French runner Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad achieved a new low for athletes this week when he slapped and then shoved a mascot costume after he won the 3,000m steeplechase in Helsinki. His attack on “Appy” and the 14-year-old girl inside has left people outraged around the world.
The 27-year-old runner had just won the 3,000-meter steeplechase race at the European Athletic Championships when he was approached by the girl in the “Appy” outfit. She attempted to give him a gift bag. He first knocked it out of her hand and then shoved her.
Now here’s the truly bizarre part. In 2010, Mekhissi-Benabbad reportedly had another incident with a mascot at the 2010 European Athletic Championships in Barcelona. He supposedly asked a mascot to kneel before him before pushing it over. He was also suspended for 10 months last year after getting into a fight with another French runner.
He obviously has a major behavioral and civility problem. What should the punishment be for such an athlete. I would not take away the victory but I would suspend him, again, for his conduct. In this case, he assaulted a child working for the event and acted in the most unsportsmanlike way. Given his history, a long suspension would appear justified. However, what do you think about negating the win since the attack occurred at the very end of the race?

Thank you for providing the most retarded quote of the week. Do you even realize how stupid your statement is?
Re: The French runner and the stats, consequences, etc.
========================================================
First Thought—-Must we wait 10 years for such notable “culture events”?
Second Thought—-We have now a virtual collective memory in Internet, a village pump (of our cultural lifesblood, debating salon, etc.etc
Third thught—-who dares not be au courant on the latest in their respective subculture, even “mainstream” being one branch thereof? Daily exams are held in your “hipness”
Fourth thought—-What will be the resultant evolution which wiil be “successful” ie fittest, in response to this new environmental factor?
What will be the fate of the fact and stat seeker. Will he be eradicated by his fellows, his services no longer needed? Or will he be haussed to thh pinnacle of the hierarchy?
ElaineM., your fate awaits you. Yours too, Henman.
if i had a name like that and had to run around in short shorts like he does i’d have anger issues too.
I forgot about it raff…. Wow….
HenMan,
I remember that sausage attack!
This is clearly the most dastardly attack since the 2003 attack by Pittsburgh Pirates’ first baseman Randall Simon against the Italian Sausage in the Sausage Race at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

With a view to that phenomenon, and linking it to the House of Reps. performance, I wonder if most of the Republican reps are from “heat states”?
We don’t call them Sunshine States anymore. The
legislatures have passed laws defining that “misnomer” a slanderous utterance.
Some PR consult told then that it would get them more snowbirds.
This runner is off his rocker.
Of course, what he did was a crime, even under French law, I hope.
He should be prosecuted just like anybody else who chose to assault and batter someone who did not first attack him.
My real question, though, is what was heard/recorded before he struck. Maybe the Mascot went up and said to him, f’rinstance, “You got a problem, Homie?” Then what he did was obviously just self-defense.
People in DC who still deny “climate change” are the result of a recently identified phenomenon called “Overheated-Brain-Ventrication-Interfering-with-Observing-Underlying-Situations” — it should be studied but so far, no funding.
Woosty,
I feel for you folks. I have difficulty handling 80 degrees. My niece in NC has had 105 for for five straight days. And 95 is promised.
Will this have any effect on the nation as you see it. Climate change?
Nice of you to think of the wildlife. The 45 days of rain here have helped the usually dry summer. Even if vacations suffered.
Do they still advertize sunny vacations anymore?
Blouise is enjoying her trip I believe. Shame no mountains in FLA. Or?
Have a good one.
I think he should have to wear a mascot outfit while all the mascot folks abuse him. Then he needs to be suspended, fined (funds going to the mascot) and get psychiatric care (and prove it).
Reading this post right after the one about the pilot, makes me think this runner has had too many breakdowns.
Needs something, maybe a rest in a quiet peaceful ‘home’ for a bit would help (& maybe after he serves his term for the a&s suggested by Bettykath and Bettenoir.)
What bettykath said. A few weeks in jail, followed by anger management classes, might be indicated.
Id707, I’m home for the day as will be many here in the States….it’s sweltering hot, fireworks have been cancelled in many places due to ongoing fires, danger of more fires in the dryness and heatwave and ongoing loss of electricity for many in the Southeast due to freak storms and such… So I will be watering local plants and wildlife and enjoying the day with old Patriotic movies…Yankee Doodle Dandy comes to mind….
Besides being a really bad sport, Isn’t that battery? I agree with Josie. No one on the track is safe when he’s there.
The guy is obviously a real jerk; an @$$hole. Isn’t there some kind of rules of conduct for olympic level sports? I say make it hurt and take away the win and suspend him for a good long while. He needs a wake up call.
Or put him in the ring with a flyweight boxer who can tune him up! He’s probably just a typical bully.
I think they should take away his win and bar him from further competition. If he wants to hit mascots and and his fellow runners let him go into boxing.
Maybe he’s got mascotophobia?
I really doubt it, but it’s possible.
Or maybe he was just really disappoint she was “Appy” instead of a box of Gauloises.
AY has it right. This guy is just a pampered athlete who needs to feel it in his pocketbook in order to be “contrite” in a West Virginia kind of way!
CREEP….
I thought all were gathered around the barbecue today. So wrote a little greeting to you all.

How quiet it is. No new blawgs. No comments. Weird.
Don’t tell’em man, that dood had forgot this is the Cinderella hour. The USA Independence Day.
When blawging is forbidden, commenting is forbidden, and only a limited number of activities in thís universal expressioon of patriotism.
I was thinking of making a scurrilous list of such activities: example—making up spontaneous gangs to attack McD to place orders for 5000 Big Mac’s (the fire department will respond to that emergency—–since the police is dealing with the girl scout gangs doing the same at Burger King’s.)
So to the others I say, keep manning your barbecues, don’t let the small ones drink “lighter” fluid, especially if they want to spit it on the fire.
And keep’em loaded. You never know when a terrorist, or some “crimnul” might attack your csstle.
I’m trying to rmemember something appropriate to end with a real tribute—but the image of George saying “Mission accomplished” on the carrier deck keeps interfering.
Some epiphanic moment to reflect on in thanksgiving?
Not a one. Guess my birth will have to do, but that’s kinda hazy now.
So anyway, Happy Fourth! That’s bigger than a fifth!
