Happy Independence Day!!!

Happy Birthday America. Once again, we gather to celebrate tossing out that preening, prancing Hanover prig George III.

With our electricity back, all is right again with the world and we are ready to do our annual fireworks display at the end of the block.

If the rain does not wash us out, we will be grilling up a story tonight and toasting to the demise of King Georgie.

I truly love this holiday. The fireworks, the patriotic themes, and the sense of unity that it brings.

Happy Fourth Everyone!

  1. BettyKath,

Good fishing of building plans. That was more revealing than anything in months….follow the money works even when it is the Pentagon spending. Drawback. Forget it.

Family get to gethers are right, they’ve been so for a million years. That is one major way we differ from other mammals, mainly because of our longer maturation time. And, in spite of our mistakes, our ability to cooperate and/or negotiate.

But you know all this. Am just using you to volley with. Do the same.

All others are encouraged to kiss the person nearest you, and then go round the circle. Agape, it is greek but understood by all. Those in bars will be surprised by what happens then.

  2. Oro,

There are only two national holidays I cut slack on the propaganda department and that’s this one, because I don’t celebrate it in honor of what we are – which could easily veer into jingoistic nonsense – but rather I mark the day for what we could be under the DOI and Constitution (an observance of aspiration if you will) and Veteran’s Day (simply because they deserve it – ‘Nuff said).

  3. We have the largest embassy in Iraq and now our latest permanent military outpost. Unless you really believe it will be only for the Afghanistan military. Don’t expect the troops to come home. No money for anything but the military.

    Washington building ‘Pentagon’ in Kabul

    KABUL

The United States is spending $92 million to build Afghanistan a new “Pentagon,” a massive five-story military headquarters with domed roofs and a high-tech basement command in the capital of Kabul.

“Once it’s finished, it will be a permanent and a very significant illustration of the United State’s support for Afghanistan,” Afghan Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak said in an interview, the Washington Post reported.

The United States is still working its way through a $10 billion menu of construction projects aimed at bolstering the Afghan security forces. Of the 1,150 buildings planned, more than 600 have been completed, with a total value of $4 billion.

In addition to new headquarters for the Defense Ministry, the United States is building headquarters in Kabul for the Interior Ministry, which oversees the Afghan police, at a price tag of $54 million. They are also building a $102 million base for the military’s 201st Corps in eastern Afghanistan.

  4. I’m firing up the grill right now, margarita in hand and wishing every a happy Independance Day with your loved ones and friends.

    Dredd,

You in your blog linked above state succinctly what I tried to express in my comment above about our sins.
    —————
    I quote:
“The preaching, teaching, and practices of the bully religion are highlighted by annual holy days that exalt imperialistic militarism, the operative and ultimate foundation of bully worship.

Can you think of any of those holy days now called holidays?”
    ——————–

Independence day is one of those holidays when we should do penance, IMHO.
    ======================================
True. The 99% have 1% penance to do, the 1% have 99% penance to do.

Fuzzy math I know, but it tells a more accurate story under our national historical circumstances.

For several generations past and future, at least.

  6. 707, I hear you. I don’t do holidays. The family get togethers are good but I’m uncomfortable with the nationalism. Hendrix Star Spangled Banner is only rendition I like – bombs, taps. It jangles my nerves, as does war.

Holy Hannah Dredd, 200 out of 19,000?????!!!!!!

    that is a stunning failure….

Yeah, not my numbers, just my reporting.

Citizen journalists must keep on keeping on.

  9. Gene —

You ought to have a propaganda field day with this thread.

  10. Junctionshamus,

What are you using to view the clip with?
Says RTSP protocol. Windows doesn’t do it, and the download file sources on the net are unknown to me. Forget it if too much trouble.

Sounds like you are a UNIX nerd or ???? SMILE

Now I see, came onto a page at Youtube selected for mobile (ie cell). Clicking on desktop alternative fixed that problem.

These systems get smarter and smarter. We’ll be computer illiterate one year after college. Or our grandchildren will be supporting the family on their programming skills, etc. Want to bet?

In this case it was srupid, needing selection help from me.
You tube should have cookies which identify my configuration, etc and fix it all for me. Bad UI.

  12. Junctionshamus,

Thank you. I immediately thought of Jimi on hearing Lai Y.

Jimi’s sarcasm was so beautifully done, I say this not yet having listened to your clip.
I remember well his injection of machine gun bursts in the song, not overdriven, subtle—as he was a master of being. Who knows, someone might have fixed his fix. A shame, we need that kind.

And now our soldiers are committing suicide here at home. Can’t we arrange recuperation at marijuana camps as the Israeli soldiers do in southern India. Might save a few.

    Collateral damage says the Pentagon.

Back at ya…..and was the DOI really signed on the 2nd of July……
    ============================================
Yes, but that was before scheduling was invented.

  14. Too bad the majority of people on the Earth don’t know about the fourth restatement that was created sometime near or in conjunction with the Fourth of July.

Many states have had to outlaw fireworks because of firecracker climate change, but we can still watch it on the tele.

I have been watching a program that says bombs bursting in air evolved into freedom before our very eyes while saints prayed.

  15. Here comes “Bitter Pierce” 707 riding on his “freedom of speech” horse. While we should indeed commemorate our start as a nation, I would feel the day better spent in doing penance.
Penance for our nation’s sins and our support for them.

The posting of Lai Y from Laos playing of our anthem was to me a reminder that we, yes WE, dumped more bombs on Laos than in Vietnam. And most of it in secret. So there we have an out.

But our lack of independence in steering our country, and it is mine too, is nothing to be proud of, but rather to sorrow on this day.

The airbase I designed in Thailand, U Tapao, is still a secret USA strategic facility. So my slate is not clean either.

So, nice day. maybe this is instead the day to forget our nations sins.

I could suggest grimmer ways to celebrate but with respect to those here, I won’t. One involves live pigs and napalm.
That should suffice to inform you, and the parallel is obvious. They were not pigs.
