Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman took a startling position in the GOP debates last night — he suggested that the party not “run from science.” After candidates have lined up to reject everything from global warming to evolution, Huntsman is a standout in his Galileo moment in the GOP.
Huntsman stated:
“Listen, when you make comments that fly in the face of what 98 out of 100 climate scientists have said, when you call into question the science of evolution, all I’m saying is that, in order for the Republican Party to win, we can’t run from science. We can’t run from mainstream conservative philosophy. We’ve got to win voters.”
Wow.
I have long admired Jon Huntsman after we testified together before a House Committee when he was still governor of Utah. We then by coincidence flew back to Utah on the same plane. I found him very bright and engaging. I have little doubt that, if the GOP nominated Huntsman, they would win the White House — with many independent and Democratic votes going to Huntsman. He is moderate on many issues and exceptionally knowledgable about business issues. He also believes in science — a promising factor for a president. It is remarkable that such a position would make Huntsman a standout, but that is a measure of the times in which we are living. Of course, he lost the Pope Urban VIII vote.
With Obama at record lows in the polls, the Democrats are hanging their hopes on the GOP selecting an extremist and rejecting Huntsman. It has been pretty clear for months that Democrats are not going to be given a choice in their own party despite the desire of some to dump Obama. The problem is that Obama is now so unpopular that even some of the more extreme candidates might be able beat him.
Last night, Ron Paul won the straw polling after the debate.

SwM,
Kasich is so unpopular here in Ohio that the Republican Governors Association is planning to spend millions of out of state corporate dollars in an attempt to prop up Kasich’s agenda. The new ad coming out will feature Kasich talking about a “new path” he has decided to take.
Hilarious!
AY, That is right. Try to make me a villain because I disagree with you on so many aspects of life. I do look distrustfully at those that do not consider women’s rights when discussing human rights. It has absolutely nothing to do with me personally. It has to do with lack of consideration for women in general. …
AN,
I think the current majority of the Sct is scary as all get out….Thomas should be lumped in the group just like SWM stated with “ASKANCE.”
AN,
That is ok…I do not feel that you have subterfuge any disagreement….lol…
Definition of ASKANCE
1: with a side-glance : obliquely
2: with disapproval or distrust : scornfully ..
So if someone disagrees with you then they have the right to disagree with you and then they may look at you with askance as well…..Good choice of words….
The bigger picture is human rights….People are looking for employment…Just like when I did a term at the Department of Civil Rights…there was a project that centered on TN vs Garner….They wanted it turned into a racial issue…..After taking a survey of the various LEO accuracy standards….It became more of a Human Rights issue….I wrote the paper….as a “Human Rights Issue”….damn if it did not get turned to a racial issue…Just imagine a Police Department not requiring accuracy in the use of deadly force….nor having a department policy for training officers…I recall one case where a cop chased a defendant down the railroad tracks in order to prevent them from fleeing….Makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over…the LEO destroyed a 40 thousand dollar vehicle to catch a kid smoking dope….all’s they found on the kid was an alligator clip…btw this was a female officer that did that…So should women not be made police officers of looked with askance…..
AY,
I was quoting a friend… I think that he purposely omitted Thomas. He was simply addressing what the 8 years of “W” wrought, I believe. (I didn’t realize that SM had addressed her comment to you, in particular. My comment was intended to be a general one.
AY I never claimed I was personally attacked and don’t care if I am. Can’t afford to be that thin skinned. I don’t take these discussions that personally but I do take look askance at those that do not consider womens rights when evaluating a candidate.
“Ron Paul came off as crazy as Bachmann last night.” (SwM)
Agree
And I too voted for Kerry…and I was in one of the few states that Kerry carried….Does that mean that I am a Democrat on that day….
When people disagree they actually disagree…when subterfuge is disguised as disagreement, then it is no longer a different of opinion….it is an attack….
Read my Lips, famous words, I am Independent regardless of the mainstream logic or what may appear illogical to you……..there are many folks on here that are Independent…..Yes…independent…and if they offer an opinion different than yours, you seem to take it as a personal attack…
As far as Ann Richards…not Anne Richards btw….I suppose familiarity breads contempt… I knew her before she became power stricken……Ronnie Earle is an ass…but he did the right things….Robert aka Bob Bullock was a jackass as well….but not to be confused with the porn star….
AY Thought maybe you were a republican since you said you were a McCain supporter but did not say you were one.
I did not have the best choice between Gore and Bush according to many. Was not that fond of Kerry but i voted for him. It is more often that way than not. When a woman states an opinion and disagrees with a man is that considered a personal attack? Don’t agree with your views of Anne Richards either.
“Listen, when you make comments that fly in the face of what 98 out of 100 climate scientists have said, when you call into question the science of evolution, all I’m saying is that, in order for the Republican Party to win, we can’t run from science. 2011? Really? Really? This is having to be said to a major political party in 2011? Yeesh!

AY, Keep searching for your “good” republican to replace “bad” Obama. Suppose you think Kagan and Sotomayor are worse than Alito and Roberts, too. Obviously women’s issues are of no concern.”
Just like jacking me and stating that I am a republican….I have no opinion on Kagen or Sotomayor….So far they have not made any bonehead or egregious decisions….But that is just me….
So as far as the statement you made: “Obviously women’s issues are of no concern.” It does not compute…people can disagree and still maintain a civil conversation….don’t you think…To disagree with someone does not mean that personal attacks are warranted….don’t you agree?
As far as Good Republican, Good Democrat…..I as well as a number of folks are hoping someone good will be elected….it is pretty damn sad when you are not voting for someone, but against someone else…..a very sad state of affairs…you do agree?
Anon Nurse,
I did not say that I would not vote against the other guy….I agree that at present Obama is the lesser of two evils….I could not agree with you more about Alito, Robert and Citizens….You left out Thomas….I have been a supporter of having a Civil Sct and a Criminal Sct Court for decades….something similar to Texas…..I am an ardent support of Marshall and Brennan of the USSCT….They got 99.99 per cent of the criminal cases correct….I think that they only got about 50 per cent correct in the civil arena…But that is just me….
Though SWM has stated that I am a republican….that could be further from the truth and labels work for some folks….I am anything but a republican…I am about as independent and irreverent as you can get….the closest I can be labeled is a Old School Texas Democrat….I don’t care what you do with your sheep in the field….that is your business….but when you expect me to pay for your counseling….you better take another look….Other words Socially Liberal…. Fiscally Conservative…
I think government ought to stay out of our lives…. I am not for Abortion nor am I against it….That is a personal choice…..Though I am for assisted suicide, regardless of health….

He may truly believe this, and I gather his record shows he does.
But it’s not such a startling position, even in the GOP, because it’s seems like a Price is Right strategy.
@AY priced the car at 13,000, @SM priced it at 11,500, @MS at 8,000 @EB at prices the car at $9,100, and coming in last @JonHuntsman prices the car at @13,001
If you assume there still is a sizable contingent of pro-science Republicans, he collects their votes.
To follow up on Swarthmore mom’s comment, a friend of mine says that he has four words for anyone who is thinking about someone other than Obama:
Alito, Roberts and Citizens United.

SWM,
Like I said…He is NOT BLOCKED anymore than Clinton was….As I recall Clinton had an impeachment indictment to worry about at the time….He was still able to get a balanced budget passed….and what is Obama’s legacy? Sure Obama had the BC issue…that seems to have resolved itself through the courts….
I agree with you that Rahm was better than Daley….I still do not think that Obama has really done anything better than Bush…If you missed it, that is what most of the people that are complaining, are complaining about…
What Bush and Obama have in common is this…They have both increased their personal wealth since being elected president.
Bush’s income in 2007 Tax forms released last month, however, showed 2007 income of $924,000 for the Bushes.
President Barack Obama’s tax return for 2010 showed he and First Lady Michelle Obama earned $1,728,096, most of which came from the sale of Obama’s books, including The Audacity of Hope. The couple, who filed jointly, paid $453,770 in federal taxes and got a refund of $12,334.
The Obamas’ effective tax rate was about 26 percent.
