Just when you thought it was creepy for people to stuff their dead pets, Dutch artist Bart Jansen has done one better: skinning his pet cat Orville and turning it into a helicopter. The video shows cows are unnerved by the sight . . . and they are not alone. The Borg Feline is enough to send most people looking for shelter.
Jansen noted that “Oh how he loved birds. He will receive more powerful engines and larger props for his birthday.” I imagine the birds are not delighted to see the new robo-cat with enhanced engines.
Jansen says that it is merely another expression of his artistic eye. However, shortly after this video, Jansen’s dog Wilbur ran away. (Ok, I made up the last part.)
I tried to reach the Jensen home for comment but received this message:

Art is in the eyes of the flyer…..
Dredd,
I still prefer to expose the politicians with polygraph testing before auto-da-fés on the Mall, the WashDC one.
As for faking it, naw, let’s see how crappy the Dutch are.
Was just an imitation of an American “´man bites cat”- tale. Amateurish. Geeky. Boys’ pranks in grown men.
No lead-up with kitty still alive and purring with taxidermist standing by with hypodermic raised on high. Feeling queasy? That would be the genuine American way.
Who knows, maybe it was JT’s way of letting us try our skills in propaganda detection, or our inner borders. Who buys that?
Dredd, try the Jains. they wear masks to avoid inhaling and killing gnats. They don’t sweep before themselves, they levitate instead. Can you?
Blouise, et al: The trials of having an empathetic heart, or…?
Dredd,
Do Not Go to that “dictionary”! That will get us to a worse place than that cat!
no video for me either.
I did watch the Borg video … it represents what the 1% would be if they were machines as defined in the dictionary Gene H was given by … never mind.

I decided to read the comments before viewing the video. No video for me. I’ll sit this one out.

Same here. I rescue animals and am a wannabe Buddhist in the sense of not “hurting a fly” …
I too had to fake it on this one … they think I watched it!

I think I get it now. Was looking for a quick answer and grabbed at Dredds and went on from there.
I think (?) JT means:
1) Here is an example of how sick we (some) are.
2) The telephone answering machine suggests why we are so sick; the borgs have taken absorbed us.
3) Or he is gently pulling our legs to wake us up?
4) How many dolls are there inside this one?
=================================
We need to evolve into a state where we make those kinds of helicopters out of politicians … that is if we want to become fit enough to survive.

What is the name of that reaction a person has when they laugh at something while being repulsed by it simultaneously?
– – – – – – – – – – – – –
Conflicted drooling.
OK, the feli-copter is stoopid but the shirt on that guy is a crime against nature!
lotta,
Depends on if the cutout is one of your mom, now deceased. Same-same.

Hovercat (and its predecessor Monorail Cat) are long-time (for a website) memes found on the below site. Maybe the penchant for cross-pollination between mediums (song to video to movie to action figures to video-game to movie to Internet meme to art installation to merchandise, repeat endlessly) has just reached some kind of weird critical mass:
http://icanhascheezburger.com/?s=hovercat
Um, yes, I’m obsessing over this blawg posting and haven’t even been able to read the rest of today’s entries yet- now I have to go run errands before rush hour. I don’t know if I should thank or curse the Professor for adding a bit of, or hook for, obsession to my daily Internet surfing, LOL.
What is the name of that reaction a person has when they laugh at something while being repulsed by it simultaneously? I don’t think it’s cognitive dissonance but I might be wrong about that. The film was mesmerizingly awful.
He had the kitty stuffed before he used its pelt as a helicopter. How many people are grossed out bey that or find stuffing a dead pet disgusting? It’s done, along with freeze drying them. Stuffed and mounted game trophies are OK with millions of people. Stuffed and mounted animal exhibits were (is?) the norm for museums, how gross is that? Plastinated dead human bodies touring the world to sell-out crowds (with the spectre of the dead bodies being produced to order in China) is sold as educational- how gross is that? The bone shards of Saints and Martyrs trotted out on special occasions and tours of the skeleton laden catacombs as a tourist attraction- how gross is that?
What makes some of these things things OK and some not? A distance in time or species? A connection with cats as companion animals? A false compartmentalization of some creatures as less valuable than others making their killing for sport OK and (from time immemorial) symbolic of our power or value as good providers? That there are ‘good’ ways to memorialize a dead pet and not so good ways based on the level of “respect” given the corpse.
Would this man be less reviled if he ran through a field holding his dead, stuffed cat above his head because the cat, in life, “loved the birds”? Or would he just be a harmless eccentric and that’s OK?
I don’t know. It’s all very weird to me but it does dredge up questions I’m not all that comfortable with about how we as a culture think and act and that’s before I even get to factory farming animals for food.
I don’t think the Professor did the blawg a disservice by posting it, it’s right up his alley, there’s more in that video than immediately meets the eye, in many ways it’s a mirror and maybe that is the point.
*******
Dredd, I “lost it” too, with the cows being chased. I don’t know what you meant exactly by “lost it” but I had to laugh while muttering “Jesus fucking Christ!”.
People cutouts = totally cool, dead pets = maybe not so much:
She got the apartment. He got the cat and his helícopter. Lucky she did not have him neutered. Who? The helicopter owner? Of course, the cat already was.
Yeah, happens to us all. just shows that gods go to the toilet like we do. Can you imagine a god who would have an appearance like ours, and then let it be written that he endorsed the doctrine?
But, actually, let’s face it folks, you are all living in a madhouse run by Nurse Ratchett over there, and we here are in subsidiary clinics.
So when you been fighting it as long as JT has, playing doctor to a sick form of government, then occasional aberrative behaviour is likely to happen, as efforts to resist madness.
Or is he the cold Professor, holding up an example, saying: Avoid the abyss, gentlemen.
The Dutchmen are as they always are and have been. Logical and tolerant to all forms of diversion.
Even kicking their pets after death is OK with them.
The guy hated his cat, it really was his ex-wifes’s cat.
JT lost it.
It happens to all of us …
… who frequent this blog. 😉
I read your blog because it is usually informative, often entertaining and frequently both. This feature, however, clearly qualifies as “none of the above”. Giving this psychopath attention for turning his dead cat into the latest edition of “Corpses as art” may be “news” to some, but I find it offensive and well beneath the normal standard of journalism I expect from your blog. Please don’t do it again!
Yep.
There is art and there is mere morbid sadism.
This is not an example of the former.
Sick bastard.
