Tony L. Putman, 18, may be unparalleled in his cruelty if the account by police is accurate. Kansas City police say that Putman confessed in the beating of a 93-year-old man and the rape of his 84-year-old wife.
The husband came home to discover Putman allegedly ransacking the house. Police say Putman savagely beat the 93-year-old and then bound him by with belts. The wife then came home from the bank and went upstairs after hearing her husband’s moaning. Putman then allegedly stole $400 that she got from the bank and proceeded to rape the 84-year-old woman.
Police received a description of the vehicle and later pulled over at least three other people with Putman. They say that Putman immediately confessed that he was the only one responsible for the crimes.
That does not leave much for defense counsel after Putman was given Miranda before his statement. Even without that statement, police say that Putnam cut his hand at the scene and that they have DNA evidence.

Idealist,is a moron & a heartless one at that. His long winded defense of this human piece of garbage was made worse by his lack of compassion for the innocent victims of this horrific attack! Can one imagine for one second, that this self-righteous. Puke would dare spout this lame defense of the indefensible to the children of these poor senior citizens? You know that he would not dare. “What if the older fella had a gun” he writes, “that he was attempting to use.” What if he did have a gun, the sick rapists would be dead, that would have made this a story with a happy ending! Idealist would have you think that defending your home and life with a gun, means having you’re 84 year old grandmother raped by some animal is justified if the animal was poor. I think idealist and Mr. Soon to be living the rest of his short ass life in agonizing pain rapist Putnam, should share a cell for a decade or three, made he/she could explain to Mr.Putnam the root causality, which has made him a sick animal rapist & thief? I say, to hell with both of them.
Darren,
Neither would I Darren. I would even push the switch, gladly.
I did not, I believe, touch on guilt or sentencing. Did I?If not why do you discuss it in an adversarial tone of voice?
To my knowledge I recall mentioning only causations and ultimeate cures of societal ills.
And your emotions, which some mey disapprove of, are OK in my version of the blog. I only suggested that we examine what lies behind each of us expressing our own ones.
But please don’t use me as a substitute target for him.
Widening the discussion does not imply that the system should be changed, nor that this person deserves special consideration. I just feel that kneejerk reactions suit poorly this exalted platform.
Idealist:
While I understand what you are saying about this man there are still lines that once crossed there can be no redemption. When a person becomes as depraved as this guy is alleged and has confessed to being, the public deserves he be permamently removed from society for its own good.
I know the Supreme Court struck down death penalties for rape offenses but if that was somehow reversed and this guy received the gallows, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.
Here we are friends doing what GeneH and Nick Spinelli are “discussing” on the other FLA police thread.
Do you see that as I do, I think?
We prejudge before all the evidence is in. Of course I now realize that mitigating circumstances an d social investigations are presented after guilt is established, some little have I learned. But the simple open and confessed facts of the deed allows us to condmmn him, and expend all teh gall and other forms of damnation on him.
What if in fact he is protecting his brother who was with him, but has kids to make ends meet? What if the police iare hiding the fact that the older man had a gun which he had attempted to use? All specualtion. Am I sympatheizing with the alleged criminal? Yes, unequivocally.
What would we feel if the mug shot had resembled the one of TM at age 16 which is the first one the press “choze”, or did they?
Our part in producing his upbringing, his future NON-hopes, his resentment, reinforce all his years.
When does trauma effect the personality.
Once, or perhaps several times, the claim has been made that sick societies produce sick persons, even mentally or personality disorders.
Let us take the case of the jews, worldwide, who directly or indirectly have expperienced th Shoma. What does that trauma do, for decades? Will those long term traumas ever be de-potentiated?
The same for the ghetto person of today, growing up as a small child in the trauma-inflicting environment.
Constant infliction of the same or similar pain from the same negative stimulus will establish the conditions which can be expressed in a variety of sick ways: phobias, PTSD, anti-social behaviour, etc.
Reflect, that is all I suggest. Don’t grip after the cathartic button so easily to rinse your disgust from the inhumaity demonstrated here.
Defending? That is the attorney’s job. I observe and analyze.
A man can only achieve so much, but there is no limit to how low he can sink.
This guy has no redeaming qualities about him. I know nothing of him but certain I am in this view.
Does anyone know how the elderly couple is doing?
What Raff said. Not another day of freedom.
An interesting study would be to check the testerone levels of this group against a comparable control group in degree of criminality or type of felony, etc.
ElsieDL,
Right.
And my view is that men essentially are anti-scocial by the requirements nature made on them to survive and reproduce. Woman are conserving, but what is more are not forced to at the first hand defend, and to attack to get food. They gather and do not kill except in defense.
blech
Dredd, I know better than most about the horrible crimes such as this. When I was a jr. in college I was interviewed by the local paper in a “man in the street” piece. The topic was the death penalty. I was opposed then [1973] and now.
This will be used as an example by the death penalty advocates.
ElsieDL, Your laments are heard by me. The sad truth is, over the milleniums, crimes are overwhelmingly committed by men. Men are capable of unspeakable horror and incredible honor. It was men who perpetrated the horrors of the Holocaust and it was men who stormed the beaches of Normandy, knowing they would probably die, to end the Nazi terror. Men are the ying and yang. Women are the rocks of of all cultures.
The more I read about the depravity of the human mind and soul, the more I love that street dog of mine. He wouldn’t hurt a fly, is loyal, well-behaved and social. I can however never cease to wonder ‘who’ this perpetrator is; what was he like as a child; how was he in school; were there signs?
As a veteran teacher I have had a few children about whom I sent strong warnings as potential psychopaths and was proven right. The problem is that the school administrator, the parents and even the psychologist didn’t want to ‘label’ them. One of the two I worried about the most ended up bringing an ax to middle school and was barely stopped before he tried to cut off a girl’s head. I am however fully aware that a man like the Sikh Temple shooter was perceived as nice and friendly. Yet, there are signals in his life all along as well but nobody put them together. Lastly, why are so many of these crimes at the hands of young MEN? It’s very disheartening. I hope this young man is locked up for a very long time.
rafflaw much closer in his analysis than Anonymously. This guy passed “creep” awhile ago.
This guy, if convicted, should never see another day of freedom. What a supreme piece of filth.
Damnaged child. God loves sínners said Jesus. Why don’t we? He would have been sent wandering alone in the desert in days of yore.
Now we spend some thousands to send him to a post grad course in crime with board and room for some years. ????
Creep…..
Kansas City is a great city but like all big cities, overwhelmed by crime in poor neighborhoods. I worked cases in the neighborhood where this occurred back in the 70’s. It was dangerous then but obviously gotten much worse. When people consider burglary exclusively a crime against property, they need to think of this case and the many like it.
The world never ceases to appall and disappoint me…
