Idaho Passes Strict Anti-Abortion Measure After Sponsor Invokes “Hand of God”

The Idaho House just passed a sweeping anti-abortion bill that grants no exceptions for rape, incest, severe fetal abnormality or the mental or psychological health of the mother. As if to avoid any question of the religious basis for the measure, the sponsor state Rep. Brent Crane, R-Nampa, explained to the House that this was God’s will.

Senate Bill 1165 bans abortion after 20 weeks on grounds of fetal pain. Crane invoked the “hand of the Almighty” and “His ways are higher than our ways. He has the ability to take difficult, tragic, horrific circumstances and then turn them into wonderful examples.” The measure passed on a 54-14 vote and now heads to the governor’s desk.

These measures have proven costly to the state. In the 1990s, the legislator passed an anti-abortion law and “spent nearly three-quarters of a million dollars” unsuccessfully defending the law.

Here is the information on Crane from the House website:

Born 07/02/1974 in Nampa ID; graduated in 1992 from Nampa Christian High School, received a B.A. in Political Science with emphasis in Public Administration from Boise State University 2005; Protestant; Vice President of Crane Alarm Service; family: wife Rochenda, son Keaton and daughter Riley.

  1. I will also point out that American anti-abortion laws do not apply to the rich. Abortion is legal on demand (no reason must be given) in Canada, Australia and Germany. There are first rate hospitals and doctors in all of these countries that will perform an abortion without any drama; just pay for your travel and the procedure. The patient won’t even need a translator; they all speak English.

  2. Send all the unwanted babies prevented from being aborted to those complaining about abortion (like this political assclown)and let them raise them! After a few hundred children apiece, they’d get the idea – WE CAN’T SUPPORT THEM. Then, maybe, they’d stfu.

As far as government and debt: they went off the rails years ago by declaring (in court) that corporations are people and have the same rights. Everything has gone downhill (and will continue until collapse) since then.

We’re immersed in distraction every minute of every day so that the .01% of the population (the money hoarders) can continue their pillaging and polluting of the world without being bothered.

This gross misappropriation of wealth, the insanity of the way we live off the planet (as opposed to being stewards thereof), combined with overpopulation and the attendant scarcity of resources will cause the collapse of civilization in short order.

    Interesting times ahead.

  3. I dont know about the hand of god but I certainly can see a baby’s hand.

You can see a doll’s hand, too, and a mannequin’s hand and face, and all sorts of representations of hands and faces. Those are not what make us human.

What differentiates humans from the animals we kill and eat (or just kill, like vermin) is the cortex and consciousness in general.

The fetus in the first few weeks has no brain, period. In the first trimester, it’s brain is less advanced than the brain of a dog. I wouldn’t say there is a developmental bright line between fetus and person; but it is perfectly clear that in the first trimester, the fetus is not a person, not conscious, and is incapable of thought or emotion.

Looking like a person doesn’t make it a person any more than it makes a toy doll a person.

  5. kay,

“I think its really great that Stamford Liberal and others posted so much research on the abortion issue.”

Thank you – I refuse to live the rest of my life, and have my daughter live the rest of hers, in a country where some believe women aren’t worthy of the rights we’ve earned, particularly when it comes to the right of privacy and the right for us to think for ourselves.

    Lol!

  6. Trojan,

“The 14 trillion Jim is quoting is total debt, the 230 billion you are talking about after the Clinton Admin did not include all of the unfunded mandates which are included in the 14 trillion.”

I’m going to take an educated guess that you do realize that the 14 trillion also include the Bush Admin’s two unfunded wars, unfunded tax cuts (which not only added to the deficit but drained the 230 billion surplus), the unfunded No Child Left Behind, the unfunded Medicare Prescription Plan … or do I need to go on?

For as much as people would like to pin the full deficit on the current admin, a large chunk of it was incurred from 2001 to 2009.

  8. one can be opposed to abortion but recognize the rights of an individual to do what they think is right.

but then that is the rub isn’t it? I don’t think government should legislate morality. I was merely voicing my opinion on the issue and how I would deal with it if the situation presented itself.

  10. Obama has put at least 3 trillion onto the debt in the span of 2 years. It isnt pretty unless of course your ambition is to increase the debt.

  11. Stamford Liberal:

“If government works then how did we get a 14 trillion dollar debt?”

Here’s a better question for you, sport – What happened to a $230 billion budget surplus in two years? Further, where have 10 years of tax cuts done?”

The 14 trillion Jim is quoting is total debt, the 230 billion you are talking about after the Clinton Admin did not include all of the unfunded mandates which are included in the 14 trillion.

The balanced budget is a smoke and mirrors thing.

  12. HOTT:

Personally, I’d have a hard time telling someone what to do with their own body. You see it’s really not my business. But then again I don’t have the voice of the deity in my ear. What’s She think about the Yankees’ chances’ this season ?

I think we’re about to have a show down with these theocratic nationalists. Bring it on.

  14. If we want everyone to get a college education, who will work at walmart, mcdonalds, etc?

    You will.

  15. Oops; sorry. Mis-remembered: It was only 32 virgin sacrifices, not 64.
