I saw this amazing clip this weekend from FOX where the anchors attacked a women because she left her kids with family and friends to participate in the Occupy Wall Street protests.
The mother, Stacey Hessler of Florida, was saying that she felt this was a historic moment for citizens to take to the streets. It is funny how such commitment is inspiring in those who share your views, but disgusting for those who do not.
The New York Post has a decidedly negative profile of her, though it seems short on independent sources. What is striking about the Fox report is the view that any mother who leaves her children to join such a protest is “filth.”
Elaine,
A guy can hope can’t he?? 🙂
Re: Oakland … no weather change is going to change their circumstances and the mayor is learning some hard lessons about turning the city over to gangs of cops. Also …
Is it really going to snow Saturday?

Swarthmore mom,
“Yesterday, Romney refused to support Ohio’s union busting bill.”
Guess who’s helping the anti-union effort in Ohio? None other than Dick Cheney’s little girls. The rotten apples don’t fall far from the diseased tree.
rafflaw,
“Gupta is the fall guy. I am hoping that there are a few more to join him.”
I wouldn’t hold my breath too long waiting for more indictments. I’d be pleasantly surprised if more were to join him.
anon nurse,
Great link. and so true.
Swarthmore, That mayor in Oakland has go to go.
Blouise, Gupta is the fall guy. I am hoping that there are a few more to join him.

Poor Gupta … do you think he’ll sing like a soprano or proclaim his innocence and fight the fight until he cuts a deal?
Doesn’t really matter … he’s got to know that his days of sailing with the 1% are over. Marie Antoinettes do not serve cake to those who get their names in the papers for anything other than being in the right place and wearing the right clothes. !%ers can be rather shallow that way.
Poor Gupta …

Good ol’ Gupta … darling of the 1%ers
Some random thoughts
Re: Romney … Republicans are tearing their hair trying to grab some headlines. They were hoping to get the attention of the electorate by having all these debates as Clinton and Obama did but the OWS stuff is taking them off the front pages and ruining all their plans.
Re: Oakland … no weather change is going to change their circumstances and the mayor is learning some hard lessons about turning the city over to gangs of cops. Also …
Some more news about the way the 1% and the 1% wannabees help each other out with insider trading criminality will be breaking … just in time to really piss off the 99%.
It’s gettin’ really hot out there for the 1%ers and their bought and paid for politicians.
Yesterday, Romney refused to support Ohio’s union busting bill. Today, he decides to support it.

Occupy Wall Street’s Battle Against American-Style Authoritarianism
Wednesday 26 October 2011
by: Henry A. Giroux, Truthout
Only a humanity to whom death has become as indifferent as its members, that has itself died, can inflict it administratively on innumerable people.
-Theodor Adorno

Excerpt:
As the realm of democratic politics shrinks and is turned over to market forces, social bonds crumble and any representation of communal cohesion is treated with disdain. As the realm of the social disappears, public values and any consideration of the common good are erased from politics, while the social state and responsible modes of governing are replaced by a corporate-controlled punishing state and a winner-take-all notion of social relations. Within this form of casino capitalism, social problems are placed entirely on the shoulders of individuals, just as the forces of privatization, deregulation and commodification weaken public institutions and undermine the web of human bonds and modes of solidarity that provide the foundations for a democratic politics and a political and economic democracy. Younger and older Americans are now saying, “We have had enough,” and their spirit of resistance is as educational as it is political.
At this same moment, young people all over the world are developing a new language of ethics, community, and democracy in order to imagine a type of society and global world other than the one that is currently on display. It is imperative for intellectuals, educators, social workers, organized labor, artists and other cultural workers to join with them in order to put the question of radical democracy, solidarity, and economic and racial justice on the political agenda.
This suggests we need to forego the fractured, single-issue politics of the past by refusing to argue for isolated agendas. It suggests developing a social movement that rejects small enclaves in favor of a broader social movement that can address how the current configuration of neoliberal capitalism and other antidemocratic modes of authoritarianism work as part of a larger totality. Such a globalized movement must offer to all people the tools of a politics that embraces both a radical imagination and a radical democracy.
This means making evident not only how casino capitalism intensifies the pathologies of racism, student debt, war, inequality, sexism, xenophobia, poverty, unemployment and violence, but also how we might take up the challenge of developing a politics and pedagogy that can serve and actualize a democratic notion of the social – that is, how we might understand and collectively organize for a politics whose hope lies with defending the shared values, spaces and public spheres that enable an emergent radical democracy. OS,
The Whole World is Watching and it doesn’t like what it sees. Unbelievable video.
Swarthmore,
I hope the recall effort continues against this Mayor if she is approving of this police violence.
http://blog.sfgate.com/abraham/2011/10/26/occupy-oakland-mayor-jean-quan-in-big-trouble-after-riot/Prior to OWS there was a recall effort underway.
If anyone wonders whether the protesters in Oakland are being deliberately and wantonly targeted by the police, without regard to public safety or potential loss of life, here is a photo of a protester who was hit in the head by a tear gas canister.
The wounded man is Scott Olsen, a Marine vet of the Iraq war.

Here is what went down when he was injured by the canister and some bystanders tried to assist him as he lay on the ground bleeding.
OS,
Great video clip! It is amazing what the corporatists will do to hang on to their precious tax credits and reduced taxes.
Lotta,
Thanks for reminding us of the nonsense behind the Al Gore comment that was a humorous statement on his part that the Republicans abused.
Ben, excellent info re: who owns the cops. It’s pretty obvious that they’re there to protect and serve the highest bidder.
I can’t copy from the Snopes page on the Al Gore observation but the to the query that Gore said he invented the Internet the statement is “false”. He was a supporter of the the Internet for decades (since the 80’s) when few outside of academia and the military had heard of it and sponsored the 1988 National High-Performance Computer Act and co-sponsored the Information Infrastructure and Technology Act of 1992. These Acts are crucial to the intertubes being what they are today. He is a digital hero of the political variety.

http://powerwall.msnbc.msn.com/politics/the-rights-failed-protest-smear-1705507.story The anti-defamation league finds nothing to be alarmed about.
Ben looking at the time stamps of your post methinks you probably should get some rest. Sleep much ? or is your sleeping habits like your thinking, backwards 🙂
The OWS folks are having to be on the lookout for provocateurs. One of the origins of the anti-Semitic urban rumor was one guy holding an anti-Semitic sign. The latest was when Evan Coyne Maloney, a right-wing blogger, was caught handing out rolling papers and bongs in Zucotti Park yesterday. When he was confronted by filmmaker Joey Boots, he said he was doing it “because I am a nice guy.” The protesters surrounded Maloney and gave him and his behavior a few minutes of unwanted attention.
Don’t you love the smell of schadenfreude in the morning?
Here is the video made by Joey Boots. Evan Coyne Maloney is the guy in shades and dark shirt.
