We have another case of a teacher who has been suspended or fired because of conduct in their private lives. Kevin Hogan teaches English and crew at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School, a highly rated high school, in Malden, Massachusetts. That was before someone told the school that he has appeared in pornographic movies like “Just Gone Gay 8” under the name Hytch Cawke
We have previously seen teachers (here, England, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here), here, here, students (here and here) and other public employees (here and here and here) fired for their private speech or conduct, including school employees fired for posing in magazines (here), appearing on television shows in bikinis (here), or having a prior career in the adult entertainment industry (here). I have been highly critical of this growing trend as an attack on free speech, privacy, and the right of association.
Hogan has worked at the school since September and chairs the high school’s English department. Hytch Cawke performed in movies like “Fetish World,” and “Just Gone Gay 8.” One such film features his character answering an ad to have sex for money.
The school system appears to presuppose that, if true, Hogan should be fired. It released a statement that “We value the health and safety of our students” and “We expect teachers to hold a very high moral standard. They are role models for students.”
Hogan appears to have been a highly successful teacher who was popular with both parents and students. He had a prior career in a lawful, if controversial, industry. The question is whether a teacher can be barred for lawful conduct or must, in both his prior career and current private life, follow the moral dictates of the majority. The District admits that Hogan’s reference and record was “flawless” so it is merely the objections of parents to his private conduct.
What is interesting is whether another type of actor would be subject to termination. For example, would Maria Schneider be barred due to her scenes with Marlon Brando in the 1972 film Last Tango in Paris? How about Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal for their performances as gay cowboys in Brokeback Mountain? The question is where to draw the line. The alternative is to make it clear to students and parents that teachers cannot be fired for lawful conduct, including professional activities or political speech, outside of school.
If not, the moral standard referenced by the District would need some definition to put teachers on notice. It cannot follow the same test used by the Supreme Court that “we know it when we see it.”

Ya think he’s too old to be a page…. Oh yeah… They’ve gone it electronic wieners….
It appears there is more to the story. Mike Beaudet, an “undercover reporter” for Fox 25, did an ambush interview on Mr. Hogan that outed him for his past. The kids have started a campaign to get Beaudet fired and rehire Hogan.

Lessee, ambush interview. Fox News. Willing to ruin someone’s life and career for ratings. Where have we heard of this kind of thing before?
Kingsfield….WELCOME the one thing this blog was missing was an expert on Gay fetish films…Now I know who to check with before I rent any of them
Rafflaw, sadly, yes.
Carol,
Skeebo isn’t concerned with the facts.
wonder who outed him?
and tomdarch i’m with you on that. an english teacher should have been able to come up with a better porn name.
Sorry. I meant to say I guess he has no other choice but to return to his “unrespectable” job.
So since he was fired from his “respectable” job, I guess he has no other choice but to his “unrepsectable” job. Stupid. Of course the person who watched the porn and recognized him was “respectable” enough to alert administrators. Again, stupid. And God forbid when his students watch porn they would recognize him. Most stupid. Why was this guy fired again?
How about firing him as an English teacher because he couldn’t come up with a better Nom de Schtup than “Hytch Cawke”? Really?
So much for working one’s way through college. So much for taking a job that pays, rather than sponging off relatives.
Look, Ass Fucked by a Dilf 2 and Just Gone Gay 8 are no reason to fire Hogan, but Brando should have been fired as a High School teacher after Island of Dr. Moreau, and similarly, so should Hogan after Fetish World 1. He was stiff, unbelievable, and mostly just mumbled his lines.
OS. yep.
Skeebo, did you get this from Ann coulter: “As Stan Evans says, whatever liberals disapprove of, they want banned (smoking, guns, practicing Christianity, ROTC, the Pledge of Allegiance) and whatever they approve of, they make mandatory (abortion-on-demand, gay marriage, pornography, condom distribution in public schools, screenings of “An Inconvenient Truth”). “http://www.anncoulter.com/cgi-local/printer_friendly.cgi?article=374 ) ?
I ofund one school in Mass who does noit allow the pledge. Google search after google search found othing about “most Mass. schools forbidding ROTC, pledge and christianity.” Do you have a click to back this up?
I can’t imagine how this is constitutional. How can someone work in a legal profession and be fired from a job because of it?
OS,
you are right!
Since it was an alias, could they even have proven it?
I want the name(s) of the parent(s) who did the research … no play-dates with their kids ’cause who knows what sort of “research” might pop up on their TV screens … pun intended.
and … what OS said.
Let’s see the Pledge of Allegiance, ROTC and Christmas are offensive and are forbidden in most Massachusetts schools because it may be offensive to someone, but having a porn star teacher is not offensive to anyone? How funny it is to see the blatant hypocrisy of the left in this country….always claiming everyone should be tolerant yet never being tolerant themselves.
Harvard banned ROTC from its campus until DODT was repealed. Don’t make it sound like it was a public school initiative. The pledge ban attempt was also a small local effort. The entire first page of a Google search for your Christmas allegation wall filled with right-wing blogs and no news-worthy items, so I think that point doesn’t even bear notice.
Having said that, should a teacher show up at school as a porn star trying to teach our kids his porn-star ways, then I’m fairly certain that he would be shown the door. I’m also positive that we heathen liberals would not object to such a showing of the door.

I think I would rather have Mr. Hogan teaching my kids than former Philadelphia schools superintendent Arlene Ackerman.
“One such film features his character answering an ad to have sex for money.”
Because, when their students watch porn, they want any teachers involved to set a good example. Would it have been okay if his character had said, “Whoa. That’s way wrong.”?
I have no opinion on the porn industry, but I think that it is distant enough from the educational system for students to remain oblivious to it – that is, until Sean Hannity describes it in detail for his Fox News viewers.
It’s like the Ivory Snow lady. People (like me) who didn’t watch porn wouldn’t have known her, and people who did watch porn wouldn’t have cared one way or the other about it.
Based on the picture of Mr. Hogan, I think it safe to assume that discipline in class would not be an issue.
