Couple Stoned To Death In Mali Under Sharia Law

We have another fresh outrage from a Sharia verdict: a couple in Mali was stoned to death by extreme Islamic activists in Northern Mali.

They were executed in the town of Aguelhok by being buried up to their necks and pelted with stones until they died. Al-Qaida-linked Islamists are seeking to impose sharia law in the north with an ongoing rebellion. We recently discussed the destruction of Islamic shrines in Timbuktu.

  1. nick, I’ve read that the Tuareg migrate throughout 2 or 3 different countries and that many of them are turning- or trying to turn- to agriculture and a more settled way of life but I don’t know if it’s because the actual landscape or the political landscape is changing. I can see that governments might not want large numbers of people moving into and out of their country regulary and also that being self-identified as ‘stateless’ would put those people at a serious political disadvantage.

Your recollection points to a situation that indicates various political interests wanted them ‘domesticated’. This turn of events in Mali is sad on a number of fronts. Thanks for the historical info.
