IMF President Strauss-Kahn Arrested For Assault of New York Hotel Maid

IMF President Dominique Strauss-Kahn last week was widely viewed as heading to the French Presidency. He is now viewed this week as more likely to head to an American jail. In an extraordinary criminal complaint, Strauss-Kahn is described as a sexual predator who spontaneously assaulted a hotel maid. And we thought former World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz was an embarrassment.

[UPDATE: Strauss-Kahn has been declared a flight risk and denied bond. Given his effort to leave the country, this is not too surprising. However, it is not clear why an electronic bracelet cannot be used in such a case.]
The account that has emerged resembles an international version of “Bonfire of the Vanities.” The recent case of Moshe Katsav comes to mind where an international leader proved to be a rapist.

What is fascinating is that the IMF was well-aware of Strauss-Kahn’s reputation for affairs with subordinates and his nickname “The Great Seducer.” However, it appears he may be more of “The Great Assaulter” given the account of the 32-year-old maid. Strauss-Kahn, 62, had just checked into the luxury Sofitel hotel in a $3,000 a night suite ( pretty pricey digs for a guy who started his political career as a member of the Union of Communist Students and was the leading Socialist candidate for President of France). Strauss-Kahn allegedly came out of the bathroom naked and chased her down a hallway and forced her into a bedroom. He then reportedly forced her to give him oral sex. She said she was able to break away and escape. She ran and told the staff.

What then unfolded is right out of a movie. Strauss-Kahn left the hotel so fast that he left his cellphone in the room. He was sitting in first-class on a flight to France that was about to taxi to the runway when police arrested him. He was then identified by the woman in a line up.

The contemporary account given by the woman and her injuries treated at the hospital makes for a particularly strong basis for a criminal case. Her selection of Strauss-Kahn in a lineup obviously reinforces that case. Finally, the reportedly rapid departure from the hotel will not sit well with the jury. We have not heard his side of this case but his attorney has a steep climb to get him into a better position. If this allegation is ultimately supported, one might expect to hear of additional cases since this sounds like an individual who was unable to control such impulses. Such extreme cases are rarely isolated and tend to be the end of a pattern. There will be an obvious interest by detectives in any modus operandi evidence and whether he had committed such assaults in the past and gotten away with it. That is not to say that Strauss-Kahn has such a history but this is very extreme alleged conduct and will likely be a focus of the police.

It will also be interesting to see if there is a claim of medication or some other influence producing this violent reaction.

It looks like, either way this goes, the Socialists will have to find another candidate. They might want to start with someone who does not need a $3000 a night hotel room or a criminal lawyer on retainer.

  1. I do not doubt that it happened the way that it is claimed…I also do not doubt that the powers that be want to keep what they have in the way of making money……

The IMF proposal made public Tuesday backs the use of capital controls as a last resort after countries strengthen banking systems and adopt economic measures such as building up reserves, tightening fiscal policies and lowering central bank interest rates.
“This framework will be used by the fund as a basis to providing policy advice to all member countries,” Aasim Husain, an adviser in the IMF’s Strategy Policy and Review Department, said on a conference call with reporters. “Over time, it will be refined and adjusted based on experience.”

  2. It’s strange that Strauss-Kahn was accused of anal rape only, not vaginal rape. Isn’t all the porno these days about anal rape?

  3. From the previous NY Times link:

Mr. Wiesel expressed sadness for Ms. Sinclair. “There is a Talmudic saying, ‘No one is the owner of his instincts,’ ” he said. “But controlling them, that is civilization.”

On April 30, Ms. Sinclair wrote about the wedding of Prince William. “I can understand those who didn’t miss a crumb. As if, quite simply, we were like children who, before going to sleep, want a tale, a story with a princess and a dream, because real life catches up with you soon enough. …”

This is terrible for all involved but, especially, the alleged victim, if what she claims is true…

Backing Her Man With Impressive Resources

PARIS — She was much more famous than her husband, and much wealthier, too. Now she joins the unhappy club of wives standing by their man in the face of a crescendo of tales of sexual betrayal, spurred in her case by extraordinary and tawdry criminal charges of attempted rape of a hotel maid.

  5. Looks like if Mr. Khan is found guilty and the maid is not telling a whopper lie; as now is in the celebrated case of former California Governator Schwanzen what’s his name, someone will have to spank him on the pee-pee.

  6. Swarthmore,
The Ben Stein link was hilarious. Kahn is one dirty creep and should not have been granted bail.

  7. Think in terms of DNA be created…aka designer DNA….DNA replication is a biological process that occurs in all living organisms and copies their DNA; it is the basis for biological inheritance.

  8. SWM,

I am not saying that he did not do it….nor am I saying that he is not guilty….What I am saying is our government will not allow a service member to ship out if their debt exceeds assets….it is a service regulation…why…so they will not be susceptible to bribery…

I am also saying that people with an interest to get rid of him had every incentive to do so if he was going to take away the ability to keep the greed coming…

The people in power could have just set up the coincidence…far fetched….but hey…some people think Oswald acted alone…and Bush was justified in the war with Iraq….I do not on either….

  9. Well why do some men think they can get away with it and others don’t? Is it because all men want to be rapists but only some of them think they can get away with it? That doesn’t seem to me to be true about the people I know but I wasn’t really comfortable with real aggressive competitive macho type guys. So are guys who are so aggressive and macho that they are more likely to “rise to top” at work then more interested in humiliating and dominating people in general? Or is it something related to testosterone? And what about women who “rise to the top”, are they more likely to be mean and want to humiliate and hurt others?

  10. Kay, I don’t the behavior of these men has anything to do with the women they are married to. It is all about them.

I wasn’t asking from personal sexual experience since I have been married for 29 years and my husband is a nice guy. I was trying to figure out a nasty person who was apparently addicted to prostitues — calling them all the time, spending more than he could afford, and risking his reputation and job.

What about Elliot Spitzer? Why do you think he did what he did when he was married to an attractive woman and probably had enough sex at home? Strauss-Kahn was also married and the gossip columns didn’t come up with any statements I saw to the effect that his wife wasn’t putting out. Same with Arnold Schwarzenegger — no reason to think his wife wasn’t available to him. Of course, prostitution and having sex with employees isn’t the same as rape, but there is a continum. They say that rape is about power not sex.

In this “stranger than fiction world”, little would surprise me… Like Swarthmore mom, I’m inclined to believe alleged victim, but what if she was steered in his direction… She might not even be aware of it…

I know this, beyond the shadow of any doubt: People are being used by “the state” in ways that defy imagination — in ways that strain credulity…

Who knows, though. Swarthmore mom could be absolutely right.
