Deep Sixed: Worker Quits After Receiving W-2 Form Bearing The Number 666

We have periodically discussed cases involving employees who have objected on religious grounds to documents, badges, or other material showing the number “666” — considered by some to be the sign of the beast. We can now add the case of Walter Slonopas, a Tennessee maintenance worker, says he quit his job because his W-2 tax form was stamped with the number 666.

There are a couple of problems with the claim. First, I have already identified the Beast in a prior column as Michael Eisner, former CEO at Disney. Second, many scholars believe the actual number is 616, not 666. It turns out that 666 may be the ancient equivalent to a typo. Papyrus 115 is a fragmented piece of papyrus that dates back to the 3rd century and was not translated until the 20th century. Researchers were surprised to see that the papyrus included “616” as the sign of the Beast. If true, the Beast was the worker who received his or her W-2 50 workers before Hyatt was likely already wearing the number and lost his soul 50 days before Slonopas (It is just like the Beast to finger another worker while he or she laughs her way to the mailbox to send in a tax check).

Here are the more often read passages:

Revelation 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Revelation 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. (666)

This passage has previously led to problems when 666 appears on papers or in conversation for some Christians.

In the case of Walter Slonopas, he insists that receiving the 666th W-2 form would have condemned his soul to hell. That is a pretty petty God if receiving a standardized form is enough to toss away a life of clean living.

Contech Casting LLC insists that it is not marking employees for the Beast and simply had over 666 forms to hand out and he was the 666th. Of course, the Beast’s minions would have to say that. This is not the first time that Slonopas, 52, faced Beast branding. Earlier in his employment, he was supposed to be No. 668 to use when he clocked in, but was given 666. He objected and was given a new number.

The company offered to rehire Slonopas and give him a new W-2 form (presumably he had to simply come to the Benefits Office in Room 666). However, Slonopas has refused insisting “God is worth more than money.” . . . or rational thought, it appears.

  1. Personally, I believe 666 is a reference to the Romans.

    Interestingly, 6 x 6 x 6 = 216. 216 degrees is the measure of the outside angle of the points of a pentagram, which is associated with the devil.

    On a personal note, there was a Sergeant with the State Patrol where I worked who was, in my view unjustly, demoted to trooper. When this happened he was then required to change his badge number to one > 300 that was available. He chose 666.

    That’s the spirit.

  4. I had the same problem 20 years ago when my boss handed me my W-2 numbered #666. I simply learned to walk on my hands and my W-2 miraculously became #999. I haven’t had a problem since, except when it rains and the water gets in my nose. And trying to find Reeboks that fit my hands, so I can continue to run marathons.

  6. That number is not a literal number. That is thinking externally. If we say we have no sin the truth is not in us. The beast is us fallen in sin. That is why our body does to life what it does to life. The visualization of the beast of all beasts is Satan looking like God not being God. He is the abomination of desolation who will stand in the holy of hollies where he ought not to stand.

  7. My credit card bill this month was $666.84 … do you think I could get away with not paying it by telling the card company I refuse to make a payment containing the number of the beast??

  9. Well, this is reason 666 why I am a humanist and not a religious fundamentalist. Free from religious superstition and dogma.

  13. There have been instances of the 666 being on license plates and as telephone prefixes. Don’t you hate when that happens. I think it was in southwest Virginia where the county had to destroy thousands of license plates when the computer machine selected the prefixes. I also think it was in Virginia the phone company used 666 as a prefix. That lasted about one day.

  15. Revelations is the most pernicious chapter in the Christian Bible. Many scholars believe it shouldn’t have been included in the Canon in the first place.
    It gives license to all manner of bloodthirsty craziness that does not serve Christianity well. In this case it doesn’t serve this man well, unless of course I’m wrong and Revelations reveals eternal truths. If that is the case, then clearly Satan is trying to claim this man’s soul by numbering him at Contech, which is a front company for evil. By the way JT is wrong about Eisner in my circles he is known as the man from ZOG.

  16. We have become a country of insane people. The fact that the company offered to rehire him is really ridiculous. These must be a lot more to this story.

  17. Twenty years ago a friend registered his car and received a license plate with 3 numbers and 3 letters. Yep, the 3 numbers were 666. He was asked at the counter if he objected. ‘Nope’ he said, and (I’m sure) he had a big smile on his face as he walked out with the plates.
    It was a great conversation piece and amused us for years.
    People are different. ……. I run on, with a memory….
    Soon after he got it on the road, 5 of us attended a funeral. He drove a station wagon (he had bought a used car) We all piled in and drove in the procession to the cemetery. :o) Ya had to be there I guess.
    There are not many 13th floors around.

I believe the phrase “number of his name” and “Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast” are references to numerology and the semi-secret knowledge of its meaning in prophecy. Numerology was already a magic practice of the time, in which the letters of a name (in the original language) were added up recursively to produce a number for each name a man had (first, middle, last).

    So (using the positions of letters in our alphabet) “Julius” has the positions 10,21,12,9,21,19, adds to 92, then the 9+2 add to 11, and 1+1 add to 2.

    “Jesus Christ” would be 10,5,19,21,19 3,8,18,9,19,20= 2 5 = 25.

    Then they assign “good” and “bad” meaning to the numbers. 7 good, 6 bad, 9 stable (never changes the number), etc. It is kind of a silly fourth grade game we used to play.
