Thirteen Percent: Congress Is Now More Unpopular Than A Communist Takeover

Well, Congress still beats out intestinal blockages in popularity. The latest Gallup monthly survey shows that Congress is now only viewed favorable by 13 percent of American. Other polls show it as 9 percent. This makes it less popular (as shown in the chart in the article below) than Hugo Chavez and communism taking over the United States. Hell, even Paris Hilton is more popular than Congress.

What I find incredible is that we still do not have a third party when virtually everyone agrees that our political system is a disaster. Yet, we continue to replicate the same failed leadership in both parties. I remain utterly shocked that the Democrats retained Nancy Pelosi as their leader after she contributed to one of the greatest losses of her party in history. She remains a polarizing figure for many.

I was particularly annoyed to see her recently on John Stewart’s show joking about how unpopular Congress is and saying that it was less unpopular under Democrats (though she cites a 40 percent approval rate which was the high point during her tenure and later contested by reporters). There is no indication that she views her own actions as in anyway contributing to this disaster despite criticism of leadership from continuing corrupt practices like congressional junkets to failing to implement reforms of Congress. What is striking is that neither Republicans nor Democrats appear to have the ability of self-criticism of their leadership while hating the current situation. Partisans continue to attack the other party while coming up for endless excuses for their own disastrous leadership.

We have two parties which have become effectively brain dead. Yet we have a political system that appears incapable of challenging the monopoly of the two parties even in the face of utter failure. What does this have to say about the assumption that we have a democratic process responsive to public demands? We appear more of an oligarchy that maintains a pretense of a democracy.

  1. Perry may have forgotten the old adage, “Be careful what you pray for; you might just get it.”

  2. SwM,

I’m having a good laugh now … the Orange Man got a complete pass … typical rhetoric from the club on the hill

  3. Blouise, If she comes back, we will have the last laugh and you will be able to resume sending your mail. She needs 25 seats.

  4. SwM,

I kept writing to Pelosi telling her to get that budget passed but my mail kept coming back informing me Pelosi was no longer the leader of the House … to address my comments to somebody else … but who?

  5. Now if the other 87% vote the bums out,then we will have accomplished something but as Frankly says;

“But if you poll them about their Congrescritter they will tell you they like that one a lot.”

  6. typo … 2 should be 1+ and Boehner should be “fill in the blank with anyone other than Boehner like, say, oh … Pelosi”

  7. Pelosi has been out for 2 years … who is in right now … you know, when the poll was actually done … gee, golly gosh … it’s Boehner … but how could it be some one other than Pelosi’s fault … let’s just play hush, hush and not mention the Orange man … nobody will notice ….

  8. Thousands of protesters are marching on Wall Street this morning. They have the intent of shutting down the financial district with a sea of bodies. Bloomberg made a major tactical error by trying to intimidate the press and arresting reporters. Witnesses on site are saying they have never seen so many reporters and camera crews. Police are telling the OWS protesters they cannot march because they don’t have a parade permit. The OWS crowd is shouting back they are not having a parade, it is a protest.

Police have parked vans on the sidewalks to try and block sidewalk traffic. The crowd appears to be flowing around police barricades like water around rocks. There are not enough officers and way too many video cameras for them to get away with some of the stuff they pulled in Zuccotti park last night.

  9. The approval rating is much lower under Boehner than Pelosi. Obama’s approval rating stays in the forties. Think we would need a third and a fourth party. Can’t see “a” third party as a big tent for all that are dissatisfied. The “99%” do not agree on many issues such as war, the environment, and women’s rights.

  10. “Well, Congress still beats out intestinal blockages in popularity.”

How could anyone tell the difference at this point?

  11. When the republicans took over the House in 2010, the Texas republicans were placed in powerful leadership positions. The republican leadership members in my area, Pete Sessions and Jeb Hensarling, look to be shoe-ins. I did see anti- Pelosi yard signs in republican yards in 2010. Who knows maybe some districts will swing again and Pelosi will make a comeback.

  12. “What I find incredible is that we still do not have a third party when virtually everyone agrees that our political system is a disaster.”

Not so incredible when one considers the fact that the Repocrats control the qualification process at the state level.

  13. But if you poll them about their Congrescritter they will tell you they like that one a lot.

This is the first time since the 1850’s that a Congress has worked against the better interest of the country. This Congress is actively trying to torpedo the economy while obliterating the social safety net that build stability for 70 years.
