK later in his life, some believe “it was too little too late because the Klan had already turned violent before Forrest left.”

  1. “the drumbeats of revolution get louder everyday …”

    ****************

Every sucessful social revolution is fought first as an intellectual battle and then, if necessary, as a physical one. The American revolution had Paine, Adams, Henry, et als. The French worked off the mental blueprint of Rousseau, Voltaire, and Turgot. In all other circumstances the eruption of revolutionary emotion is simply a tantrum with its unfocused energy exploding and disspating just as quickly. If this “revolution of the militias” is undergirded with the musings of brent, JosephineSouthern, and Confederate Soldier, the forces of the status quo have little to fear.

The interesting feature of brent’s lament is that he is right in some respects describing his revulsion at our burgeoning corporate oligarchy, but like a monkey with a M-16 his revolution is just as likely to shoot its own foot as that of his oppressors. brent could learn a lot if he would simply spend some time reading here instead of just reflexively defending his positions. He might learn that only the fool is certain and eventually come to realize that thinkers on both sides of the equation see the problem for what it has become.

  2. You could take all the militias in the entire country and they would not make a blip on a busy city street in someplace like Atlanta. Cause trouble, yes. Take over the country? Dream on.

The south lost the war a century and a half ago, and as Shelby Foote learned in his vast research, the Union did it with one hand tied behind their back. Huge resources of manpower and industry were never tapped. The US has the military that defeated Germany and Japan. Who do you think you are, Captain Marvel? Keep it up and you may find yourself at the wrong end of a Gatling gun or strapped on a gurney with a needle stuck in your arm like Timothy McVeigh.

    Anti-gun Nominee Defeated!
Goodwin Liu Nomination Fail in Senate

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate rejected President Obama’s pick for a seat on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. In a procedural motion that required 60 votes, Goodwin Liu’s nomination was defeated in a near-party line vote of 52-43.

Liu was perhaps the most radical of Obama’s judicial nominees. The UC Berkley law professor supported the notion that the language of the Constitution is sufficiently ambiguous to bend with the times.

“It becomes pretty clear why ‘originalism’ and ‘strict construction’ don’t make a lot of sense,” Liu said in an interview promoting his book. “The Framers deliberately chose… broad words so they would be adaptable to new challenges over time.”

In Liu’s view, the right to keep and bear arms may have been necessary in the 18th century, but no longer needed.

For these reasons, the Senate was flooded with emails from gun owners insisting that Liu be voted down.

While Liu’s defeat is a victory for Second Amendment supporters, it is also indicative that Obama is pursuing a course to pull the federal judiciary as far to the left as possible. GOA will continue to expose the disdain with which Obama’s nominees hold the Second Amendment.

You control our world. You’ve poisoned the air we breathe, contaminated the water we drink, and copyrighted the food we eat. We fight in your wars, die for your causes, and sacrifice our freedoms to protect you. You’ve liquidated our savings, destroyed our middle class, and used our tax dollars to bailout your unending greed. We are slaves to your corporations, zombies to your airwaves, servants to your decadence. You’ve stolen our elections, assassinated our leaders, and abolished our basic rights as human beings. You own our property, shipped away our jobs, and shredded our unions. You’ve profited off of disaster, destabilized our currencies, and raised our cost of living. You’ve monopolized our freedom, stripped away our education, and have almost extinguished our flame. We are hit… we are bleeding… but we ain’t got time to bleed. We will bring the giants to their knees and you will witness our revolution!

  9. Rafflaw

you may have something there. they did give them all those cotton bales to sleep on.

  10. Blouise, I think the Great Green One is referring to he who used a false analogy, red herring and strawman all in the same paragraph. In other words, Anonymous.

  11. Buddha,

He said “the only law” I’m not sure about how far back what war-crimes were codified.

On the other hand, I do know that there was a law against treason against the U.S. at the time.

    Anon,

It was breaking a law to educate the black children, it was breaking a law to rebel against the U.S. Breaking a law is breaking a law, even if breaking that law is the moral action to take.

    Words have meanings.

  12. Buddha,

I’m lost … trying to follow this thread is like trying to follow my new puppy … who’s a Nitwit?

  13. OOPS, the Green One is right. Libyan rebels, not Syrian. My bad.

  14. Anonymous, beside the point. It is clear the Syrians object to a rebel army. That is why the rebels need arms. Gyges said that no government will tolerate a rebel army.

If the CSA were to rise again, who would send them arms to take on the Marines, Air Force, Navy and Army. And Coast Guard. I don’t think the rebels can count on the French government this time.

About how many secessionists and separatists are there? Compared with the millions of people and corporations in the south who do NOT want to secede.

I recall that a few years ago a couple of yahoos were spotted walking along a road in west Texas. A team of investigators in a Blackhawk helicopter were looking for a fugitive. The team spotted the two guys and wanted to talk to them. As the helicopter went into a hover preparing to land, one of the yahoos opened fire on them with a shotgun. So they hosed both of the men down with their chain gun. So much for shooting at Army helicopters.

  15. Gyges,

The rebel issue aside, he ordered/allowed his troops to kill surrendered soldiers.

That is a war crime under any circumstance.
    _______

    Nitwit,

You might want to learn to read: Obama armed Libyan rebels, not Syrian. The President of Syria and some of his cabinet merely got sanctions for giving their own people the beat down, not arms shipments to rebels. If Obama had armed Syrian rebels? He’d have hardly come out today telling Israel they needed to go back to their 1967 borders. If you don’t understand the interrelationships of all the parties in a given region, the only thing that makes you look dumber than getting a fact wrong is getting a fact wrong that would have led to drastically different reactions within the region. Arming Syrian rebels would be an invitation for Syria to invade Israel, yokel. And unlike Libya, Syria has enough military and the proximity to do it. Don’t get me wrong: what Obama is doing in Libya is unconstitutional in many ways, but your lying just because you’re ignorant isn’t going to be tolerated by people interested in, you know, facts.

  16. gulp, yea sure gyges that is why obama sent all those arms to the syrian rebels.

  17. Buddha, Raff, et al.

One assumes that he meant “Legend has it that other than taking up arms against the country of his original citizenship…”
I’m pretty sure almost every country on earth considers it a crime to lead a rebel army.

  18. rafflaw,

Do tell….That is a new one for me….kind of like…the Catholic church….providing the bed and breakfast on the ships….and merely being compensated for the trouble with the treasury coffers being abundantly increased for the efforts…. Maybe they were the real cruise directors…..

  19. Gotta remember that they keep warm by lighting each others farts….grandpa tried to play and sharted the lighter….
