Father Knows Best? Florida Man Arrested After Video Showing Him Urging His Teenage Son To Fight Another Boy

Philip Struthers of Tampa Bay, Florida has a curious concept of good parenting skills. In the video below, Struthers is heard egging his 16-year-old son on in a fight with another teen. Struthers is now under arrest for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.


The deep voice on the video below has been identified as Struthers, giving such advice as “Start throwing punches, son!” and “Yes! Yes! Yes! Knock him out! Knock him out!” Then there is the lesson in good sportsmanship: “Slam his head on the ground.”

Whatever happened to a nice pinewood derby for father and son bonding.

We have seen similar parents with gladiatorial tendencies (here and here and here).

    You can say I am too sensitive, but even as a joke I find your comment regarding forced sterilization hard to stomach. Countless women of color and poor white women were forcibly sterilized in this country. This practice extended well into the 1980s and in fact continues on Third World women. This is similar to a joke I recently heard about rape. And just like the rape joke, not funny–Not funny in the least.

    Yeah, I was really hot after breaking up that fight. I was across the street on the Woodstock Square volunteering at a Friends of the Library event and I saw the two girls start to go at and the parents of the one girl pushing her to fight. Luckily I did not go after that parent. I just yelled at them and told them to grow up and to go home.

  6. Holy Crap! This guy was even upset that they broke the fight up! He should be in jail for such wonderful parenting! I tried to break up a fight between two 8th grade girls right in downtown Woodstock and one of the parents was egging his daughter to keep fighting. I got my shirt torn breaking it up and I almost punched the father for instigating it. Disgusting. Defending yourself is one thing, but setting up a fight in the street is criminal. Kids are going to get into scrapes, but this is criminal.

  10. I read about a fight in which one 16 year old punched another once. In the nose. The bones shattered and went up into his brain and killed him. The punch thrower was just an ordinary teenaged boy, nothing out of the ordinary.

  11. My guess was psychiatric nurse…, so I wasn’t far off the mark… Thanks for sharing that. Very sad…

    (Having said this, I know some wonderful (and relatively sane) people who work in both of these areas…)

  14. I knew a woman in High School who would literally drive two of her kids to go fight.

    I also saw her chase one son with a kitchen knife for using the coffee maker to make tea without asking permission.

    True story.

    And if I told you her day job?

    You’d probably not believe me.

  15. Whatever the hell happened to two people fighting it out and getting called by the Principal to explain your actions….
