This afternoon, the blog passed 12,000,000 all-time hits. While still smaller than some of other sites in the top ten legal blogs, we just passed 11,000,000 not long ago and we have continued to grow. I am very proud of our community and our attempt to offer a place for civil and responsible conversation. I encourage our regulars and visitors to continue to avoid the personal attacks and name calling common elsewhere on the Internet.
The continued growth of the site shows that our approach to blogging resonates with a good number of people. I continue to be concerned in reading comments that take personal shots and use insulting language. I hope that the recent debate over civility in legal blogging will reaffirm the need of our regulars to avoid insults and personal jabs. If you do not like a person’s take on a story, there is no need to characterize the writer or the writer’s motivations. Let’s deal with the ideas and leave the ad hominem attacks to other sites.
Thanks again for making the site such a great success.

I would hope so.

Dredd: I certainly didn’t mean to imply it was you. I don’t have a clue on why the first comment is missing or why this looks different from the taunting email that I received. That email showed my picture in the corner as if I posted it. I am not even sure what was supposed to be accomplished by the sham comment. I am just concerned about the practice which is remarkably obnoxious to assume another person’s identity in this fashion.

Is that you this time JT? 😉
I am a little “gun shy” at the moment.
I can tell you that I have cracked “Fairlight” on other blogs, and been jumped on for so doing.
What I mean is I detected the very infamous hacking team “Fairlight”, and traced them back to where they came from, and where they went (controlling positions in the republican party in California, and rubbing elbows with judges and DoD officials in D.C.) … permit me to share this link on my blog (Link).
Read the comments, basically between me and bloggers who were on the site I frequented.
BTW, I still post on that site, and there is no untoward animosity between us.
There are sophisticated hackers that can do many things. I have offered on my blog a free book, The Cuckoo’s Egg that chronicles one classic example.
A young hippie detected a spy who was “having his way” with the entire defense establishment of the U.S., and was undetected.
He was awarded the medal of freedom, after having very narrowly escaped federal prison because of the myth “it can’t happen here.”
Anyway, they best hackers have not been involved in the current episode, because they are “never” (99.9% of the time) detected.
Again, cheers.
“I was just sent an email showing someone commenting under my name and congratulating myself. I am not sure how that can happen[.]”
Transporter mishap?
Here we are again: Nothing attracts like civility or lack thereof.
Prof. JT says thought that his message from the swim meet had not reached us and is doing a repeat. Or else he is kicking the dying fire in the fireplace to
see if it will blaze up again. Which?
Good call Anonymously Yours. It was stupid of me not to check the trash. It appears that the responsible person trashed the comments shortly after posting it. I fail to understand why people do through such trouble to be obnoxious but then again the Internet seems to empower such individuals.
Regarding the photograph: It is quite easy to right click on a photo and copy it, then paste into some other Gravitar, post or comment. Not ethical or moral, but some people are apparently willing to do it.
I was thinking about this. I don’t understand the technology of it, but at one time I began to receive e-mails in my PERSONAL e-mail that appeared to come from ME — but they didn’t. Nobody could explain it to me.
Dredd, I think is too nice of a guy to post under anyone else’s moniker…… I think it was as stated above…. Check your trash pile in WordPress…. Unless it was deleted there as well….
Good deal….. Thank goodness this is still ad free…..

I was just sent an email showing someone commenting under my name and congratulating myself. I am not sure how that can happen though we have had a hacking problem in the past. Dredd shows that response at jonathanturley 1, June 27, 2012 at 2:48 pm. I am not sure if this is a joke but it is not very funny. I can’t find the original posting by the faux Jonathan Turley, however, in the comments. I just see Dredd’s response to it. Anyone have any suggestions?

I thought it was you JT.
Your humor sometimes neutralizes everything for a time, like mine does sometimes.
No offense intended.
In the NFL it is a time-worn reality that those who respond to a personal foul will receive the punishment (not the one who instigated the problem).
In other words, a lineman punches someone in the back of the head, then that someone responds by punching that lineman …
Because of the “speed” of referees, they tend to see only the response, not the original infraction, and therefore penalize the one who responded to an attack.
Don’t go there.
You tend to rely on the goodness of people, which is admirable and good, but which is going to become extinct as civility becomes extinct.
Wake up people, for heaven sake last year we had victim football teams, the New Orleans Saints (whose city has 400,000 fewer people than they had before Katrina) doing predatory hits designed to specifically seriously injure other players on competing teams.
The coaches became mafia life operatives who paid huge sums to their team to assault and hurt players on other teams.
Can you see that we are not a nice nation anymore, and it is getting seriously worse?
And your blog is exceptional, everyone on it sacrosanct?
If you continue to have an ad hoc approach, like out legal system has, informed alone by your own cronies here, some of which are serious bullies, serious sociopaths, the you can expect non-civility.
And if you make a perfect system, you can also expect non-civility.
It is not about you, it is about what is happening around you, it is about being in a place that is degenerating.
I have watched you on TV, and probably every show on which you appeared, especially Keith, and 99.9% of the time happen to be in accord with your perspective.
But you and I are going to become extinct if this degeneration into a place America has never been before continues.
Make a rule that the first person to gets ad hominem on any thread, or something close to that, gets booted for three days.
No matter how long they have been here.
That won’t solve it, but it is like slowing down when you are running out of gas … it will get you further along that going full speed.
Cheers.

Wasn’t me.
I can see Dredd’s response, but do not see any parent comment under your name either. I have an aversion to people posting comments under sockpuppet names, unless it is clearly snark and the person identifies him or herself. Fresh out of suggestions, but I really do not like some of the comments despite requests for civility.
Prof,
Was anyone else signed in working on a draft or something? I know in the past, several of the GB’s have accidentally commented when signed in and it showed up as you, but we’ve always gone back and corrected it. Occam’s Razor would suggest that’s the likely cause given both the nature of the posting and its disappearance. Did you check in the trash file?
I received an email showing me commenting on this thread. The email read: “See last page of attached.
Good reason for one of the guest bloggers to be logged in as you? Or is one (or more) interested in finding out information that most think is private?
Come on, Jonathan. I don’t think you’re that stupid. Your calls for civility are as one-sided as the posts made by your guest bloggers. You have the nerve to turn over the private information left my a multitude of anonymous bloggers to your band of liberals and then want to stand on the sidelines and shout “But I’m not a liberal!”. -bullshit!
You have displayed your partisan bent, you just aren’t man enough to own it.?”
I would love to be able to find out who is responsible if someone has been able to hack into the system.

I know, well, there is a fine line between comedy and tragedy. 🙁

Because of my guest blogger Position I work hard to welcome new people. However, some new people come in attacking and I do attack back. I must admit that here are certain red flags to me. This has nothing to do with ideolivy, but is all about how someone presents themselves. When JT for instance is attackedhttp://jonathanturley.org/2012/05/16/the-gods-are-angry-merkel-insists-lightning-strike-on-hollandes-plan-was-a-good-omen/#more-48984 as a liberal ideologue I take umbrage because t is an attack based on lies. Civility of approac, breeds civility of response.
Maybe it’s not my place since I am not a constant presence here but on a page that is a heralding an accomplishment it is amazing that it has degenerated into uncivility despite the thread and requests from the prof on the civility post thread.
Gene, if I thought this thread was the time and place to demand your ouster, I would come right out and say that using my name, anon, and not hide under one of Otteray Scribe’s sockpuppets.
However, I believe all the time you spend here saves your clients from you, so I would be the last person to interfere with that bit of social good.
