Texas Governor Rick Perry has revealed one of the main distinctions that he sees between himself and Barack Obama. He insists that American needs a president who is “in love” with America. As someone who previously indicated that he was contemplating secession of his state from the United States, this appears to be a case of “
separation secession making the heart grow fonder.”
In Waterloo, Perry put forward his test of love. He told the audience “I think you want a president who is passionate about America — that’s in love with America.” Clearly that is meant to exclude Obama.
Perry clearly has become more enraptured by the union since his contemplation of armed divorce in 2009: “There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that.”

When secession-happy Gov. Perry has the nerve to say that he loves America, he is counting on Gore Vidal’s maxim that we live in “The United States of Amnesia.”
Being a politician first and foremost (despite his vaunted Dominionist piety) his greatest devotion will never be to the truth.
