Folks at the National Rifle Association are celebrating what some are calling the “Palin effect” — a sharp rise in female membership in the NRA and gun ownership generally due to the rise of Sarah Palin. According to the article below, the Palin effect has encouraged new design and marketing efforts by gun manufacturers vis-a-vis women customers.
The article recounts how Regis Giles, 18, has become a hit with women in recounting her shooting of animals on her blog. (“Thwoop-pow! He is hit hard! He’s running! Get up! Run!… I Shoot, reload, shoot, reload, shoot.”). The closest thing we have on this blog is watching Nal find typos in my morning postings.
Diane Danielson of the NRA’s Women On Target program, say that Palin is responsible for an increase of 20 percent in female membership 20 per cent and “the NRA teaching 10,000 new women a year to shoot, and making more girls want to take up hunting.”
It is sort of like Jane Goddall as a role model . . . except you go and shoot the chimpanzees and then run for governor of Alaska.
Notably, Palin continues to appeal to an extremely narrow part of our society with her unfavorable numbers continuing to rise — and not just among Caribou. Methinks the most likely presidency in her future is that of the NRA.

Gov. Christie’s poll numbers drop after N.J. budget address

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie’s poll numbers have taken a hit since his budget address two weeks ago, according to a Rutgers-Eagleton poll released this morning.
Voters are split on whether they have a favorable or unfavorable impression of Christie, with 46 percent viewing him favorably and 44 percent unfavorably. That’s down significantly from December, when 49 percent of voters saw Christie favorably and 39 percent had an unfavorable impression.
“While some polls showed Gov. Christie’s support increasing before the budget speech, reaction to the budget itself is mixed, which appears to be reflected in a decline in his post-speech favorability and job performance ratings,” said poll director David Redlawsk.
Forty-eight percent of voters said they are displeased with the govenror’s proposed budget, while 45 percent said they are pleased.
When asked to rate Christie’s job performance, 14 percent said excellent, 28 percent said good, 30 percent said fair and 26 percent said poor. Fourteen percent graded him with an A, 24 percent gave him a B, 26 percent gave him a C, 15 percent gave him a D and 19 percent failed him with an F.
President Obama fares better than Christie among Garden State voters, with 57 percent viewing him favorably to 36 percent unfavorably.
U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez saw a slight uptick in his favorable ratings from December, with 34 percent of voters now viewing him favorably and 28 percent unfavorably. But the biggest number, 38 percent, had no opinion.
Rutgers-Eagleton surveyed 811 registered voters From Feb. 24 – 26. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Sarah Palin slams Gov. Chris Christie
“Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin slammed New Jersey governor Chris Christie, questioning whether the New Jersey Republican’s budget cutting represents “true courage.”
Speaking on Fox News, Ms. Palin contended that Mr. Christie’s budget cuts were born out of necessity.
“He has no choice but to cut budgets because he’s broke, his state is broke,” Ms. Palin said.
“What courage really is is, in the face of having a surplus, when you have an opportunity to spend spend spend other people’s money, that you still choose to rein in government,” the former governor added.
Ms. Palin, who is considering a run for president, is the latest potential Republican presidential candidate to take a verbal swipe at another potential candidate. A number of Republican leaders have suggested Mr. Christie as a potential candidate, noting his fiscal record as a potential advantage.
Mr. Christie continues to deny any interest in running for president, however, noting last week that he “knows” he could defeat President Obama in 2012.
With the 2012 presidential campaign quickly approaching, potential Republican presidential candidates have slowly began their process of distinguishing themselves from one another.
Ms. Palin seemed to suggest her own time as governor better demonstrates her commitment to fiscal conservatism, noting that she cut the Alaska state budget during her time as governor of Alaska.
This reminds me of the pet rock phenomenon,Palin in particular.

Sarah Palin is a hell of a salesperson, if you are selling stupidity. She probably has to write a note on her hand to remind her to pull the trigger. The NRA and Sarah Palin make a great match.

I can understand the atavistic thrill of hunting. I’m more upset that it sounds like it took her 4 shots to kill the animal, which is inhumane and definitely not something I’d be bragging about.

It is utterly disgusting to hear someone so EXCITED to be directly responsible for the deliberate death of a living thing. Must have been how Idi Amin or Adolph Hitler felt. This just makes me sick to my stomach.
The NRA is nothing more than a marketing arm of the gun manufacturers. Since they have no real new products to sell they need to find other ways to increase demand. Increasing fear and paranoia can only go so far, what you really want are new customers. Kids are out ( . . . er, right?) so that leaves women as the largest untapped market. S&W has been marketing a series of small frame handguns under the brand “LadySmith” for years. There are also several manufacturers that produce guns with pink trim. They try different approaches but this is not new by any stretch.
Makes me feel soooo safe….Yeah Baby….
More gun owners. More women gun owners. More gun violence. More dead innocents. What grand accomplishments. The NRA has so much to be proud of.
