12,000,000

This afternoon, the blog passed 12,000,000 all-time hits. While still smaller than some of other sites in the top ten legal blogs, we just passed 11,000,000 not long ago and we have continued to grow. I am very proud of our community and our attempt to offer a place for civil and responsible conversation. I encourage our regulars and visitors to continue to avoid the personal attacks and name calling common elsewhere on the Internet.

The continued growth of the site shows that our approach to blogging resonates with a good number of people. I continue to be concerned in reading comments that take personal shots and use insulting language. I hope that the recent debate over civility in legal blogging will reaffirm the need of our regulars to avoid insults and personal jabs. If you do not like a person’s take on a story, there is no need to characterize the writer or the writer’s motivations. Let’s deal with the ideas and leave the ad hominem attacks to other sites.

Thanks again for making the site such a great success.

Here are the list of countries represented by viewers and commentators on the blog with the first being obviously the most prevalent:

  1. No need to peek at anything. Your writing style and choice of topics is painfully consistent.

  2. The short time that I have frequented this blog is quite longer than any other I’ve been a part of — because of the civility and the mix of the frivolous and absurd aspects of the law along with its weighty and serious issues. I also enjoy the totally non-legal related matters — such as the present conversation re quantum mechanics and the beginning of everything (or not) — that nonetheless spices up our discourse and stretches our mental capacities.

It’s fun being here. There are good folks here. Most of them a lot smarter and better informed/educated/trained than I. It’s easy to be civil here and not because it is expected. And if I’m not, one these smarter and better informed/educated/trained folks is going to hand me my ass on a platter.

  3. Congratulations Professor! You have created a wonderful space.

  4. Dredd,

The Bible is just full of witty one liners if you know where to look.

That’s your ill informed opinion and you’re entitled to it. Too bad you’re totally powerless here, anon. If you don’t like this playground, there are plenty of other options for you to choose from.

If you don’t like that you’ve been proven wrong on several occasions and that your insults are answered in kind, I suggest you learn to know what you’re talking about before speaking and keep a civil tongue in your mouth. I’m as nice to people as they are to me – disagreement has nothing to do with it. If that presents a problem for you – my following the Golden Rule – I suggest that it is your problem and yours to correct.

Your persistent campaign against me and other guest bloggers is a waste of time and as much of an impairment to civility as the constant ridicule you invite upon yourself.

  8. If you want civility on this blog and have the same standards, then a couple of things need to happen. The first and formost is the vintage Buddha needs to be publicaly flogged; and Gene H., need to be permanently eliminated as a guest blogger. His posts seem to be more disruptive than any of the others. By eliminating Gene, not only do you raise the standards but, have the hopes of some civility. He is your biggest liability in this arena.

    Congratulations professor,
Henman you and I are about even ((*_*)) and ): compared to the prof.

  10. Congratulations on the continued success and growth of the site. Well deserved. The smart and witty discourse here is one of the reasons I keep coming back. However, I remember a sign at the edge of a town where I used to live. The sign had been erected by the local Chamber of Commerce, where somebody obviously had a sense of humor. It said: “This is a progressive community of ‘X-thousand’ fine people and two soreheads.” How prescient, foretelling the future of the blogosphere.

  11. Professor,
Where do you come off telling us not to call each other names? You’re obviously trying to abridge my First Amendment rights to pontificate about everyone else’s intelligence, moral stature, genital-configuration-semblance and political perspicacity. I won’t tolerate this much longer, Sir! I am going to have to stand my ground at you… 🙂

  12. I read the first post reply and already my face is in my hands in dismay. Can we start over now?

  13. Adhere to the rule “don’t start no sh*t and there won’t be any sh*t” … it works.

Once you jump on someone, which happens here incessantly by regulars and ghosts, you gonna start some sh*t and there will be some sh*t.

    Natch.
