Idaho Passes Strict Anti-Abortion Measure After Sponsor Invokes “Hand of God”

The Idaho House just passed a sweeping anti-abortion bill that grants no exceptions for rape, incest, severe fetal abnormality or the mental or psychological health of the mother. As if to avoid any question of the religious basis for the measure, the sponsor state Rep. Brent Crane, R-Nampa, explained to the House that this was God’s will.

Senate Bill 1165 bans abortion after 20 weeks on grounds of fetal pain. Crane invoked the “hand of the Almighty” and “His ways are higher than our ways. He has the ability to take difficult, tragic, horrific circumstances and then turn them into wonderful examples.” The measure passed on a 54-14 vote and now heads to the governor’s desk.

These measures have proven costly to the state. In the 1990s, the legislator passed an anti-abortion law and “spent nearly three-quarters of a million dollars” unsuccessfully defending the law.

Here is the information on Crane from the House website:

Born 07/02/1974 in Nampa ID; graduated in 1992 from Nampa Christian High School, received a B.A. in Political Science with emphasis in Public Administration from Boise State University 2005; Protestant; Vice President of Crane Alarm Service; family: wife Rochenda, son Keaton and daughter Riley.

  1. @Jim: In Numbers 31:27, Moses, speaking for God, instructs his soldiers to turn over 50% of their booty to the congregation, and keep 50% for themselves; (except for the 64 virgin human sacrifices to the Lord). That is a 50% tax on their earnings. So who is right, you or the Bible, the Holy Word of God?

If we want everyone to get a college education, who will work at walmart, mcdonalds, etc? We don’t build anything anymore because labor costs and lawsuits. These are real problems to overcome and at the same time we can’t keep taking from Paul to give Peter.

  4. I think its really great that Stamford Liberal and others posted so much research on the abortion issue.

I did read once of a survey that found that a big portion of women who get abortions are married women with children who are concerned about family budget issues.

  5. “These laws are inhumane, dogs at the SPCA are treated better than this. Welcome to the ugly face of zealotry, where science and medical knowledge are trumped by belief in miracles and predestination.” (gbk)

There is wisdom in gbk’s post.

Wisdom gained through pain would save others pain if only they would listen.

  6. Blouise,

“Too many … it was a rough morning today”

My guess is it was one of those “worth it” hangovers 😀

hahahahaha! God is a slippery sumthin…..

  8. In the ’80s, my girlfriend became pregnant and all seemed well until the early stages of the second trimester. At this point abnormalities were noted in bone structure. To make a long story short, the fetus suffered from extreme dwarfism – so much so that the rib cage was not growing and subsequently would not allow the child to breathe once born.

I spent $8,000 (1988 coin) on genetic tests from three different institutions to confirm that this was indeed true, and that by all appearances the cause was simply random mutation. Three specialists, in addition to the general practitioner, concurred that the child would not survive more that thirty seconds to a minute outside of the womb.

It was agreed to abort the pregnancy in the fourth month due to the overwhelming medical evidence that the child would not have survived after birth due to not beeing able to breathe. It was a traumatic decision to make.

Which is more cruel: to birth a child only so it can asphyxiate upon its very birth, or to allow a medical procedure that causes much less suffering?

Which is more cruel: to force a woman to carry to term only to see the newborn die, or to allow a medical procedure that causes much less suffering?

These laws are inhumane, dogs at the SPCA are treated better than this. Welcome to the ugly face of zealotry, where science and medical knowledge are trumped by belief in miracles and predestination.

  9. Jim:

I have a question for you, since all the people on the right keep talking about cutting, cutting, cutting what happen to the word **revenue** ?

If I’m not mistaken more revenue would help bring down debt,I think.

Oh tha’ts right they are more interested in giving away the store.

    Blouis,

I thought Obama was black and white. So why only the black use?

Earth to Jim … come in Jim … denial doesn’t change anything … he’s still the boss of you.

  13. I read Stamford Liberal’s answer to Jim’s question … I think it went something like “Boobie & Idiot”

Although Jim didn’t ask me, I’ll answer anyway … “Any poor or middle-class kid who hasn’t figured out how to work the system of grants, scholarships, and part-time jobs in order to get a degree must have republicans for parents.”

  14. How can anyone blame God for man’s actions. God simply said “you reap what you sow.” We also live with the ability to make choices. Unfortunately, some make bad choices that have bad consequences for innocent people. When these events occur, the easy thing to do is play the blame game instead of trusting God to see you through.

  15. Jim,

Don’t worry darlin’, in another 6 years that big, black, bogeyman will be gone and you won’t have to be bossed around by him no more.

The heavens will open, the sun will shine, gold will fall like rain upon your lily-white butt and all will be well in your world … except that the democrats will beat you at the polls again and a woman will move into the oval office to become the new boss of you.

    There’s always 2024 …

Nebraska Senator Sues God to Stop Terror Threats
    By Ryan Singel September 17, 2007 | 4:04 pm

Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers (D – Omaha) filed suit against God Friday, asking a court to order the Almighty and his followers to stop making terrorist threats.

The suit (.pdf), filed in a Nebraska district court, contends that God, along with his followers of all persuasions, “has made and continues to make terroristic threats of grave harm to innumerable persons.” Those threats are credible given God’s history, Chambers’ complaint says.

Chambers, in a fit of alliteration, also accuses God of causing “fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects, and the like.”

Likewise the suit accuses God of having his chroniclers “disseminate in written form, said admissions, throughout the Earth in order to inspire fear, dread, anxiety, terror and uncertainty, in order to coerce obedience to Defendant’s will.”

Chambers, who has represented Omaha, Nebraska since 1970, asked the Douglas County district court for summary judgment or to set a quick hearing date “if the Court deems such a hearing not to be a futile act.”

The senator also wants the court to issue a permanent injunction prohibiting God from issuing plagues and terrorist threats. It’s unclear how this could work since God is usually understood to be all powerful.

Chambers does admit that God is omnipresent and omniscient, however. Since God is everywhere, the Nebraska court has jurisdiction, Chambers argues, and since God is all-knowing, Chambers need not serve him with a notice of the lawsuit.

The lawsuit indicates that Chambers attempted to make God appear in order to serve him by saying “Come out, come out, wherever you are,” but the Almight declined, like many defendants, to make it easy for a plaintiff to serve him with court papers.

Chambers filed the suit to make a point that the state constitution allows lawsuits to be filed for any reason, according to WOWT.

Attempts to reach Chambers for comment were unsuccessful.

God did not immediately respond to a non-denominational prayer for comment by this reporter.

The suit is Chambers v. God.
