Shielding The Crown Jewels: British Royal Family Blocks Publication of Randy Harry Photos in England While Hundreds of Millions See Them On The Internet

Prince Harry’s latest drunken escapade is now laid out for hundreds of millions to see in all of his naked glory . . . except for people in England. The Royal family moved quickly to effectively bar British newspapers from publishing the photos under the English libel laws, which I have criticized in the past as both draconian and restrictive of free speech. Now the Sun is bucking the effective order from the palace and now running the photos. In the meantime, millions of Brits were able to see the photos barred in newspapers but simply turning on their computers.

‘Prince Harry Naked’ has been googled over 70 million times – pictures showing the prince holding the royal jewels and cavorting with an equally naked woman in a game of strip pool.

The naughty moments of royals hold little fascination with me — even less than do royals generally. However, the English continue to impose highly restrictive rules on the media. First there is the Official Secrets law that is absurdly broad and effectively makes journalist freedoms discretionary in areas touching on the governmental interests. Then there is a host of laws allowing exceptionally broad prior restraint rules and blasphemy and hate crime prosecutions. However, it is the libel law that probably has the greatest chilling effect — extremely pro-plaintiff rules that threaten to ruin both individuals and media outlets with both damages and the English rule compelling the payment of the opposing party’s legal fees and costs.

The pictures from Harry’s wild ride in Las Vegas are the latest example of how the libel laws are used by the wealthy to limit the press and bar information to the public. Here you have a randy, juvenile prince infamous for public acts of embarrassing debauchery. Yet, the palace insists that disclosure of photos taken at a large party are private matters for the prince.

Once again, the Internet shows how government limitations can be circumvented by the Internet — an ironic timing since the government is still surrounding the embassy with Julian Assange inside to arrest him and extradite him in a case that is widely viewed as retaliation for his disclosing claimed classified information.

England is now ground zero for the threat to free speech in the West from ever-widening blasphemy prosecutions to hate speech laws to libel actions. Perhaps the absurdities of the most recent limitations will trigger a reexamination of these law by our English cousins.

  1. harry fairy bo barry, banna nanna fo fairy. Harry. If the first two letters are ever the same, ya drop them both and say the name, like Rob , Fob as in f or bob or Mary, Mary , is contrary. etc Name game.
It is a lillypuddlian country where they maintain the notion of Lord and Ladies, Lass and Lassies. They missed out on the French Revolution that went across Europe countries and they missed out on a lot of things. But they have their Kraut Kingship with the present Royal Family. Praise the Lard on Sunday and cook with Crisco on Monday.

  2. Let the Royals come after them. Hold a trial that makes a showcase of all the embarassing escapades of the royals going back to the Plantagenet Times. ~Darren

really? seems like all that is already out there….so privacy is a dirty word these days ….would that be for everyone or just those who you judge as having too much fun?

  3. justa, How can you say you’re “not conservative” and then say you’re “old fashioned.” I’ve been lectured here by several folks pontificating that is incongruous.

And, w/ the brit rags, this is their schtick whether one likes it or not. If nude photos of Winston Churchill were available in 40’s they would have been front page. Now..get that mental image out of your head.

  4. “The Royal Penis is clean Your Highness”

Royalty and debauchery, salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly. The tradition lives on.

Oh, the topic at hand. Sorry. I would give credit to any Brit newspaper who has the courage to challenge the law by printing these photos. Let the Royals come after them. Hold a trial that makes a showcase of all the embarassing escapades of the royals going back to the Plantagenet Times. And take it before the Eurpiean Human Rights courts. I would bet the Royal Family will not have the nerve to continue and it will set the precident that others will simply ignore the law. Just a thought.

I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to exist with the whole world up your butt 24/7.

    EXACTLY!!!!

I know I would not have done well…. BUT, then again.. I’ve always been a bit wild and spontaneous….. 🙂

  6. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to exist with the whole world up your butt 24/7.

  7. feemeister, how could one forget Harry dressed up as a Nazi? oh, apologies all around for that party fox paw….

  8. “But is it necessary to say things like that about Harry if he is known for the other things justa was mentioning? ”

    There is a saying:
“You are only as good as the last thing you did.”

  9. justagurlinseattle & Malisha , if you drive the SW around the Colorado River, you will see ruins of secluded resorts where Hollywood & friends used to go to cavort out of the public eye………..

There was a mystery about people back then…

      It was nice…

I grew up on the 60’s and 70’s…. Things were just different back then….

and NOBODY would have even THOUGHT posting these photos would be considered a good idea….
It would have been kept a private matter…

  10. Maybe I am a bit old fashioned….

I miss the days of old… when an actor could go and womanize and not be Tabloid fodder…. when the President of the United States could have an affair, and it did not cause impeachment…. but, rather it was almost expected of him….. when a Royal was expected to be a bit of a playboy…. and rumours were told…. BUT, nobody needed photos…

    But, then again… I miss 3 Martini Lunches…. 😀

  11. I would be interested in knowing whether the quote ”Here you have a randy, juvenile prince infamous for public acts of embarrassing debauchery,” is outweighed by the things justa is talking about.

I understand the idea of what is being said on the other points. But is it necessary to say things like that about Harry if he is known for the other things justa was mentioning?

When I first saw the pictures, I thought he was cavorting in a casino. But when I went on, I saw it was a private party in a suite. I tend to agree it was a crappy thing for someone to do to him.

What are the other acts of public debauchery anyway?

  12. Nick..

    NO… I’ve NEVER been a conservative….

I just think that when a person has GONE ABOVE what they needed to, and has gone and fought for their country, they should be allowed a BIT of privacy…. he has earned it….

he was born into being a Royal…. this was NOT a choice…. however, going and serving in active combat was a choice…. so people calling him embarrassing really is uncalled for….

If this was my daughter, and she was in Vegas having fun… I would be pissed if somebody sold photos of her…

Fact is… he is being a kid in Vegas….

I’ve been to Vegas…. and well… getting naked while partying….. is just part of what we call…. a GOOD Vegas Story….

I don’t know about you… BUT, I have gone skinny dipping… and I have played Strip Poker…. and in NO way would I EVER find my behavior embarrassing…. I call it NORMAL….. and yet, NOT NEWS worthy….

they ONLY want to print the photos to embarrass him…. they are of NO informative value, other than the size of his hoo hah….

  13. The problem for Harry is that there is a sort of bargain.

He is supported by the country.
In turn he is meant to at least keep up appearances. It’s an important part of the job.
Inviting a bunch of strangers into a hotel suite and getting naked lets the side down.

If something is amongst people who can be trusted to be discreet, it’s private.
Inviting ‘whoever’ amounts to inviting in the public in this age of smartphones and instant uploads.

  14. justa, You’re waxing of the world before ubiquitous camera phones and the internet. In a small way I agree w/ you, but your world vanished about 10-15 years ago. I didn’t think you were a conservative..looking backward.

  15. I imagine that “The King’s got no clothes on” has been done to death by now.
    It’s an appropriate story though.

    The Royal We-We

    I could go on, but I won’t.

  16. he was having a PRIVATE Holiday….

these photos being printed… do nothing of real value….

    they are a private matter…

WHAT GOOD do these photos bring to the public????

    Do they inform the public???

    NO… not really….

Personally I think whoever took these photos and sold them is absolute scum…..

what else he is famous for….

SERVING IN AFGHANISTAN in Active Combat……

Prince Harry is currently training to become a pilot with the Army Air Corps.

He received his provisional wings from his father The Prince of Wales, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps (AAC) on 7th May 2010.

On the same day it was announced that Prince Harry would continue his training on Apache aircraft at Middle Wallop.

Until The Prince has completed his training, he formally remains a Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals) on attachment to the Army Air Corps.

    Training

In September 2004 Prince Harry passed his Regular Commissions Board (RCB), the qualification necessary to train at Sandhurst.

After completing a period of work experience, Prince Harry entered The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in May 2005 to begin his training as an Officer Cadet. During the 44-week training course in Camberley, Surrey, Prince Harry was known as Officer Cadet Wales.

On 25 January 2006, Clarence House announced that Prince Harry was to join the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals).

Following the successful completion of the course, Prince Harry was commissioned as an Army officer on 12 April 2006. His grandparents, The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, took the salute at the Sovereign’s Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall also attended the Parade to see Prince Harry’s Passing Out, as the commissioning is known, and Prince William was present as an officer cadet.

Prince Harry joined his regiment on 8 May 2006, before reporting to the Armour Centre at Bovington in Dorset to begin the Troop Leaders’ Course, his training to become an armoured reconnaissance troop leader.

On 28 February 2008 The Ministry of Defence confirmed, after reports appeared on a US website, that Prince Harry had been serving with the British Army in Afghanistan for more than two months.

Clarence House issued the following statement: “Prince Harry is very proud to serve his country on operations alongside his fellow soldiers and to do the job he has been trained for.”
