  1. Who took that video? The child’s mother? One has to wonder why such a young child is so upset about the presidential campaign.

  2. It would be nice if election cycles didn’t make kids cry:

Noam Chomsky: One of the most important comments on deceit, I think, was made by Adam Smith. He pointed out that a major goal of business is to deceive and oppress the public.

And one of the striking features of the modern period is the institutionalization of that process, so that we now have huge industries deceiving the public — and they’re very conscious about it, the public relations industry. Interestingly, this developed in the freest countries — in Britain and the US — roughly around time of WWI, when it was recognized that enough freedom had been won that people could no longer be controlled by force. So modes of deception and manipulation had to be developed in order to keep them under control.

And by now these are huge industries. They not only dominate marketing of commodities, but they also control the political system. As anyone who watches a US election knows, it’s marketing. It’s the same techniques that are used to market toothpaste.

And, of course, there are power systems in place to facilitate this. Throughout history it’s been mostly the property holders or the educated classes who’ve tended to support power systems. And that’s a large part of what I think education is — it’s a form of indoctrination. You have to reconstruct a picture of the world in order to be conducive to the interests and concerns of the educated classes, and this involves a lot of self-deceit.

    (Chomsky, emphasis added).

  3. Swarthmore mom,

I live in Massachusetts. Everyone knows that our former governor doesn’t have a chance of winning here. Fortunately, we aren’t bombarded with presidential campaign videos. The big contest in the Commonwealth is the one between Scott “Senator McDreamy” Brown and Elizabeth Warren. We’ve already received several anti-Warren robocalls from Karl Rove’s group Crossroads GPS.

  4. What Mike S. said. This girl is cute, but I think it is an overplayed and overblown moment just like the overplayed and overspent commercials and ads that she is “complaining” about.

  5. I’m tired of this little girl and the pretense that she speaks for the nation. It is no doubt true that there are many who are tired (bored?) by this election and the excesses that have caused more than $2 billion to be spent by both Presidential candidates. It certainly is a lousy way to run such an important election to our nation’s highest office. Yet currently this is the system in our corporate dominated country. It would be nice to be really informed about each candidates positions and beliefs, but our media covering primarily the “horse race” aspect does little to inform and as I’ve iterated and reiterated over and again here this is purposeful. This little girl represents the game of “Ain’t it Awful” as played by many of our citizenry about the electoral process, which is really a form of denial of interest. These are undoubtedly people who are far more interested in Kim Kardashian’s latest escapade, or the new Fall Fashion Line, or what are they going to buy for Christmas. This little girl represents a meme fostered by the media whose aim is to trivialize the process. As with many four year old’s, my guess is that within 30 seconds of this video she was happily smiling about some new source of amusement shown to her, to quell her tears. Unfortunately, in their campaign of “dumbing down” America for the past forty-four years the Right Wing Cabal has admirably succeeded in their purpose. Many citizens
encompassing self interest has intersected with their narrowed attention spans to provide them with the immaturity and magical thinking of that child.

  6. Doesn’t France or some country have limits on the time you can campaign? Our system is out of wack, and I think at least some of the hyper-partisanship can be 24-7 media coverage of non-stop elections.. as the mid-term coverage will begin as soon as this election is over. There is nothing you can’t do in 3 months that you did in two years… except maybe focus on the job you were elected to do instead of perpetually campaigning.

  7. Now what are the doomsters saying, just for balancing the euphoria gang?

And are there state oriented polls which should be taken into account?
I am concerned about Florida and NC. Where does Blow place them.

Nate Silver says, “Obama now at 85.7% and Romney 14.3%. ” I assume that is percentage of likeliness of winning. Not?

New chant: Romney is worse than Sandy.

  8. If that video were shown to CPS, the kid would be taken from her parents with charges of child endangerment.

  9. Good post Nal! I saw this earlier this week and was hoping someone would put it up here. Living in a swing state I “feel her pain.” One perk is we have The Boss coming to town on Monday. However, he came here for Kerry in 2004 and we all know how that worked out.

Did you read that Mr. Turley’s boyhood friend, John Cusack, is going to play Rush Limbaugh in a flick directed by Betty Thomas.

  10. SwM, yeah I saw that. And trying to skew Intrade by buying up massive shares of Romney. That ain’t working out so well for them either. One of the academics on Daily Kos, ‘teacherken,’ says this morning he can see no path to 270 votes for Romney. Not even if there are recounts. The lawyers for both sides are already gearing up for recounts in any state where it is not an absolute blowout.

Ken cites Charles M. Blow’s column in the NYT. It is brutal.

  11. I don’t live in a swing state either, but we get ads aimed at Virginians who are in the coverage area of TV stations on the border.

But speaking of Nate Silver, his latest “now-cast” from shortly before 1:00 AM EST last night indicates momentum trending blue. Obama now at 85.7% and Romney 14.3%. The electoral vote is now-cast at 306.3 for Obama and 231.7 for Romney.

  12. Since I don’t live in a swing state, I don’t see all the ads or get the calls. My district is so RED that I don’t even get local campaign calls. This little girl is from Colorado, and they are constantly barraged. Hope Nate Silver is right.
