Science Marches On . . . Even In Texas

Last Thursday, July 21, the Texas Board of Education in an 8-0 unanimous vote opted to keep teaching evolution in high school biology classes using approved scientifically accurate textbook supplements from established mainstream publishers. They did not approve of the creationist-backed supplements from International Databases, LLC. Four times as many people showed up to testify in favor of the scientifically accurate texts as showed up to oppose them.

Although a creationist member of the Board objected to the supplement from textbook publisher Holt McDougal by releasing  a list of Holt’s supposed errors involving evolution and common descent, the Board responded by noting that the list had not been signed off on by the Board of Education’s review panel in full.  The Board went on to approve the Hold McDougal supplement, but submitted it for review by Commissioner of Education Robert Scott to look at the supposed errors and suggest changes to the Holt McDougal supplement.  Local educators and the National Center for Science Education are confident any of Director Scott’s revisions will show the current state of evolutionary biology.  In a statement released by the NCSE, NSCE Director Dr. Eugenie  Scott praised the Texas Board of Education, saying “These supplements reflect the overwhelming scientific consensus that evolution is the core of modern biology, and is a central and vital concept in any biology class. That these supplements were adopted unanimously reflects a long overdue change in the board. I commend the board for its refusal to politicize science education.”  This is squarely a victory in the battle to keep public education educational over the forces that would make public education into religious and/or political indoctrination.

  1. Scoring this festival, it’s Science: 100, Kderosa: 0.

Kderosa just likes to argue, and laugh at his/her/its/their own witty crapulence. The subject matter is clearly irrelevant.

Trying to turn Gene into Buddah is hysterical. For your next trick, why don’t you disappear, never to return? THAT would be noteworthy.

  2. Bdaman,

Whether or not what you say is true, the Buddha left you – but you might not be ready to move out of denial yet. That’s fine. And as for the job – I don’t need no stinkin’ job! Two weeks ago I was unemployed, today I am the head of a (proto-)company with 3 employees…

  3. Thanks my friend. We are a community here, and I have been impressed how we all come together when the skies turn dark.

  4. Damn O.S. when it rains it pours.

You know O.S. a few years back I was going through what felt like the wringer and I couldn’t get suicide out of my head. One of my best friends committed suicide and a few months later another long life friends wife jumped off the top of the Dames Point Bridge. It’s the longest cable suspended bridge in the U.S.

I’ve since learned that no matter how bad I think I got it, there is somebody that has it worse.

I wish you all the best and pray that you can continue to be strong and handle it all.

  5. @Slarti, but not as idiotic as yours. I do look forward to your continued idiocy.

  6. Bdaman, don’t ask. Glad to hear you are getting some help from your sister. That has to be taking a load off you, even if it is temporary.

My daughter completes a full month in the hospital today and tomorrow will be the start of her fifth week. NO ONE (!) stays on a medical-surgical unit that long. Every time they think they have her fixed up they find something new. She had radiation therapy four years ago, then a hip replacement because the radiation caused avascular necrosis. Then the De Puy hip replacement failed and she needs a revision. We are waiting on Vanderbilt to call and let us know they are ready for her. The surgery takes anywhere from five to a dozen hours and she is now too medically fragile to have it done. They just found a “nodule” in her neck and another in her lung and are planning a biopsy. Adding to her problem is unremitting grief. Her son (my 17 y/o grandson) died last March of cancer that was in his neck and lung. To say that she is scared is an understatement.

  7. Bdatroll (this is entirely friendly – I was worried that you were feeling sad since the Buddha left you…),

He didn’t. Gene Howington is Buddha

  8. Bdatroll (this is entirely friendly – I was worried that you were feeling sad since the Buddha left you…),

I wasn’t wrestling with Goldberg, I was playing cat and mouse with Deano – almighty lord and master of teh birfer scummit (and a random birther who wasn’t very good at it…). Did you see his brave new tactic* to cover up whenever he bravely runs away? I’m thinking he should change his name to Sir Robin. (By the way, you should come birf at the Fogbow sometime – I bet you’d be the favorite pet troll there within a week… and you’ve probably got more cojones than all the other birthers put together – sorry to damn you with faint praise).

    * FOGBLOW – an acronym meaning:

    Formally and
    Officially
    Grant that
    Birthers
    Lose and
    Obots
    Win

    It’s a great time-saver for us obots…

    Byron,

*sigh* – it didn’t have to be this way.

kidiot (yes, Byron, that was an ad hominem…),

I’ve got work to do now, but I’ll pummel you about the head and neck (figuratively speaking) again later. Don’t worry, your posts will still be idiotic (Byron, that one was justified).

    OS,

Alfven’s theories* may not be right, but, like the theory of the aurora that they are based on (which won him the Nobel prize), they are freaking brilliant. More later…

    Mespo(48)^3 (working in hexadecimal today…),

Don’t worry, I’ll get around to deconstructing kidiot’s fallacious garbage… thanks for pointing out the big picture. 😉

  9. Bdaman, I was not referring to you in my previous comment. BTW, how is your family? I was thinking of you yesterday.

Sorry the power went out the last thirty minutes so I’m just getting back up.

Thanks for the thoughts. We are o.k. We have the long awaited results appointment with the endocrinologist tomorrow 2 p.m. My mother has been staying at her house with my sister the last thirty days and I’ve been spending my time doing family stuff, hence the reason I haven’t posted alot lately.

    How bout you?

  10. Why don’t you tell us again how NASA invented the IC. I never get enough of that scientific blunder of yours. C’mon, amuse me.

  11. OS, you nutters are swimming in quite the shallow pool, no one is out of their league here.

  12. And BTW, understanding the origin of the universe leads directly to when it was first possible for life to be sustained in the primordial soup on Earth, which led to multicelled life, and thence to the critter called Cro Magnon man.

  13. Kd, it is OK. We understand you are out of your league and are just messing with you. I knew full well you would not be able to discuss those ideas when I asked you to. Let’s just move on, shall we.

  14. OS, this thread is about evolution, not the origination of the universe. You also just made a false dilemma fallacy. You want me to expalin why? If you make any wrong points about the origin of the universe, I’ll be sure to weigh in, otherwise your scientific discussions aren’t all that interesting–which is odd for an actual scientist.

  15. KD, if you will scan up, that is part of the discussion I was having with Dr. Slarti and a couple of other commenters. Since you seem to be so sharp this morning, I thought you might want to weigh in on, you know, the actual discussion this science thread is about.

If you do not know anything about science beyond what you can find in Wikipedia, just admit it and we can move on.

  16. KD, if you will scan up, that is part of the discussion I was having with Dr. Slarti and a couple of other commenters. Since you seem to be so sharp this morning, I thought you might want to weigh in on, you know, the actual discussion this science thread is about.

  17. OS, is that relevant to this discussion? Or does it just happen to be something you know a little something about and want to finally demonstrate some knowledge to improve your bona fides in this forum which have been taking a beating as of late? See how easy it is to do cheap innuendo. So make your argument or run along to your nap time.
